18절, 땅이 네게 가시덤불과 엉겅퀴를 낼 것이라 네가 먹을 것은 밭의 채소인즉 And the thorn and the thistle shall it bring forth unto thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.

‘가시덤불과 엉겅퀴’가 저주와 황폐함을 상징한다는 것은, 정 반대되는 것들, 곧 축복과 번성을 가리키는 추수와 과실 나무를 보면 분명합니다. ‘가시덤불’, ‘엉겅퀴’, ‘들장미’, ‘가시덩굴’ 및 ‘찔레’ 등이 그런 상징, 곧 저주와 황폐를 상징한다는 것은 말씀을 보면 분명한데요, 호세아입니다. That the “thorn and the thistle” signify curse and vastation, is evident from harvest and fruit tree denoting the opposites, which are blessings and multiplications. That the “thorn,” the “thistle,” the “brier,” the “bramble,” and the “nettle,” have such a signification, is evident from the Word, as in Hosea:
보라 그들이 멸망을 피하여 갈지라도 애굽은 그들을 모으고 놉은 그들을 장사하리니 그들의 은은 귀한 것이나 찔레가 덮을 것이요 그들의 장막 안에는 가시덩굴이 퍼지리라 (호9:6) Lo, they are gone away because of the vastation; Egypt shall gather them; Memphis shall bury them; their desirable things of silver, the nettle shall inherit them; the bramble shall be in their tents. (Hos. 9:6)
여기 ‘애굽’과 ‘놉’은 주님의 것들(Divine things)을 자신들과 자기들이 소유한 기억-지식들, 곧 세상 것들을 가지고 이해하고자 애쓰는, 그런 헛된 노력을 가리킵니다. 같은 예언서에서, Here “Egypt” and “Memphis” denote such as seek to understand Divine things from themselves and their own memory-knowledges. In the same prophet:
이스라엘의 죄 곧 아웬의 산당은 파괴되어 가시와 찔레가 그 제단 위에 날 것이니 그때에 그들이 산더러 우리를 가리라 할 것이요 작은 산더러 우리 위에 무너지라 하리라 (호10:8) The lofty places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed; the thorn and the thistle shall come up upon their altars, (Hos. 10:8)
여기 ‘아웬의 산당’은 자기 사랑을, ‘가시와 찔레가 그 제단 위에’는 신성모독(profanation)을 상징합니다. 이사야에서, where the “lofty places of Aven” signify the love of self; and the “thorn and thistle on the altars,” profanation. In Isaiah:
12그들은 좋은 밭으로 인하여 열매 많은 포도나무로 인하여 가슴을 치게 될 것이니라 13내 백성의 땅에 가시와 찔레가 나며 희락의 성읍, 기뻐하는 모든 집에 나리니 (사32:12–13) Mourning upon the paps for the fields of desire, for the fruitful vine; upon the ground of my people shall come up the briery thorn. (Isa. 32:12–13)
그리고 에스겔에서 And in Ezekiel:
이스라엘 족속에게는 그 사방에서 그들을 멸시하는 자 중에 찌르는 가시와 아프게 하는 가시가 다시는 없으리니 내가 주 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라 (겔28:24) There shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor a painful thorn from all that are round about them. (Ezek. 28:24)
