16절, 또 여자에게 이르시되 내가 네게 임신하는 고통을 크게 더하리니 네가 수고하고 자식을 낳을 것이며 너는 남편을 원하고 남편은 너를 다스릴 것이니라 하시고 And unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth sons, and thine obedience shall be to thy man [vir], and he shall rule over thee.

‘남편’이 래셔널(the rational, 합리적, 이성적 사고능력)을 의미한다는 건 본 장 6절에 보면 있는데요, 거기에 보면, ‘여자가 그 열매를 따먹고 자기와 함께 있는 남편에게도 주매 그도 먹은지라’, 즉 그도 동의했음을 의미합니다. 같은 내용이 158번 글, 아담에 관한 내용을 보아도 분명한데요, 거기 보면, 아담(남자, 사람, vir)은 지혜와 지성을 가진 사람을 의미합니다. 하지만 여기 나오는 ‘남편’은 래셔널을 말하는데요, 선악과, 곧 지식의 나무(the tree of knowledge)를 먹음으로써 지혜와 지성이 파괴된, 그 결과, 아무것도 안 남았기 때문입니다. 래셔널이라는 건 외관상 그럴듯하게 지성을 흉내 내는 것이기 때문입니다. That by “man” [vir] is signified the rational appears from verse 6 of this chapter, in that the woman gave to her man with her, and he did eat, by which is meant his consent; and the same is also evident from what was said of the man in n. 158, where by him is meant one who is wise and intelligent. Here however “man” denotes the rational, because in consequence of the destruction of wisdom and intelligence by eating of the tree of knowledge, nothing else was left, for the rational is imitative of intelligence, being as it were its semblance.
