19절, 라멕이 두 아내를 맞이하였으니 하나의 이름은 아다요 하나의 이름은 씰라였더라 And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

보통 한 교회의 상태는 그래서 상황에 따라 달라집니다. 시간이 흐름에 따라 교회는 참 신앙으로부터 멀어지다가 결국 신앙이라는 것이 완전히 사라지는 지경까지 이르게 되는데, ‘황폐해졌다’(vastated) 하는 것은 바로 그 지경, 그런 상태를 말합니다. 이런 일이 태고교회의 경우는 가인파(가인派, Cainites)라 하는 사람들 사이에서, 또 홍수 후 고대교회의 경우 및 유대 교회의 경우에서도 있었습니다. 주의 강림(降臨, the Lord’s advent)의 때 종말의 상태가 바로 이런 황폐한 상태였는데요, 그들은 자기들을 구원하러 오시기로 예정되어 있던 주님에 관하여 아무것도 몰랐으며, 그분을 향한 신앙에 대해서도 아는 게 거의 없었습니다. 초대 기독교회, 곧 주님 강림 직후 있었던 교회 역시 그랬으며, 오늘날(※ 1750년대 즈음 유럽) 교회의 경우도 그 안에 아무런 신앙이 남아 있지 않을 정도로 그렇게 철저하게 황폐해졌습니다. 그러나 교회의 얼마간 핵들은 늘 남아 있는데, 이것은 신앙에 관해 황폐해진 사람들은 인식하지 못하는 것입니다. 태고교회의 경우가 그랬는데, 태고교회의 남은 자들은 홍수 때까지 있었고, 홍수 후에도 계속 있었습니다. 태고교회 내 이들 남은 자들을 ‘노아’라 하는 것입니다. The state of a church in general is thus circumstanced. In process of time it departs from the true faith until at last it comes to be entirely destitute of faith, when it is said to be “vastated.” This was the case with the most ancient church among those who were called Cainites, and also with the ancient church after the flood, as well as with the Jewish church. At the time of the Lord’s advent this last was in such a state of vastation that they knew nothing about the Lord, that he was to come into the world for their salvation, and they knew still less about faith in him. Such was also the case with the primitive Christian church, or that which existed after the Lord’s advent, and which at this day is so completely vastated that there is no faith remaining in it. Yet there always remains some nucleus of a church, which those who are vastated as to faith do not acknowledge; and thus it was with the most ancient church, of which a remnant remained until the time of the flood, and continued after that event. This remnant of the church is called “Noah.”
