‘얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니’(eating bread in the sweat of the face)는 천적(天的)인 것을 싫어하게 되었음(to be averse to what is celestial)을, ‘취함을 입은 그 흙으로 돌아감’(to return to the ground from whence he was taken)은 겉 사람, 즉 거듭남 이전 상태로 돌아가는 것(to relapse into the external man, such as he was before regeneration)을, ‘너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라’(dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return)는 그가 정죄를 받고, 지옥과 같은 상태가 됨(he is condemned and infernal)을 말합니다.
