※ 천국 기쁨의 본질에 대해 무지했던 어떤 영들이 갑자기 사로잡혀 천국으로 옮겨졌습니다. 그들은 그전에 이렇게 천국으로 옮겨지는 것이 가능하도록 그들의 육체에 속한 것들, 곧 육체적 욕망과 상상 속에나 나올 법한 생각들, 곧 환상이 모두 잠재워진 후에야 천국에 들어갈 수 있었습니다.

천국 기쁨의 본질에 대해 무지했던 어떤 영들이 갑자기 사로잡혀 천국으로 옮겨졌습니다. 그들은 그전에 이렇게 천국으로 옮겨지는 것이 가능하도록 그들의 육체에 속한 것들, 곧 육체적 욕망과 상상 속에나 나올 법한 생각들, 곧 환상이 모두 잠재워진 후에야 천국에 들어갈 수 있었습니다. 거기서 저는 어떤 사람이 저에게 다음과 같이 말하는 것을 들었습니다. 지금 자기는 처음에는 천국 기쁨이 얼마나 엄청난지를 느꼈다고, 자기는 그동안 천국에 대해 전혀 다른, 엉뚱한 생각을 갖도록 단단히 속아왔다고, 그러나 지금은 자기 내적 존재 저 깊은 데까지 측량할 수 없는 기쁨을 지각하였는데, 이것은 자기가 몸 안에서 살 때는 결코 맛본 적 없는 즐거움이라고, 사람들은 몸 안에 살면서 그걸로 기뻐하고 그러는데, 지금 보면 그건 그냥 악취였다고 말입니다. Certain spirits who were ignorant of the nature of heavenly joy were unexpectedly taken up into heaven after they had been brought into such a state as to render this possible, that is to say a state in which their bodily things and fanciful notions were lulled into quiescence. From there I heard one saying to me that now for the first time he felt how great is the joy in heaven, and that he had been very greatly deceived in having a different idea of it, but that now he perceived in his inmost being a joy immeasurably greater than he had ever felt in any bodily pleasure such as men are delighted with in the life of the body, and which he called foul.

※ 저세상에 들어오는 거의 모든 사람이 천국 행복과 지복(至福, bliss)의 본질에 대하여 무지합니다. 내적 기쁨의 본질과 퀄러티에 대해 모르기 때문이지요. 그들은 그저 육체와 세상의 기쁨과 즐거움을 가지고 좀 미루어 짐작할 뿐입니다. 그들은 자기들이 모르는 것에 대해서는 그건 아무 것도 아닌 걸로 여깁니다. 그러나 실상은, 육체적이고 세속적인 즐거움이야말로 아무 것도 아닌, 아주 더러운 것입니다.

저세상에 들어오는 거의 모든 사람이 천국 행복과 지복(至福, bliss)의 본질에 대하여 무지합니다. 내적 기쁨의 본질과 퀄러티에 대해 모르기 때문이지요. 그들은 그저 육체와 세상의 기쁨과 즐거움을 가지고 좀 미루어 짐작할 뿐입니다. 그들은 자기들이 모르는 것에 대해서는 그건 아무 것도 아닌 걸로 여깁니다. 그러나 실상은, 육체적이고 세속적인 즐거움이야말로 아무 것도 아닌, 아주 더러운 것입니다. 성품은 좋으나 천국에 대해서는 무지한 사람들로 하여금 천국의 기쁨이라는 것이 무엇인지 배우며 알 수 있도록, 그들을 모든 상상을 뛰어넘는 파라다이스들의 첫 번째 장소로 데려갑니다. (이곳에 관해서는 주님의 신적 자비, 곧 허락하심으로 나중에 밝히겠습니다. cf. 1622) 그곳에 도착하면 그들은 자기들은 지금 천국의 파라다이스에 도착했다 생각합니다. 그러나 그들은 이것은 천국의 참된 기쁨이 아니라는 것과, 다음 순서로, 허락하심을 받아 그들의 가장 깊은 내면에까지 지각되는 기쁨의 내적 상태들을 맛보게 됩니다. 그들은 평화의 상태, 심지어 가장 내적인 데까지 옮겨졌고, 거기서 그들은 고백하기를, 지금 이 상태, 이 기쁨은 그 어떤 말로도 전혀 표현할 수 없고, 그 어떤 것으로도 전혀 상상할 수 없는 것이라고 하였습니다. 최종적으로, 그들은 이노센스 상태로 인도되었고, 또한 그들의 가장 내적 느낌, 곧 가장 깊은 레벨의 감각으로도 인도되었습니다. 이렇게 그들은 허락하심을 받아 참된 영적, 천적 선의 본질에 대하여 배웠습니다. Almost all who come into the other life are ignorant of the nature of heavenly happiness and bliss, because they know not the nature and quality of inward joy. They form a conception of it merely from the delights and joys of the body and the world. What they are ignorant of they suppose to be nothing, the truth being that bodily and worldly joys are relatively non-existent and foul. In order therefore that those who are well disposed may learn and may know what heavenly joy is, they are taken in the first place to paradises that surpass every conception of the imagination (concerning which, of the Lord’s Divine mercy hereafter), and they suppose that they have arrived in the paradise of heaven; but they are taught that this is not true heavenly happiness, and are therefore permitted to experience interior states of joy which are perceptible to their inmost being. They are then transported into a state of peace, even to their inmost being, and they confess that nothing of it is at all expressible or conceivable. And finally they are introduced into a state of innocence, also to their inmost feeling. In this way are they permitted to learn the nature of true spiritual and celestial good.

※ 몸 안에 있었던 생애 동안 간음과 간통의 빛 가운데 살았던 어떤 영이 간절히 원한 덕분에 천국의 첫 번째 문턱에 들어가 보도록 허락을 받았습니다. 그가 거기 도착하자마자 그는 고통스러워했고, 자신에게서 죽은 사람의 악취가 나는 것을 도저히 견딜 수 없을 정도로 느끼기 시작했습니다. 그는 내가 여기 더 머물렀다간 소멸되겠구나 싶어 다 내던지고 더 낮은 곳으로 뛰어내렸습니다.

몸 안에 있었던 생애 동안 간음과 간통의 빛 가운데 살았던 어떤 영이 간절히 원한 덕분에 천국의 첫 번째 문턱에 들어가 보도록 허락을 받았습니다. 그가 거기 도착하자마자 그는 고통스러워했고, 자신에게서 죽은 사람의 악취가 나는 것을 도저히 견딜 수 없을 정도로 느끼기 시작했습니다. 그는 내가 여기 더 머물렀다간 소멸되겠구나 싶어 다 내던지고 더 낮은 곳으로 뛰어내렸습니다. 그는 천국 첫 문턱, 고작 간음과 정반대되는 영역에 도착했다는 사실 하나만으로 그런 고통을 겪어야만 하는 사실에 격분했습니다. 그는 불행한 사람들과 함께 있습니다. A certain spirit who during his life in the body had made light of adulteries, was in accordance with his desire admitted to the first threshold of heaven. As soon as he came there he began to suffer and to be sensible of his own cadaverous stench, until he could endure it no longer. It seemed to him that if he went any farther he should perish, and he was therefore cast down to the lower earth, enraged that he should feel such torment at the first threshold of heaven, merely because he had arrived in a sphere that was contrary to adulteries. He is among the unhappy.
