사람은 그가 설득된, 즉 인정하고 믿는 모든 것을 통해 일종의 생명을 얻습니다. 설득되지 않았거나 인정도 믿지도 않는 것으로는 사람의 마음에 아무 영향도 끼칠 수 없습니다. 그리고 그래서 인정할 정도로 설득되었고 아직 부인하지는 않고 있는 한, 아무도 거룩한 것들을 모독할 수 없습니다. 인정하지 않는 사람들은 아마 알면서도 마치 모르는 것처럼 있습니다. 존재하지 않는 것들을 아는 사람들처럼 말이지요. 주님 강림의 때에 유대인들의 모습이 저랬습니다. 그래서 말씀에서 저들을 가리켜 ‘황폐해졌다’, 혹은 ‘파괴되어 초토화되었다’, 즉, 더이상 무슨 신앙이라는 게 없다 하는 것입니다. 이런 상황 가운데서는, 말씀의 속뜻이 그들에게 오픈된다고 해서 그들이 무슨 해를 받거나 하는 일은 전혀 없습니다. 그들은 비록 보고 있으나 아직 못 보며, 듣고 있으나 아직 못 듣기 때문입니다. 이들의 마음은 꽉 막혀 있습니다. 이들에 관하여 주님은 이사야에서 말씀하셨습니다. A man acquires a life by all the things he is persuaded of, that is, which he acknowledges and believes. That of which he is not persuaded, or does not acknowledge and believe, does not affect his mind. And therefore no one can profane holy things unless he has been so persuaded of them that he acknowledges them, and yet denies them. Those who do not acknowledge may know, but are as if they did not know, and are like those who know things that have no existence. Such were the Jews about the time of the Lord’s advent, and therefore they are said in the Word to be “vastated” or “laid waste,” that is, to have no longer any faith. Under these circumstances it does men no injury to have the interior contents of the Word opened to them, for they are as persons seeing, and yet not seeing; hearing, and yet not hearing; whose hearts are stopped up; of whom the Lord says in Isaiah:

9여호와께서 이르시되 가서 이 백성에게 이르기를 너희가 듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못할 것이요 보기는 보아도 알지 못하리라 하여 10이 백성의 마음을 둔하게 하며 그들의 귀가 막히고 그들의 눈이 감기게 하라 염려하건대 그들이 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨닫고 다시 돌아와 고침을 받을까 하노라 하시기로 (사6:9-10) Go and tell this people, Hearing hear ye, but understand not, and seeing see ye, but know not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and smear their eyes, lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, so that they be healed. (Isa. 6:9–10)

사람들이 그런 상태, 즉 너무나 황폐해져서 더 이상 아무것도 안 믿는 상태(앞서 말씀드린 대로, 그들이 신앙의 신비들을 모독할 수 없는)가 될 때까지 신앙의 신비들은 밝히 알려지지 않는다는 것을 주님은 같은 이사야 계속 이어지는 구절들에서 아주 분명히 선포하고 계십니다. That the mysteries of faith are not revealed until men are in such a state, that is, are so vastated that they no longer believe (in order, as before said, that they may not be able to profane them), the Lord also plainly declares in the subsequent verses of the same prophet:

11내가 이르되 주여 어느 때까지니이까 하였더니 주께서 대답하시되 성읍들은 황폐하여 주민이 없으며 가옥들에는 사람이 없고 이 토지는 황폐하게 되며 12여호와께서 사람들을 멀리 옮기셔서 이 땅 가운데에 황폐한 곳이 많을 때까지니라 (사6:11-12) Then said I, Lord, how long? And he said, Even until the cities are desolated, so that there be no inhabitant; and the houses, so that there be no man, and the ground be utterly desolated, and Jehovah have removed man. (Isa. 6:11, 12)

그를 일컬어 지혜로운 혹은 인정하고 믿는 ‘사람’이라 하고 있습니다. 유대인들은, 이미 말씀드린 것처럼, 주님이 오셨을 때 그 정도로 황폐한 상태였습니다. 같은 이유로, 그들은 지금도 여전히 탐욕, 특히 욕심으로 말미암아 그런 황폐함 가운데 있습니다. 그들이 비록 주님에 관해 수천 번을 듣고 있고, 또 그들의 교회 여러 표상들이 그 어느 것 하나 다 예외 없이 주님을 가리키고 있음에도 불구하고 말이지요. 그들은 여전히 아무것도 인정하지 않으며, 안 믿고 있습니다. 이것이 노아 이전 고대인들이 에덴동산에서 내쫓기고 황폐해진, 심지어 더이상 어떠한 진리도 인정할 수 없는 지경까지 황폐해진 이유였습니다. He is called a “man” who is wise, or who acknowledges and believes. The Jews were thus vastated, as already said, at the time of the Lord’s advent; and for the same reason they are still kept in such vastation by their cupidities, and especially by their avarice, that although they hear of the Lord a thousand times, and that the representatives of their church are significative of him in every particular, yet they acknowledge and believe nothing. This then was the reason why the antediluvians were cast out of the garden of Eden, and vastated even until they were no longer capable of acknowledging any truth.

이것이 왜 유대인들에게는 신앙의 신비들이 절대로 계시되지 않았는가 하는 이유입니다. 그들은 사람의 사후에도 삶이 있다는 것과 주님이 그들을 구원하시러 세상에 오실 것이라는 말씀들조차 전혀 귀기울이지 않았습니다. 그들은 정말 대단할 정도로 무지하고 어리석더니, 그때도 고집스럽게 그랬고, 지금도 그래요, 속 사람의 존재나 내적인 것들에 관해 그때도 몰랐고, 지금도 그렇습니다. 그들이 만일 그걸 인정하고자 전부터 그걸 알았었거나 지금 알게 된다면, 그들은 기어코 그걸 신성모독, 기어코 저세상에서 자기들 몫의 어떤 구원도 남겨 놓지 않을 그런 캐릭터들이기 때문입니다. 이것이 주께서 요한복음에서 하신 말씀의 의미입니다. This is the reason why the mysteries of faith were never revealed to the Jews. They were not even plainly told that they were to live after death, nor that the Lord would come into the world to save them. So great were the ignorance and stupidity in which they were kept, and still are kept, that they did not and do not know of the existence of the internal man, or of anything internal, for if they had known of it, or if they now knew of it, so as to acknowledge it, such is their character that they would profane it, and there would be no hope of any salvation for them in the other life. This is what is meant by the Lord in John:

그들의 눈을 멀게 하시고 그들의 마음을 완고하게 하셨으니 이는 그들로 하여금 눈으로 보고 마음으로 깨닫고 돌이켜 내게 고침을 받지 못하게 하려 함이라 하였음이더라 (요12:40) He hath blinded their eyes, and stopped up their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and convert themselves, and I should heal them. (John 12:40)

그리고 주께서 그들에게 풀이 없이 비유로만 말씀하신 이유입니다. 안 그러면 그들이 보며 들으며 깨닫게 되기 때문입니다. 주님이 친히 말씀하신 것처럼 말입니다. And by the Lord speaking to them in parables without explaining to them their meaning, lest (as he himself says),

그러므로 내가 그들에게 비유로 말하는 것은 그들이 보아도 보지 못하며 들어도 듣지 못하며 깨닫지 못함이니라 (마13:13) Seeing they should see, and hearing they should hear, and should understand. (Matt. 13:13)

같은 이유로, 신앙의 모든 신비가 그들에게는 숨겨졌고, 그들의 교회의 표상들 속으로 봉인되었으며, 같은 이유로, 예언적 스타일 또한 그 캐릭터가 같은 것입니다. 그렇지만, 아는 것이 있고, 인정하는 것이 있습니다. 알고는 있는데 인정하지는 않는 사람은 마치 그걸 몰랐던 사람인 것처럼 있습니다. 그런데 인정해놓고, 나중에 신성모독 및 불경하게 말하는 사람이 있습니다. 이것이 주님이 하신 이 말씀들의 의미입니다. For the same reason all the mysteries of faith were hidden from them, and were concealed under the representatives of their church, and for the same reason the prophetic style is of the same character. It is however one thing to know, and another to acknowledge. He who knows and does not acknowledge is as if he knew not; but it is he who acknowledges and afterwards blasphemes and profanes, that is meant by these words of the Lord.

또 다른 아르카나는, 그들이 만일 신앙의 신비들을 배웠더라면 그들은 영원히 소멸되었을 꺼라는 것으로, 이것이 본문, ‘그가 그의 손을 들어 생명 나무 열매도 따먹고 영생할까 하노라’가 상징하는 것입니다. 그 경우는 이런 것인데요, 사람들이 생명의 질서에 역행하는 삶을 살아온 나머지 이제는 사는 것도, 지혜로워지는 것도 스스로의 힘과 자신들의 본성(own)으로가 아니면 내켜 하지 않을 때, 그들은 신앙에 대해 듣는 모든 걸 그게 과연 그런지 따져보기를 스스로의 힘으로, 그리고 감각과 기억-지식에 속한 자신들의 본성으로 하기 때문에, 필연적으로 부인(denial) 및 그 결과, 신성모독(blasphemy)과 불경(profanation)에 이르게 되고, 그래서 결국, 그들은 세속적인 것들에다가 거룩을 뒤섞는 일을 전혀 아무렇지도 않게 합니다. 사람이 이 지경이 되면, 그는 저세상에서 유죄 선고를 받아 구원받을 아무 희망도 남지 않게 됩니다. 그 이유는, 신성모독으로 섞인 것들은 그렇게 섞인 상태로 있게 되고, 그래서 어떤 거룩한 생각이 떠오를 때마다 그것과 결합 되어 있는 불경한 생각 또한 따라 나오게 되어, 그 결과, 그 사람은 지옥 말고는 그 어떤 데에도 있을 수가 없기 때문입니다. 이런 식으로 섞여 결합된 생각은 무엇이든지 그 한 조각 생각만으로도 저세상에서는 정말 가장 기가 막힌 방법으로 지각이 됩니다. 심지어 영들의 세계에 있는 영들에 의해서, 그리고 천사 같은 영들에 의해서는 훨씬 더 그런데요, 그들은 무슨 한 조각 생각만으로도 어떤 사람의 캐릭터 전체를 정말 절묘하게 지각합니다. 이렇게 결합되어 있는 신성모독과 거룩 간 분리는 지옥과도 같은 고통을 맛보지 않고는 일어날 수가 없는데요, 이런 고통은 사람이 이런 일에 깨어 있어 지옥 자체를 피하려는 듯 주의 깊게 신성모독을 피하고자 할 때 겪는 그런 고통입니다. The other arcanum is that had they been instructed in the mysteries of faith they would have perished eternally, which is signified by the words, “now lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of lives, and eat, and live to eternity.” The case is this: When men have become inverted orders of life, and are unwilling to live, or to become wise, except from themselves and from their own, they reason about everything they hear respecting faith, as to whether it is so, or not; and as they do this from themselves and from their own things of sense and of memory-knowledge, it must needs lead to denial, and consequently to blasphemy and profanation, so that at length they do not scruple to mix up profane things with holy. When a man becomes like this, he is so condemned in the other life that there remains for him no hope of salvation. For things mixed up by profanation remain so mixed up, so that whenever any idea of something holy presents itself, an idea of something profane that is conjoined with it is also there, the consequence of which is that the person cannot be in any society except one of the damned. Whatever is present in any idea of thought in consequence of being conjoined with it, is most exquisitely perceived in the other life, even by spirits in the world of spirits, and much more so by angelic spirits, so exquisitely indeed that from a single idea they know a person’s character. The separation of profane and holy ideas when thus conjoined cannot be effected except by means of such infernal torment that if a man were aware of it he would as carefully avoid profanation as he would avoid hell itself.
