2절, 그가 또 가인의 아우 아벨을 낳았는데 아벨은 양 치는 자였고 가인은 농사하는 자였더라 And she added to bear his brother Abel; and Abel was a shepherd of the flock, and Cain was a tiller of the ground.

‘양 치는 자’가 체어리티라는 선을 행하는 자라는 것은 누가 보아도 명백한 사실인데요, 이것은 신구약 말씀에 나오는 하나의 익숙한 그림이기 때문입니다. 인도하고 가르치는 자를 ‘목자’라 하고, 인도를 받고 가르침을 받는 사람들을 ‘양떼’라 합니다. 체어리티의 선으로 인도하지 않으며, 그것을 가르치지 않는 자는 참 목자가 아니며, 선으로 인도함을 받지 않고, 또 선이 무엇인지 배우지 않는 자는 양 떼에 속한 게 아닙니다. 굳이 말씀에서 많은 구절 인용하면서까지 ‘목자’와 ‘양떼’가 상징하는 걸 컨펌하려고 애쓸 필요는 거의 없지 싶고 대신 다음 몇 구절 정도면 될 것 같습니다. 이사야에서 That a “shepherd of the flock” is one who exercises the good of charity, must be obvious to everyone, for this is a familiar figure in the Word of both Old and New Testaments. He who leads and teaches is called a “shepherd,” and those who are led and taught are called the “flock.” He who does not lead to the good of charity and teach it, is not a true shepherd; and he who is not led to good, and does not learn what is good, is not of the flock. It is scarcely necessary to confirm this signification of “shepherd” and “flock” by quotations from the Word; but the following passages may be cited. In Isaiah:

 

네가 땅에 뿌린 종자에 주께서 비를 주사 땅이 먹을 것을 내며 곡식이 풍성하고 기름지게 하실 것이며 그날에 네 가축이 광활한 목장에서 먹을 것이요 (사30:23) The Lord shall give the rain of thy seed, wherewith thou sowest the ground, and bread of the increase of the ground; in that day shall he feed thy cattle in a broad meadow, (Isa. 30:23)

 

여기 ‘땅이 먹을 것을 내며 곡식이 풍성하고 기름지게 하실 것’, 이게 바로 체어리티입니다. where “bread of the increase of the ground,” denotes charity.

 

계속해서 Again:

 

그는 목자같이 양 떼를 먹이시며 어린 양을 그 팔로 모아 품에 안으시며 젖먹이는 암컷들을 온순히 인도하시리로다 (사40:11) The Lord Jehovih shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs into his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. (Isa. 40:11)

 

시편에서 In David:

 

요셉을 양 떼 같이 인도하시는 이스라엘의 목자여 귀를 기울이소서 그룹 사이에 좌정하신 이여 빛을 비추소서 (시80:1) Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that sittest on the cherubim, shine forth. (Ps. 80:1)

 

예레미야에서 In Jeremiah:

 

2아름답고 우아한 시온의 딸을 내가 멸절하리니 3목자들이 그 양 떼를 몰고 와서 주위에 자기 장막을 치고 각기 그 처소에서 먹이리로다 (렘6:2, 3) I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman; the shepherds and their flocks shall come unto her, they shall pitch tents near her round about, they shall feed everyone his own space.(Jer. 6:2, 3)

 

에스겔에서 In Ezekiel:

 

37주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 그래도 이스라엘 족속이 이같이 자기들에게 이루어 주기를 내게 구하여야 할지라 내가 그들의 수효를 양 떼 같이 많아지게 하되 38제사 드릴 양 떼 곧 예루살렘이 정한 절기의 양 무리 같이 황폐한 성읍을 사람의 떼로 채우리라 그리한즉 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 하셨느니라 (겔36:37–38) Thus saith the Lord Jehovih, I will multiply them as a flock of man, as a hallowed flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her appointed times; so shall the waste cities be filled with the flock of man. (Ezek. 36:37–38)

 

이사야에서 In Isaiah:

 

게달의 양 무리는 다 네게로 모일 것이요 느바욧의 숫양은 네게 공급되고 내 제단에 올라 기꺼이 받음이 되리니 내가 내 영광의 집을 영화롭게 하리라 (사60:7) All the flocks of Arabia shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee. (Isa. 60:7)

 

양 떼를 체어리티의 선으로 인도하는 자들은 ‘양 떼를 모으는’ 자들인 반면, 양 떼를 체어리티의 선으로 인도하지 않는 자들은 ‘양 떼를 흩는’ 자들입니다. 모두를 모아 하나 되게 하는 것은 체어리티의 일이지만, 모두를 흩어 하나 되지 못 하게 하는 것은 체어리티의 핍절이기 때문입니다. They who lead the flock to the good of charity are they who “gather the flock”; but they who do not lead them to the good of charity “scatter the flock”; for all gathering together and union are of charity, and all dispersion and disunion are from want of charity.
