※ ‘팔백 년’, ‘구백삼십 세’의 속뜻, 숫자들은 그 교회의 여러 상태들에 대한 일종의 설명이나 평가. 이들 숫자들에는 오랜 시간 설명해야 하는 아르카나(arcana), 숨겨진 지혜(秘義)가 들어있다

4절, 아담은 셋을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며 And the days of man after he begat Seth were eight hundred years; and he begat sons and daughters.

‘날’(days)이 일반적으로 때와 상태를 의미한다는 것을 1장에서(AC.23) 보여드렸는데요, 거기에 나오는 창조의 ‘날’은 무슨 다른 걸 의미하지 않습니다. 말씀에서 ‘날’을 가지고 ‘항상’(all time, all units of time)을 표현하는 건 굉장히 자주 있는 일입니다. 본 구절과 이어지는 구절들(5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 27, 31절)을 보면 아주 분명한 것처럼 말입니다. 위 구절들을 보면, 각 구절마다 해당 시대들의 일반적 상태들(the states of the times) 역시 ‘날’을 가지고 표현하며, 여기에 ‘해’(years)까지 등장하면, 이 일련의 해(the seasons of the years), 곧 이 해로 표현된 기간(the time spans)을 통해서는 그 당시 상태들의 퀄러티(the qualities of the states, the nature of the states), 그러니까 특별한 상태들을 말하는 것입니다. That by “days” are signified times and states in general, was shown in the first chapter, where the “days” of creation have no other signification. In the Word it is very usual to call all time “days,” as is manifestly the case in the present verse, and in those which follow (5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 27, 31); and therefore the states of the times in general are likewise signified by “days”; and when “years” are added, then by the seasons of the years are signified the qualities of the states, thus states in special.

※ 예를 들어, 아담의 경우, ‘그는 구백삼십 세를 살고 죽었더라’(5절) 하고 있는데, 여기 나오는 ‘구백삼십’이라는 숫자는 실제 사람 나이가 아닌, 그 시대, 곧 ‘아담’이라는 태고교회의 상태라는 것입니다. 즉 천사들은 ‘구백삼십’이라는 숫자를 통해 ‘아, 태고교회는 저런 교회였구나!’ 한다는 것입니다. 우리의 눈으로는 단지 ‘구백삼십’이라는 겉 글자, 겉뜻, 숫자만 보일 뿐이지만, 천사들한테는 오히려 이런 숫자는 안 보이고, 대신 그 속에 담긴 속뜻, 곧 아르카나만 보이기 때문입니다.

태고인들은 자신들의 어떤 특별한 숫자들을 가지고 그걸로 그 교회와 관련된 여러 가지를 상징했습니다. 그 숫자들은 예를 들면, ‘삼’(3), ‘일곱’(7), ‘열’(10), ‘열둘’(12) 및 이들을 서로 섞어서 생성되는 많은 숫자들인데, 그들은 이 숫자들을 가지고 그 교회의 상태들을 요약, 설명했지요. 이런 이유로, 이들 숫자들에는 오랜 시간 설명해야 하는 아르카나(arcana), 숨겨진 지혜(秘義)가 들어있습니다. 숫자들은 그 교회의 여러 상태들에 대한 일종의 설명이나 평가였습니다. The most ancient people had their numbers, by which they signified various things relating to the church, as the numbers “three,” “seven,” “ten,” “twelve,” and many that were compounded of these and others, whereby they described the states of the church; wherefore these numbers contain arcana which would require much time to explain. It was an account or reckoning of the states of the church.

※ 즉, 숫자들은 해당 교회의 여러 상태들을 평가, 표현하는 어떤 방법이라는 것입니다. 천사들의 지혜는 우리의 지혜를 측량할 수 없을 만큼 초월, 예를 들면, 우리가 몇 시간을 말해야 하는 내용을 단 한 마디, 단 한 문장으로 전달한다고 하는데 아마 이 숫자 이야기가 바로 그런 것 중 하나인 것 같습니다.

같은 양상이 말씀 여러 군데서 발생하는데요, 특히 예언서입니다. 유대교회의 제의들(祭儀, rites)을 보면, 그 안에도 역시 ‘몇 번’(數, times) 및 ‘어느 정도의 양’(量, measures)이라는 두 종류의 숫자들이 있었습니다. 가령, 번제(燔祭, sacrifices), 소제(素祭, meat offerings), 봉헌물(oblations) 및 다른 것들과 관련되는 것들인데, 다들 그 드려짐에 따라 그곳의 거룩한 무언가를 상징하는 것입니다. 그래서 여기 ‘팔백’(800)이라는 숫자 및 다음 절에 나오는 ‘구백삼십’(930)이라는 숫자, 그리고 이어지는 구절들에 나오는 햇수들에 들어있는 것들, 즉 그들 고유의 일반적 상태에 적용된, 그들 교회 상태에 생긴 수많은 변화들은 일일이 나열하기엔 그 수가 너무 많습니다. 앞으로 다루게 될 부분에서, 주님의 신적 자비로 기회를 보아 숫자 ‘열둘’(12)까지 단순 숫자들이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 보여드릴 텐데요, 이 단순 숫자들의 의미를 알 수 있기 전까지는, 다른 그보다 더 큰 합성수들의 의미를 이해하는 것은 불가능할 겁니다. The same thing occurs in many parts of the Word, especially the prophetical. In the rites of the Jewish church also there were numbers, both of times and measures, as for instance in regard to the sacrifices, meat offerings, oblations, and other things, which everywhere signify holy things, according to their application. The things here involved, therefore, in the number “eight hundred,” and in the next verse, in the number “nine hundred and thirty,” and in the numbers of years in the verses following—namely, the changes of state of their church as applied to their own general state—are too many to be recounted. In a future part of this work, of the Lord’s Divine mercy we shall take occasion to show what the simple numbers up to “twelve” signify, for until the signification of these is known, it would be impossible to apprehend the signification of the compound numbers.
