When such a persuasion takes possession of a man, it is like a glue which catches in its sticky embrace the goods and truths that otherwise would be remains, the result of which is that remains can no longer be stored up, and those which have been stored up can be of no use; and therefore when these people arrived at the summit of such persuasion they became extinct of their own accord, and were suffocated by an inundation not unlike a flood; and therefore their extinction is compared to a “flood,” and also, according to the custom of the most ancient people, is described as one.

(AC.1265-1272) The people before the flood were such that at last they had almost no remains, because they were of such a genius that they became imbued with direful and abominable persuasions concerning all things that occurred to them or came into their thought, so that they would not go back from them one whit, for they were possessed with the most enormous love of self, and supposed themselves to be as gods, and that whatever they thought was Divine. (AC.1265-1272) No such persuasion has ever existed in any people before or since, for it is deadly or suffocative, and therefore in the other life the antediluvians cannot be with any other spirits, for when they are present they take away from them all power of thought by injecting their fearfully determined persuasions, not to mention other matters which of the Lord’s Divine mercy shall be spoken of in what follows.

그러면 리메인스라는 것은 도대체 무엇입니까? 리메인스는 사람이 유년기부터 주님의 말씀을 통해 배워 그의 기억에 강한 인상을 심어준 선과 진리뿐 아니라, 거기서 기원한 모든 상태, 가령, 영유아기 순진무구한 상태, 부모, 형제, 선생님과 친구를 향한 사랑의 상태, 이웃을 향한 체어리티 및 가난한 자, 빈궁한 자를 불쌍히 여기는 상태 등, 한 마디로, 선과 진리에 속한 모든 상태 또한 가리킵니다. 선과 진리와 함께 기억에 각인된 이런 상태를 일컬어 리메인스라 합니다. 이것은 주님에 의해 사람 안에 보관되는데, 이때 주님은 사람으로 하여금 조금도 눈치 못 채게 조심조심 그의 속사람 안에 쌓아가십니다. 이것은 사람에게나 어울리는, 즉, 악과 거짓에 관련된 것들하고는 철저히 격리됩니다. 이 모든 상태는 그 가운데 아주 작은 것조차 잃는 것이 없도록 주님에 의해 사람 안에 보존됩니다. 저는 다음과 같은 사실을 알도록 전에 이런 경험을 했는데요, 사람의 모든 상태는 그의 영유아 때부터 아주 늙었을 때까지 내세에 그대로 보존될 뿐만 아니라 다시 체험되기도 한다는 것을 말입니다. 실제로 사람의 상태는 그가 현세에 살면서 처음 겪었던 상태 그대로 정확히 다시 체험됩니다. 우리 기억에 아로새겨진 선과 진리뿐 아니라, 우리가 경험한 모든 이노센스나 체어리티도 마찬가지, 즉, 하나도 잃는 것은 없습니다. 그리고 악과 거짓의 상태가 재발될 때, 곧, 이들 악과 거짓이 개별적이든 전체적이든, 심지어 아주 작은 것조차 역시 고스란히 남아 있고, 다시 체험되는데요, 이때는 주님에 의해 선한 상태로 누그러뜨려집니다. 이 모든 사실로 확실히 알 수 있는 것은, 사람에게 리메인스가 전혀 남아 있지 않게 되면, 그는 반드시 영원한 지옥살이, 곧, 영원히 지옥에 있게 될 것이라는 사실입니다. They are not only the goods and truths that a man has learned from the Lord’s Word from infancy, and has thus impressed on his memory, but they are also all the states thence derived, such as states of innocence from infancy; states of love toward parents, brothers, teachers, friends; states of charity toward the neighbor, and also of pity for the poor and needy; in a word, all states of good and truth. These states together with the goods and truths impressed on the memory, are called remains, which are preserved in man by the Lord and are stored up, entirely without his knowledge, in his internal man, and are completely separated from the things that are proper to man, that is, from evils and falsities. All these states are so preserved in man by the Lord that not the least of them is lost, as I have been given to know from the fact that every state of a man, from his infancy to extreme old age, not only remains in the other life, but also returns; in fact his states return exactly as they were while he lived in this world. Not only do the goods and truths of memory thus remain and return, but also all states of innocence and charity. And when states of evil and falsity recur—for each and all of these, even the smallest, also remain and return—then these states are tempered by the Lord by means of the good states. From all this it is evident that if a man had no remains he must necessarily be in eternal damnation. (See what was said before at n. 468.)

계속해서 진도를 나가기 전에 먼저, 홍수 이전 교회의 상황은 어땠는지를 좀 말씀드리는 게 좋을 것 같습니다. 일반적으로는, 후에 일어난 교회들의 상황들과 같았다 말씀드릴 수 있겠습니다. 즉, 주님 강림 전 유대교회의 경우나, 주님 강림 후 기독교회의 경우처럼, 참 신앙 지식의 부패와 타락, 뒤집힘 및 불순물을 섞음 등이 되어갔던 것입니다. 그러나 자세히는, 홍수 전 교회에 속한 사람의 경우, 그는 시간이 흐르면서 무서운 신념, 곧 소름 끼치는 망상을 품게 되었고, 신앙에 속한 선과 진리를 역겨운 갈망, 욕망에 철저히 잠기게 하여 그 결과, 그들 안에 리메인스가 거의 남아 있지 않을 지경까지 가도록 만들었습니다. 그들이 이 상태에 이르렀을 때, 그들은 사실은 스스로를 질식시킨 것입니다. 왜냐하면, 사람은 리메인스 없이는 살 수가 없기 때문입니다. 전에 말씀드린 것처럼(AC.530), 사람을 짐승 수준의 삶에서 인간의 삶으로 고양하는 것이 바로 이 리메인스이기 때문입니다. 리메인스를 가지고, 즉, 주님에게서 온 리메인스를 통해서, 사람은 사람이 될 수도, 무엇이 선이요, 진리인지를 알 수도, 온갖 종류의 일들을 생각할 수도, 그리고 결과적으로 이성적으로 사고할 수도 있는 것입니다. 리메인스 그 안에는 영적, 천적 생명이 있기 때문입니다. Before proceeding further we may mention how the case was with the church before the flood. Speaking generally, it was as with succeeding churches, as with the Jewish church before the Lord’s advent, and the Christian church after his advent, in that it had corrupted and adulterated the knowledges of true faith; but specifically, as regards the man of the church before the flood, he in course of time conceived direful persuasions, and immersed the goods and truths of faith in foul yearnings, insomuch that there were scarcely any remains in them. When they came into this state they were suffocated as if of themselves, for man cannot live without remains; for, as we have said, it is in the remains that the life of man is superior to that of brutes. From remains, that is, through remains from the Lord, man is able to be as man, to know what is good and true, to reflect upon matters of every kind, and consequently to think and to reason; for in remains alone is there spiritual and celestial life.

There were certain spirits who while living in the world had professed to believe in the Father; but of the Lord they had the same idea as of any other man, and therefore did not believe him to be the God of heaven. For this reason they were permitted to wander about and inquire wherever they wished whether there were any other heaven than the heaven of the Lord. They searched for several days, but nowhere found any. These were such as place the happiness of heaven in glory and dominion; and as they were unable to get what they desired, and were told that heaven does not consist in such things, they became indignant, and wished for a heaven where they could lord it over others and be eminent in glory like that in the world.

주께서 ‘하늘과 땅’이라고 하신 것은, 천국과 이 세상은 서로 의존관계에 있으므로 천국을 다스리시는 그분께서 지상도 다스리시기 때문이다.주15 ‘하늘과 땅을 다스리신다’는 것은, 사랑의 모든 것과 신앙의 모든 것, 따라서 모든 총명과 지혜, 즉 모든 행복, 한 마디로 영생이 주님께로부터 오는 것을 의미한다. 이것도 주께서 가르치신 것이다. He says “in heaven and on earth,” because he that rules heaven rules the earth also, for the one depends upon the other.15 “Ruling heaven and earth” means to receive from the Lord every good pertaining to love and every truth pertaining to faith, thus all intelligence and wisdom, and in consequence all happiness, in a word, eternal life. This also the Lord taught when he said:

아들을 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있고 아들에게 순종하지 아니하는 자는 영생을 보지 못하고 도리어 하나님의 진노가 그 위에 머물러 있느니라 (요3:36) He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that believeth not the Son shall not see life (John 3:36).

25예수께서 이르시되 나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 26무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐 (요11:25, 26) I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth on Me, though he die yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on Me shall never die (John 11:25, 26).

주15. 천국 전체가 주님의 것이다. The entire heaven is the Lord’s (n. 2751, 7086). 주님은 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 갖고 계신다. He has all power in the heavens and on the earths (n. 1607, 10089, 10827). 주님이 천국을 다스리시므로 주님은 또한 천국에 의존하는 모든 것, 곧 지상의 모든 것도 다스리신다. As the Lord rules heaven He rules also all things that depend thereon, thus all things in the world (n. 2026, 2027, 4523, 4524). 주님 홀로 지옥들로부터 떨어트리시고, 악에서 떠나 선 가운데 있게 하시며, 그렇게 해서 구원하시는 권세가 있으시다. The Lord alone has power to remove the hells, to withhold from evil and hold in good, and thus to save (n. 10019).

Infants, who form a third part of heaven, are all initiated into the acknowledgment and belief that the Lord is their Father, and afterwards that he is the Lord of all, thus the God of heaven and earth. That children grow up in heaven and are perfected by means of knowledges, even to angelic intelligence and wisdom, will be seen in the following pages.
