아담이 이르되 이는 내 뼈 중의 뼈요 살 중의 살이라 이것을 남자에게서 취하였은즉 여자라 부르리라 하니라 And the man said, This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; therefore she shall be called wife, because she was taken out of man [vir]. (창2:23)

156. ‘뼈 중의 뼈요 살 중의 살’은 겉사람의 own을, ‘뼈’는 이 own이 그다지 생명 공급을 받지 못했다는 것을, 그리고 ‘살’은 생명 공급을 받은 own을 각각 상징합니다. “Bone of bones and flesh of flesh” signify the own of the external man; “bone,” this own not so much vivified, and “flesh,” the own that is vivified.

나아가 아담은 속사람을 상징하며, 이어지는 구절에 서술된 대로 겉사람과 커플을 이룸으로써 앞서 ‘여자’라 부르던 own이 여기서는 ‘아내’로 명명됩니다. Man, moreover, signifies the internal man, and from his being so coupled with the external man as is stated in the subsequent verse, the own which was before called “woman” is here denominated “wife.”

한글 번역에는 빠졌지만, ‘이제’는 상태가 바뀌었기 때문에 지금 이렇게 되었다는 뜻입니다. “Now” signifies that it was thus effected at this time because the state was changed.

157. ‘뼈 중의 뼈요 살 중의 살’이라는 표현이 그 안에 속사람이 들어 있는 겉사람의 own을 상징한다는 점 때문에, 고대에는 자기들의 own [proprii]이라 할 수 있는 모든 사람을 ‘뼈 중의 뼈요 살 중의 살’로 불렀습니다. 가계, 혈통, 그 밖의 무슨 관계든지 말이지요. Inasmuch as “bone of bones and flesh of flesh” signified the own of the external man in which was the internal, therefore in ancient times all those were called “bone of bones and flesh of flesh” who could be called their own [proprii], and were of one house, or of one family, or in any degree of relationship.

그래서 라반이 야곱에게 이렇게 말한 것입니다. Thus Laban said of Jacob,

너는 참으로 내 혈육이로다 Surely thou art my bone and my flesh (창29:14)

아비멜렉도 그의 어머니의 형제들과 그의 외조부의 집 온 가족에게 이렇게 말합니다. And Abimelech said of his mother’s brethren, and of the family of the house of his mother’s father,

나는 너희와 골육임을 기억하라 Remember that I am your bone and your flesh (삿9:2)

이스라엘 지파들 역시 다윗에게 찾아와 자신들을 이렇게 말하고요, The tribes of Israel also said of themselves to David,

보소서 우리는 왕의 한 골육이니이다 Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh (삼하5:1)

158. 아담이 속사람, 같은 말이지만, 지성과 지혜의 사람을 상징한다는 것은 이사야를 보면 분명합니다. That man signifies the internal man, or what is the same, one who is intelligent and wise, is plain from Isaiah:

내가 본즉 한 사람도 없으며 내가 물어도 그들 가운데에 한 말도 대답할 조언자가 없도다 I behold, and there is no man [vir], even among them, and there is no counselor (사41:28)

지혜와 지성을 가진 사람이 아무도 없다는 뜻이지요. meaning none wise and intelligent.

위 본문의 ‘사람’은 라틴어로 ‘비르(vir)’입니다. 라틴어에 ‘사람’이라는 뜻의 ‘호모(homo)’라는 말이 따로 있지만, ‘호모’에 비해 ‘비르’는 지혜와 지성을 가진 사람이라는 뜻이며, 위 본문에서는 바로 이 ‘비르’가 사용되었습니다.

예레미야도 보면은, Also in Jeremiah:

너희는 예루살렘 거리로 빨리 다니며 그 넓은 거리에서 찾아보고 알라 너희가 만일 정의를 행하며 진리를 구하는 자를 한 사람이라도 찾으면 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see if ye can find a man, if there be any executing judgment, seeking the truth (렘5:1)

여기 ‘정의를 행하는 자’는 지혜로운 사람을, ‘진리를 구하는 자’는 지성인을 각각 의미합니다. “One who executes judgment” means a wise person; and “one who seeks the truth,” an intelligent one.

159. 하지만 먼저 천적인 사람의 상태에 대한 선이해 없이는 어떻게 이런 일들이 그런 경우가 되는지 지각하기가 쉽지 않습니다. But it is not easy to perceive how the case is with these things unless the state of the celestial man is understood.

천적인 사람 안에서 속사람은 겉사람과 뚜렷이 구별되는데요, 실제로 천적인 사람은 속사람에게 속한 것과 겉사람에게 속한 것, 그리고 겉사람이 주님으로 말미암아 속사람을 통해서 어떻게 다스림을 받는지를 지각할 수 있을 정도입니다. In the celestial man the internal man is distinct from the external, indeed so distinct that the celestial man perceives what belongs to the internal man, and what to the external, and how the external man is governed through the internal by the Lord.

그런데 이런 천적인 사람들의 후손의 상태가 변했습니다. 그들이 자신들의 own을 간절히 원했기 때문인데요, 그것은 겉사람에게 속한 것이었고, 그 결과, 그들은 변질되어 속사람은 겉사람하고는 완전히 다른 것이라는 사실을 더 이상 지각 조차 못 할 정도가 되었습니다. 대신 속 사람이란 건 그저 겉 사람과 같은 것인가보다 정도로만 여기게 되었지요. 이런 종류의 어처구니없는 퍼셉션은 사람이 자신의 own을 향해 기울어질 때 생기기 때문입니다. But the state of the posterity of this celestial man, in consequence of desiring their own, which belongs to the external man, was so changed that they no longer perceived the internal man to be distinct from the external, but imagined the internal to be one with the external, for such a perception takes place when man inclines to his own.

여호와 하나님이 아담에게서 취하신 그 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고 그를 아담에게로 이끌어 오시니 And the rib which Jehovah God had taken from the man, he built into a woman, and brought her to the man. (창2:22)

155. ‘그 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고’라는 말씀에는 지금까지 누가 이 말씀을 글자로만 연구하여 발견할 수 있었던 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것들이 사실은 그 안에 봉인되어 있습니다. The words “a rib was built into a woman” have more things inmostly concealed in them than it is possible for anyone ever to discover from the letter;

주님의 말씀은 그 가장 내적 의미들로는 주님 자신과 주님의 나라에 관한 것이며, 말씀의 모든 생명이 여기서 나오기 때문입니다. for the Word of the Lord is such that its inmost contents regard the Lord himself and his kingdom, and from this comes all the life of the Word.

위 본문은 그래서 사실은 그 가장 내적 의미들로는 천국 결혼에 관한 것입니다. And so in the passage before us, it is the heavenly marriage that is regarded in its inmost contents.

천국 결혼은 주님의 생명으로 생생해진 own, 또는 생생해질 때의 own 가운데 존재하는 본성이 있으며, 이런 천국 결혼을 가리켜 주님의 ‘신부요 아내’라고 합니다. The heavenly marriage is of such a nature that it exists in the own, which, when vivified by the Lord, is called the “bride and wife” of the Lord.

이렇게 사람의 생생해진 own은 모든 사랑의 선과 신앙의 진리에 관한 퍼셉션을 갖게 되며, 그 결과, 말로 어떻게 표현할 수가 없는, 그런 행복과 결합된 모든 지혜와 지성을 갖게 됩니다. Man’s own thus vivified has a perception of all the good of love and truth of faith, and consequently possesses all wisdom and intelligence conjoined with inexpressible happiness.

그러나 이 생생해진 own, 곧 주님의 ‘신부요 아내’라 일컬음을 받는 이 own의 본성은 간결하게 설명될 수가 없는 본성입니다. But the nature of this vivified own, which is called the “bride and wife” of the Lord, cannot be concisely explained.

그래서 다음과 같은 사실을 살피는 정도로 충분할 것 같은데요, 천사들은 자기들이 주님으로 말미암아 산다는 걸 지각한다는 것입니다. 이 생각의 끈을 놓을 경우, 그들조차 자기들은 자기들 힘으로 살아가는 것으로밖에는 모르는 존재들이지만 말입니다. Suffice it therefore to observe that the angels perceive that they live from the Lord, although when not reflecting on the subject they know no other than that they live from themselves;

그러나 그들에게는 다음과 같은 애정 어린 본성이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 천사들은 사랑의 선과 신앙의 진리로부터 아주 살짝만 이탈해도 금방 그 차이를 지각한다는 것인데요, 그 결과, 그들은 평화와 행복을 늘 즐겁게 누리는, 도저히 말로 어떻게 표현할 수가 없는 상태 가운데 있게 됩니다. 자기들은 주님으로 말미암아 산다라는 사실을 지각하는, 천사라면 누구나 가지고 있는 이 퍼셉션 가운데 그들이 있는 동안은 말입니다. but there is a general affection of such a nature that at the least departure from the good of love and truth of faith they perceive a change, and consequently they are in the enjoyment of their peace and happiness, which is inexpressible, while they are in their general perception that they live from the Lord.

아래 예레미야에서 의미하는 own 역시 바로 이것입니다. It is this own also that is meant in Jeremiah, where it is said:

반역한 딸아 네가 어느 때까지 방황하겠느냐 여호와가 새 일을 세상에 창조하였나니 곧 여자가 남자를 둘러싸리라 Jehovah hath created a new thing in the earth, a woman shall compass a man (Jer. 31:22)

이 구절 역시 그 상징하는 바는 바로 천국 결혼입니다. 여기서 ‘여자’는 주님의 생명을 공급받아 생생해진 own을 의미하는데, ‘둘러싸리라’는 표현으로 서술되었지요. 이 own은 마치 살로 대신 채워진 갈빗대가 심장을 둘러싸 보호하듯 그렇게 둘러싸는 것입니다. It is the heavenly marriage that is signified in this passage also, where by a “woman” is meant the own vivified by the Lord, of which woman the expression “to compass” is predicated, because this own is such that it encompasses, as a rib made flesh encompasses the heart.

154. 악과 거짓 말고도 뭐가 가능하다면 그것은 인간의 own이 아니며, 인간의 own으로부터는 그런 게 가능할 수가 없습니다. Nothing evil and false is ever possible which is not man’s own, and from man’s own, 인간의 own은 그 자체가 악이며, 그 결과, 인간은 그저 악하고 거짓될 뿐이기 때문입니다.

이런 실상을 저는 다음과 같은 사실을 통해 분명히 알게 되었습니다. 영들의 세계에서는 in the world of spirits, 인간의 own에 관한 것들이 the things of man’s own 눈으로 볼 수 있도록 프리젠테이션이 되는데, 그때 그 생김새라는 것이 너무나 어글리하고 기괴하여 어떻게 말로 표현한다는 것이 도저히 불가능할 정도로 보기 흉측합니다. 그 own의 본성에 따라 차이는 있지만 말입니다. 자신의 own으로부터 이런 실상을 목격한 사람은 he to whom the things of the own are visibly exhibited 공포에 가까운 충격을 받고, 마치 악마로부터 도망치듯 자기 자신으로부터 도망치고 싶어 합니다.

그러나 주님의 생명으로 생생한 삶을 살아온 사람의 own에 관한 것들은 the things of man’s own that have been vivified by the Lord 참으로 아름답고 사랑스럽게 나타납니다. 주님의 천적인 것들을 담을 수 있는 삶에 따라 according to the life to which the celestial of the Lord can be applied 다양하게 말이지요. 실제로 이웃을 향한 사랑으로 기부의 삶을 살았거나 활력 넘치는 삶을 살아온 사람들은 those who have been endowed with charity, or vivified by it, 가장 아름다운 얼굴을 가진 소년 소녀들로 나타납니다. 순진무구 가운데 있는 사람들은, those who are in innocence, 가슴에는 여러 다양한 화환 장식으로 두르고, 머리에는 왕관들을 쓰며, 다이아몬드 같은 아우라 가운데 자랑스럽게 지내는, 가장 내적 천국에서 오는 행복 퍼셉션을 가진 having a perception of happiness from the very inmost 벌거벗은 유아들로 나타납니다.
