세 아들을 낳았으니 셈과 함과 야벳이라 And Noah begat three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (창6:10)

616. ‘세 아들을 낳았으니’는 그 교회에서 일어난 세 종류의 교리, 신학(theology)을 말하며, ‘셈과 함과 야벳이라’가 의미하는 게 바로 그것입니다. “Noah begat three sons” signifies that three kinds of doctrine thence arose, which are meant by “Shem, Ham, and Japheth.”

617. 세 아들을 낳았으니 이것은 거기, 곧 노아 교회에서 세 종류의 새 교리, 신학이 일어남에 대한 상징이라는 것은, 앞서 살핀 모든 내용들(AC.337, 339, 402, 468), 곧 이름들은 오직 다양한 교회들, 그리고 같은 말이지만, 교리들, 신학들을 상징할 뿐이라는 내용들을 보면 분명합니다. 여기서도 그렇습니다. 그럼에도 이름들이 여기 언급되는 이유는 순전히 이전 내용의 연속성 혹은 본문의 문맥 때문인데, 그것은 주님이 예견하신 것으로, 이런 지니어스를 가진 사람들, 곧 타고난 마음이 이렇게 움직이는 사람들은 체어리티, 곧 이웃 사랑이라는 선물을 받을 수 있다는 것입니다. 비록 그 가운데서 세 종류의 다른 교리들이 생겨남에도 불구하고 말이지요. 이들 세 교리, 곧 신학은 아래 셈, 함 및 야벳을 다루는 데서 주님의 자비, 곧 허락하심으로 말씀드리겠습니다. Noah begat three sons. That this signifies that three kinds of doctrine thence arose is evident from all that has been shown before about names signifying nothing else than churches, or, what is the same, doctrines. So it is here; but here they are merely mentioned for the sake of the series or connection with the things that precede, which are, that it was foreseen by the Lord that the man of this genius could be endowed with charity; but yet that three kinds of doctrines would thence have birth, which doctrines, of the Lord’s Divine mercy, shall be described hereafter, where Shem, Ham, and Japheth are treated of.

618. ‘노아는 의인이요 완전한 자라’, ‘하나님과 동행하였으며’, 그리고 본 절, ‘세 아들을 낳았으니’ 모두 과거 시제로 언급되었다는 사실, 이 모두, 아직 미래의 일인데 말이지요. 그 이유를 알기 위해서는 먼저 속뜻이라는 건, 시간, 즉 시제하고는 상관이 없다는 사실을 알아야 합니다. 최초의 언어(the original language, 원어)는 이런 방식을 선호합니다. 거기서는 종종 한 가지 같은 말을 가지고 아무 시제에나 상관없이 사용합니다. 시제에 따라 다른 말을 쓰는 게 아니고요. 그렇게 하면, 그 속뜻, 그 내적인 것들이 더 명료해지기 때문입니다. 언어는 이런 융통성을 그 속뜻으로부터 얻는데요, 그 풍부함이란, 사람들이 믿을 수 없을 정도입니다. 이것이 바로 왜 시제라든지 혹은 언어 문법의 어떤 엄격함 같은 걸 따지지 않았을까 하는 이유가 되겠습니다. That “Noah was righteous and perfect,” that he “walked with God,” and in this verse that he “begat three sons,” is all said in the past tense, and yet these expressions look to the future. It should be known that the internal sense is such that it has no relation to times; and this the original language favors, where sometimes one and the same word is applicable to any time whatever, without using different words, for by this means interior things appear more evidently. The language derives this from the internal sense, which is more manifold than anyone could believe; and therefore it does not suffer itself to be limited by times and distinctions.
