천국의 모든 것과 사람의 모든 것 간에는 어떤 상응이 존재한다

There Is a Correspondence of All Things of Heaven with All Things of Man

오늘날 사람들은 무엇이 상응(相應, correspondence)인지 모르고 있다. 그 이유에는 여러 가지가 있으나 가장 큰 이유는, 사람이 자기 사랑(the love of self)과 세상 사랑(the love of the world)으로 인해 천국으로부터 멀어졌기 때문이다. 자기 자신과 세상을 무엇보다 가장 사랑하는 사람은 세상 것에만 관심이 있다. 세상 것이 그의 외적 감각(the external senses)을 즐겁게 하고, 그의 성향(the natural longings)을 만족시키기 때문이다. 이들은 내적 감각(the internal senses)과 정신(the mind)을 만족케 하는 영적인 것에는 관심이 없고, 너무 고차원적이라고 거부한다. 고대인들(the ancient people)은 그렇지 않았다. 그들에게는 상응에 관한 지식(the knowledge of correspondences)이 가장 중요한 지식이었다. 상응의 지식에 의해 그들은 지성(intelligence)과 지혜(wisdom)를 얻었고, 상응의 지식은 천사들의 지식이므로 교회에 속한 사람들은 상응 지식에 의해 천국과 교통했다. 가장 오래전 사람들인 태고인들(太古)은 천적인 사람들(天的, celestial men)이었으므로 천사들처럼 상응 자체로 생각했다. 따라서 그들은 천사와 대화했고, 주님도 자주 그들에게 나타나셔서 그들을 가르치셨다. 그러나 지금은 상응에 대한 지식이 완전히 상실되어 상응이 무엇인지조차 모르게 된 것이다.주72 What correspondence is, is not known at the present day, for several reasons, the chief of which is that man has withdrawn himself from heaven by the love of self and love of the world. For he that loves self and the world above all things gives heed only to worldly things, since these appeal to the external senses and gratify the natural longings; and he does not give heed to spiritual things, since these appeal to the internal senses and gratify the mind, therefore he casts them aside, saying that they are too high for his comprehension. This was not so with the ancient people. To them the knowledge of correspondences was the chief of knowledges. By means of it they acquired intelligence and wisdom; and by means of it those who were of the church had communication with heaven; for the knowledge of correspondences is angelic knowledge. The most ancient people, who were celestial men, thought from correspondence itself, as the angels do. And therefore they talked with angels, and the Lord frequently appeared to them, and they were taught by him. But at this day that knowledge has been so completely lost that no one knows what correspondence is.72

 

 

주72. 상응의 지식은 그 밖의 다른 지식을 얼마나 초월하는가? How far the knowledge of correspondences excels other knowledges (n. 4280). 상응 지식은 태고인의 지식 중 첫째였다. 그러나 지금은 완전히 잊어버린 지식이 되었다. The knowledge of correspondences was the chief knowledge of the ancient people; but at the present day it is wholly forgotten (n. 3021, 3419, 4280, 4749, 4844, 4964, 4966, 6004, 7729, 10252). 상응 지식은 동방 여러 나라들과 이집트에서 번창했다. The knowledge of correspondences flourished among the Eastern nations and in Egypt (n. 5702, 6692, 7097, 7779, 9391, 10407).
