‘가인’이라 하는 신앙의 교리를 여기서 설명하고 있는데요, 사랑에서 신앙을 분리하면 그 결과, 체어리티에서도 분리됩니다. 체어리티는 사랑의 자녀이기 때문입니다. 어디든지 교회가 있는 곳이면 이단들이 일어납니다. 사람들은 신앙의 어떤 특별한 신조에 과도한 관심을 기울이다가 그만 그걸 메인으로 만들어 버리기 때문입니다. 그런 게 바로 인간 사고의 본성, 즉 사람은 어떤 것 하나에 과도한 관심을 보이다가 그걸 다른 모든 것보다 우선하는 경향이 있기 때문이며, 이런 경향은 특히 그가 오버한 나머지 그걸 자신의 고유한 발견이라고 주장할 때라든지, 그가 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑으로 부풀어 올랐을 때 그렇습니다. 그렇게 되면 그때부터는 모든 것이 다 그것에 들어맞는 것 같고, 그것을 컨펌하는 것 같아서 그는 결국 그것이 맞다 맹세까지 하게 됩니다. 심지어 그것이 거짓이더라도 말이지요. 바로 이런 식으로 ‘가인’이라 하는 사람들은 신앙을 사랑보다도 더 본질적인 걸로 만들었습니다. 그리고 그들은 결과적으로 사랑 없는 삶을 살았기 때문에, 그런 삶에서 비롯된 자아와 환상 둘 다에 대한 사랑으로 그들은 어이없게도 그런 컨펌 가운데 있게 된 것입니다. The doctrine of faith called “Cain” is here described, which in consequence of separating faith from love, separated it also from charity, the offspring of love. Wherever there is any church, there arise heresies, because while men are intent on some particular article of faith they make that the main thing; for such is the nature of man’s thought that while intent on some one thing he sets it before any other, especially when his imagination claims it as a discovery of his own, and when the love of self and of the world puff him up. Everything then seems to agree with and confirm it, until at last he will swear that it is so, even if it is false. Just in this way those called “Cain” made faith more essential than love, and as they consequently lived without love, both the love of self and the fantasy thence derived conspired to confirm them in it.
