8절, 그들이 그날 바람이 불 때 동산에 거니시는 여호와 하나님의 소리를 듣고 아담과 그의 아내가 여호와 하나님의 낯을 피하여 동산 나무 사이에 숨은지라 And they heard the voice of Jehovah God going to itself in the garden in the air of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the face of Jehovah God in the midst of the tree of the garden.

‘여호와의 낯을 피하여 숨은지라’(to hide themselves from the face of Jehovah)가 악을 의식하는 사람들이 흔히 그러듯 내적 딕테이트를 두려워함이라는 것은 그들의 대답인 10절 말씀, ‘이르되 내가 동산에서 하나님의 소리를 듣고 내가 벗었으므로 두려워하여 숨었나이다’(I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked)를 보면 분명합니다. ‘여호와의 낯’(The face of Jehovah), 즉 주님의 얼굴은 자비, 평강 및 모든 선이라는 것이 다음 축복의 말씀들을 보면 더욱 분명한 것처럼 말입니다. That to “hide themselves from the face of Jehovah,” means to be afraid of the dictate, as is wont to be the case with those who are conscious of evil, is evident from their reply (verse 10): “I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked.” The “face of Jehovah,” or of the Lord, is mercy, peace, and every good, as is clearly evident from the benediction:

 

25여호와는 그의 얼굴을 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며 26여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 드사 평강 주시기를 원하노라 할지니라 하라 (민6:25-26) Jehovah make his faces to shine upon thee, and be merciful unto thee; Jehovah lift up his faces upon thee, and give thee peace. (Num. 6:25–26)

 

시편에서는 And in David:

 

하나님은 우리에게 은혜를 베푸사 복을 주시고 그의 얼굴빛을 우리에게 비추사 (시67:1) God be merciful unto us, and bless us, and cause his faces to shine upon us. (Ps. 67:1)

 

여러 사람의 말이 우리에게 선을 보일 자 누구뇨 하오니 여호와여 주의 얼굴을 들어 우리에게 비추소서 (시4:6) There be many that say, Who will show us any good? Jehovah, lift thou up the light of thy faces upon us. (Ps. 4:6)

 

그래서 이사야에서는 주님의 자비를 ‘자기 앞의 사자’(the angel of faces)라 하고 있습니다. The mercy of the Lord is therefore called the “angel of faces,” in Isaiah:

 

7내가 여호와께서 우리에게 베푸신 모든 자비와 그의 찬송을 말하며 그의 사랑을 따라, 그의 많은 자비를 따라 이스라엘 집에 베푸신 큰 은총을 말하리라 8그가 말씀하시되 그들은 실로 나의 백성이요 거짓을 행하지 아니하는 자녀라 하시고 그들의 구원자가 되사 9그들의 모든 환난에 동참하사 자기 앞의 사자로 하여금 그들을 구원하시며 그의 사랑과 그의 자비로 그들을 구원하시고 옛적 모든 날에 그들을 드시며 안으셨으나 (사63:7-9) I will make mention of the mercies of Jehovah; he hath requited them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his mercies; and he became their savior. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his faces saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them. (Isa. 63:7–9)
