2-3절, 2여자가 뱀에게 말하되 동산 나무의 열매를 우리가 먹을 수 있으나 3동산 중앙에 있는 나무의 열매는 하나님의 말씀에 너희는 먹지도 말고 만지지도 말라 너희가 죽을까 하노라 하셨느니라 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the tree of the garden; But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

태고교회는, 천적 인간이었지요, ‘선악을 알게 하는 나무를 먹기’(eating of the tree of knowledge, 지식의 나무), 즉 신앙에 속한 것을 감각적인 것들과 기억-지식들(memory-knowledges)을 가지고 배우는 걸 삼가야 할 뿐 아니라, 그 나무를 만지는 거, 즉 신앙에 관한 문제를 감각적인 것들과 기억-지식들을 가지고 생각하는 게 허용조차 되지 않는 그런 캐릭터였습니다. 안 그러면, 그들은 천적 삶에서 영적 삶으로, 그리고 계속해서 그렇게 가라앉았기 때문입니다. 천적 천사들의 삶 또한 그런데요, 그들이 더욱 내적, 더욱 천적일수록, 그들은 신앙이라 이름하는 거라든지, 영적 성격을 띠는 무엇이든지 접해 보는 것 조차 일절 불허됩니다. 그리고 만일 이 신앙이라는 말을 남들을 통해서 듣게 되면, 신앙 대신 그들은 사랑에 관한 퍼셉션(perception)이 있는데요, 이게 어떻게 다른 건지는 오직 그들만 아는데, 그래서 신앙에 관한 무엇이든지 그들은 사랑과 체어리티(charity)로부터 출발하지요. 더더구나 그들은 신앙에 대해 이성을 가지고 이러니 저러니 하는 말 듣는 걸 굉장히 못 견뎌 하며, 무엇보다도 신앙 관련, 어떤 기억-지식을 가지고 그러는 걸 특히 힘들어 합니다. 왜냐하면, 사랑을 통해서, 그들은 주님으로 말미암는 선과 진리에 관한 퍼셉션이 있기 때문이며, 이 퍼셉션으로 그들은 어떤 것이 그런지 안 그런지를 즉시 알기 때문입니다. 그런 까닭에, 어떤 신앙에 관한 말을 듣게 되면, 그들은 그저 단순히 그렇다, 아니다로 대답하는데, 그들은 주님으로 말미암아 그걸 지각하기 때문입니다. 이것이 마태복음에서 하신 주님 말씀의 의미입니다. The most ancient church, which was a celestial man, was of such a character as not only to abstain from “eating of the tree of knowledge,” that is, from learning what belongs to faith from sensuous things and memory-knowledges, but was not even allowed to touch that tree, that is, to think of anything that is a matter of faith from sensuous things and memory-knowledges, lest they should sink down from celestial life into spiritual life, and so on downward. Such also is the life of the celestial angels, the more interiorly celestial of whom do not even suffer faith to be named, nor anything whatever that partakes of what is spiritual; and if it is spoken of by others, instead of faith they have a perception of love, with a difference known only to themselves; thus whatever is of faith they derive from love and charity. Still less can they endure listening to any reasoning about faith, and least of all to anything of memory-knowledge respecting it; for, through love, they have a perception from the Lord of what is good and true; and from this perception they know instantly whether a thing is so, or is not so. Therefore when anything is said about faith, they answer simply that it is so, or that it is not so, because they perceive it from the Lord. This is what is signified by the Lord’s words in Matthew:
오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라 (마5:37) Let your communication be Yea, yea; nay, nay; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. (Matt. 5:37)
그래서 이것이 그들로 하여금 지식의 나무 열매를 만지지 못하게 하셨다는 말의 의미입니다. 그들이 그걸 만지면, 그들은 악 가운데 있게, 즉 결과적으로 ‘죽게’(die) 되기 때문이지요. 그럼에도 불구하고, 천적 천사들은 다양한 주제에 관해 다른 천사들처럼 서로 대화합니다. 다만 천적 언어로 하는데, 이 언어는 사랑으로 되어 있고 사랑에서 나오며, 영적 천사들의 언어보다 더욱 형언할 수 없는 언어입니다. This then is what was meant by their not being allowed to touch the fruit of the tree of knowledge; for if they touched it, they would be in evil, that is, they would in consequence “die.” Nevertheless the celestial angels converse together on various subjects like the other angels, but in a celestial language, which is formed and derived from love, and is more ineffable than that of the spiritual angels.

※ 퍼셉션(perception) : 천사들에게 허용된 직관 능력, 어떤 것이 주님으로 말미암은 선과 진리인지를 본능적으로 아는. 인류는 지금까지 네 교회, 즉 태고교회(아담교회), 고대교회(노아교회), 표상교회(모세교회)가 있었고, 그리고 현 기독교회가 진행 중임. 각 교회 시대마다 그 시대의 최후의 심판과 종말, 곧 그 시대 교회의 종말이 있었음. 주님은 그럼에도 불구하고 인류가 계속해서 주님께 연결되어 존속할 수 있도록 하셨음. 인류가 주님께 연결되어 있도록 주님이 허용하신 첫 번째가 바로 이 '퍼셉션'임. 그러나 이 퍼셉션은 태고교회의 종말, 곧 '홍수'로 말미암아 닫히고, 이후 일어난 고대교회(노아교회) 때부터 인류에게 새로운, 즉 기존 퍼셉션을 대신할 새로운 연결 방법이 주님으로부터 허용되었는데, 그것이 바로 '양심'임
