여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고 And Jehovah saw that the evil of man was multiplied on the earth, and that all the imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil every day. (창6:5)

584. ‘여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함을 보시고’는, 선을 행하고자 하는 의지가 사라지기 시작했음을, ‘그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐이었다’는, 진리와 선에 관한 퍼셉션이 전혀 없었음을 각각 상징합니다. “Jehovah saw that the evil of man was multiplied on the earth” signifies that there began to be no will of good; “all the imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil every day” signifies that there was no perception of truth and good.

585. ‘사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함’이, 선을 행하고자 하는 의지가 사라지기 시작했음을 상징한다는 것은, 위에서 말씀드린 내용(cf. AC.568), 즉, 진정한 의지는 더 이상 존재하지 않고 대신 탐욕(cupidity), 욕구(desire)만 남았다는 사실을 통해 분명하고요, ‘세상에 있는 사람’이 상징하는 것을 통해서도 그렇습니다. That by the evil of man being multiplied in the earth is signified that there began to be no will of good is evident from what was said above, namely, that there was no longer any will, but only cupidity; and from the signification of “man in the earth.”

‘땅’, ‘세상’은 글자의 뜻으로는, 사람이 사는 곳을 말합니다. In the literal sense the “earth” is where man is.

‘땅’은 속뜻으로는, 사랑이 있는 곳, 그리고 사랑은 의지 혹은 욕망과 관련된 것이기 때문에, 사람의 의지 그 자체를 의미하기 위해 ‘땅’이 사용된 것입니다. In the internal sense it is where the love is, and as love is of the will, or of the cupidity, the earth is taken to mean the will itself of man.

사람을 사람 되게 하는 것은 의지입니다. 알고 있고, 이해한다고 해서 사람이 되는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 이 안다는 것, 이해한다는 것은 다 그의 의지에서 나오는 것이기 때문입니다. 그의 의지에서 나오지 않는 것은 그게 무엇이든 그는 알려고도 이해하려고도 하지 않습니다. 심지어 의도하지 않은 뭔가를 말하거나 하고 있을 때조차 거기엔 여전히 그의 의지와 관계된 뭔가가 있습니다. 지금 하고 있는 말이나 행위하고는 직접적 관련은 없어 보이나 사실은 은밀히 그를 움직이는 무슨 숨은 동기, 의지가 있는 것입니다. For man is man from willing, and not so much from knowing and understanding, because these flow out from his will; whatever does not flow out from his will he is willing neither to know nor understand; nay, even when he is speaking or doing something that he does not will, still there is something of the will remote from the speech or action that governs him.

‘가나안 땅’이라든지, ‘거룩한 땅’ 같은 표현을 써서 사실은 사랑, 그리고 결과적으로 천적(天的, the celestial) 인간의 의지를 나타내고 있습니다. 말씀 여러 곳에서 이런 사실을 분명히 확인할 수 있는데요, 같은 식으로, 세상 여러 나라들 역시 그들의 사랑, 곧 일반적으로는 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑을 나타내는 것입니다. 다만 이 주제는 아주 많이 반복되기 때문에 여기서 이걸 다루느라 머무를 필요는 없지 싶습니다. That the “land of Canaan,” or the “holy land,” denotes love, and consequently the will of the celestial man, might be confirmed by many passages from the Word; in like manner, that the lands of various nations denote their loves, which in general are the love of self and the love of the world; but as this subject so often recurs, it need not be dwelt upon here.

이런 이유들로, 이제 다음과 같은 결론을 내려보는데요, ‘땅(세상) 위 사람의 죄악’은 그의 자연적 악, 곧 그의 의지를 표현하는 세속적 악을 상징한다는 것입니다. 이 악을 ‘불어났다’, ‘배가되었다’라고 하는데, 그 이유는 모든 사람이 그 정도로 타락하지는, 즉, 철저하게 사악하지는 않았기 때문인데, 선행을 하기 원하는 사람들이 더러 있었기 때문입니다. 비록 이기적인 목적으로였지만 말입니다. 그러나 ‘그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획’이라는 표현을 통해 도착(倒錯, perversion), 왜곡(corruption)의 완성, 즉, 철저하게 부패하고, 변질되었음을 알 수 있습니다. Hence it appears that by “the evil of man on the earth” is signified his natural evil, which is of the will, and which is said to be “multiplied” because it was not so depraved in all but that they wished good for others, yet for the sake of themselves; but that the perversion became complete is signified by the “imagination of the thoughts of the heart.”

586. ‘그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐이다’가 상징하는 것은 진리와 선에 관한 퍼셉션(perception, 지각, 영적 통찰)이 전혀 존재하지 않았다는 것입니다. 전에 말씀드리고 보여드린 대로 (cf. AC.560, 570), 그 이유는, 그들이 신앙에 관한 가르침들로 하여금 그들의 아주 더러운 갈망(yearnings)에 잠기게 하였고, 이런 일이 벌어진 결과, 모든 퍼셉션은 사라졌으며, 그 자리를 대신 끔찍한 자기기만(persuasion), 즉, 가장 뿌리 깊고 치명적인 환상들이 차지한 것입니다. 이것이 그들을 질식시켜 멸망케 한 것입니다. The imagination of the thoughts of the heart was only evil every day signifies that there was no perception of truth and good, for the reason, as before said and shown, that they immersed the doctrinal things of faith in their filthy yearnings, and when this occurred all perception was lost, and in place thereof a dreadful persuasion succeeded, that is, a most deep-rooted and deadly fantasy, which was the cause of their extinction and suffocation.

이 끔찍한 자기기만, 죽음을 초래하는 신념이 바로 여기서 말씀하신 ‘마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획’, 곧 그들이 마음으로 생각하고 고안해낸 것이 상징하는 것입니다. ‘마음으로 하는 계획’, 곧 마음이 날조(fabricate), 조작하는 것이 ‘생각’, 사고(thoughts) 없이 언급될 때, 그것은 자기 사랑 혹은 갈망의 악, 곧 자기 사랑이나 욕망과 연결된 악을 상징합니다. 이것은 뒤에 나오는 장에서 노아가 번제를 드린 후, 여호와께서 하신 아래 말씀에 나옵니다. This deadly persuasion is here signified by “the imagination of the thoughts of the heart”; but by “the imagination of the heart,” without the word “thoughts,” is signified the evil of the love of self, or of yearnings, as in the following chapter, where Jehovah said, after Noah had offered a burnt offering: “I will not again curse the ground for man’s sake, because the imagination of the heart of man is evil from his childhood” (Gen. 8:21).

여호와께서 그 향기를 받으시고 그 중심에 이르시되 내가 다시는 사람으로 말미암아 땅을 저주하지 아니하리니 이는 사람의 마음이 계획하는 바가 어려서부터 악함이라 내가 전에 행한 것 같이 모든 생물을 다시 멸하지 아니하리니 (창8:21)

‘계획’(imagination), 곧 제작(fabrication)은, 사람이 자기를 위해 지어내는 것, 곧 자기 마음 안을 꾸미며, 자기가 참이라고 설득하는 것입니다. 하박국에 그 예가 있습니다. An “imagination” is that which man invents for himself, and of which he persuades himself; as in Habakkuk:

새긴 우상은 그 새겨 만든 자에게 무엇이 유익하겠느냐 부어 만든 우상은 거짓 스승이라 만든 자가 이 말하지 못하는 우상을 의지하니 무엇이 유익하겠느냐 What profiteth a graven image, that the fashioner thereof hath graven it, the molten image and teacher of lies, that the fashioner trusteth to his imagination, to make dumb idols? (합2:18)

‘새긴 우상’, 조각물은 사람이 속으로 품고 생각해낸 것들에 기반을 둔 거짓된 설득, 신념, 자기기만을 상징합니다. ‘새겨 만든 자’, 제작자는 자기-설득된 사람, 곧 위에서 설명한 ‘계획’으로 설득된 사람입니다. A “graven image” signifies false persuasions originating in principles conceived and hatched out by one’s self; the “fashioner” is one who is thus self-persuaded, of whom this “imagination” is predicated.

이사야입니다. In Isaiah:

너희의 패역함이 심하도다 토기장이를 어찌 진흙 같이 여기겠느냐 지음을 받은 물건이 어찌 자기를 지은 이에게 대하여 이르기를 그가 나를 짓지 아니하였다 하겠으며 빚음을 받은 물건이 자기를 빚은 이에게 대하여 이르기를 그가 총명이 없다 하겠느냐 O your perversity! Shall the potter be reputed as the clay, that the work should say to him that made it, He made me not; and the thing fashioned say to him that fashioned it, He had no understanding?; (사29:16)

여기 ‘빚음을 받은 물건’은 사람의 것에 기반한 사고와, 거짓과 거기서 나온 것에 의한 설득, 곧 자아중심적 사고와, 거짓을 참이라 하는, 거기서 나온 확신을 상징합니다. the “thing fashioned” here signifies thought originating in man’s own, and the persuasion of what is false thence derived.

‘빚음을 받은 물건’이나 ‘계획된’, 곧 제작(fabrication)이나 디자인은 일반적으로, 사람이 마음이나 의지로 고안한 것, 그리고 또 생각이나 신념(persuasion)으로 발명한 것입니다. 다윗의 글입니다. A “thing fashioned” or “imagined,” in general, is what a man invents from the heart or will, and also what he invents from the thought or persuasion, as in David:

이는 그가 우리의 체질을 아시며 우리가 단지 먼지뿐임을 기억하심이로다 Jehovah knoweth our fashioning [figmentum], he remembereth that we are dust. (시103:14)

모세의 글입니다. In Moses:

그들이 수많은 재앙과 환난을 당할 때에 그들의 자손이 부르기를 잊지 아니한 이 노래가 그들 앞에 증인처럼 되리라 나는 내가 맹세한 땅으로 그들을 인도하여 들이기 전 오늘 나는 그들이 생각하는 바를 아노라 I know his imagination that he doeth this day, before I bring him into the land. (신31:21)
