‘그들이 먹을 수 있는 나무의 열매’(the fruit of the tree of which they might eat)가 태고교회로부터 그들에게 계시된 신앙의 선과 진리, 즉 신앙에 관한 지식들을 의미한다는 건 다음과 같은 사실, 곧 앞서 천적 인간, 곧 태고교회를 다룰 때처럼 ‘동산 나무’(the tree of the garden, 창2:16)라 하지 않고, 대신 ‘그들이 먹을 수 있는 동산 나무의 열매’(the fruit of the tree of the garden of which they might eat)라고 하고 있는 사실을 보면 분명합니다. That the “fruit of the tree of which they might eat” signifies the good and truth of faith revealed to them from the most ancient church, or the knowledges [cognitiones] of faith, is evident from the fact that it is said to be the “fruit of the tree of the garden of which they might eat,” and not the “tree of the garden,” as before when treating of the celestial man, or the most ancient church (Gen. 2:16).

※ 우리말 개역 개정에서는 위 창2:16 번역을 ‘동산 각종 나무의 열매’라 하여 원전에는 없는 ‘열매’를 첨가했습니다. 원전에는 ‘동산 각종 나무’인데요, ‘나무’가 퍼셉션(perception)을 의미한다는, 이런 속뜻을 알 길이 없었던 번역자들은 ‘나무를 먹는다고?’ 하면서 이 부분을 원전 그대로 번역하기가 굉장히 어색했을 것입니다.

 

위 창2:16 본문의 ‘동산 나무’(The tree of the garden)는 선하고 참된 것에 관한 퍼셉션입니다. 선과 진리는 퍼셉션을 통해 나오는, 즉 지각하는 것이기 때문에, 여기서 ‘열매’(fruit)라고 하는 것이며, 또한 말씀에서 자주 ‘열매’로 상징, 표상되는 것입니다. The “tree of the garden,” as it is there called, is the perception of what is good and true; which good and truth, because they are from that source, are here called “fruit,” and are also frequently signified by “fruit” in the Word.
