4-5절, 4뱀이 여자에게 이르되 너희가 결코 죽지 아니하리라 5너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄 하나님이 아심이니라 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.

‘그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져’(Their eyes being opened by eating of the fruit of the tree)는 만일 그들이 신앙에 관한 것들을 무슨 감각과 지식에 관한 걸로, 즉 자신들이 가진 걸로 조사, 검사, 검토할 경우, 그들은 분명 그것들, 곧 그 신앙에 관한 것들을 잘못된 걸로, 틀린 걸로 볼 거라는 말입니다. 그리고 그들이 ‘하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄’(as God, knowing good and evil)은 만일 그들이 자신들을 기준 삼아 그런 짓을 하면, 그들은 마치 자신이 하나님인 양 스스로를 인도하려 할 것이라는, 즉 하나님의 인도를 구하는 대신 오직 자기 힘으로만 살아가려 할 것이라는 말입니다. Their “eyes being opened by eating of the fruit of the tree” signifies that if they were to examine the things of faith from what is of sense and knowledge [ex sensuali et scientifico], that is, from themselves, they would plainly see those things as if erroneous. And that they would be “as God, knowing good and evil,” denotes that if they did so from themselves, they would be as God, and could guide themselves.
