17절, 아담에게 이르시되 네가 네 아내의 말을 듣고 내가 네게 먹지 말라 한 나무의 열매를 먹었은즉 땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고 너는 네 평생에 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라 And unto the man he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in great sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

‘수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라’(to eat of the ground in great sorrow)가 상징하는 게 삶의 비참한 상태(a miserable state of life)임은 ‘먹는 것’(to eat)이 그 속뜻으로는 산다는 것(to live)이기 때문임은 말할 것도 없고, 앞뒤 내용들로도 분명한데요, 악한 영들(evil spirits)이 싸움을 시작하고, 수행, 수호 천사들(the attendant angels)은 애를 먹기 시작할 때, 그런 상태가 뒤따른다는 걸 보아도 분명합니다. 이런 삶의 상태는 악한 영들이 주도권을 잡기 시작할 때 더욱 비참해지는데요, 그때 악한 영들은 겉 사람을 장악, 다스리는데 반해 천사들은 단지 속 사람만 다스리는데, 속 사람 안에 리메인스가 거의 없어 그 사람을 방어, 보호하기 위해 꼭 필요한 것들을 조달할 수 없기 때문이며, 그 결과는 비참과 염려(misery and anxiety)의 일어남입니다. 죽은 사람들은 그런 비참과 염려에 좀처럼 예민하지 않습니다. 그들이 더 이상 사람이 아니기 때문인데요, 비록 그들이 자신들을 다른 누구보다도 더 그렇게, 즉 자신들을 사람으로 생각하더라도 말이지요. 그들은 더 이상 영적 천적인 것, 그리고 영원한 삶에 관해 짐승들보다도 더 아는 게 없는데, 이는 짐승들처럼 그 얼굴을 땅에 속한 것들을 향하거나 세속적인 것들을 향하기 때문입니다. 그들은 자신들의 오운(own)에만 호의적이며, 래셔널(the rational)의 완전한 동의 하에 자신들의 성향과 감각에 전적으로 올인합니다. 이들은 죽은 상태이기 때문에 아무런 영적 전투나 시험 없이 살아가고 있습니다. 자신들이 어떤 사람들인지가 다 드러나게 되면, 이들의 삶은 그 무게로 가라앉을 것이며, 그 결과, 점점 더 자신들을 저주, 재촉, 계속해서 더 깊이깊이 지옥의 저주 안으로 들어가게 될 것입니다. 이들은 다른 삶, 곧 지옥이지요, 거기서는 무슨 시험이나 불행 때문에 죽음에 이를 위험 같은 건 전혀 없지만, 대신 가장 극심한 고통을 겪어야 하는, 그런 삶의 입구에 이를 때까지 이들은 이런 삶을 계속 살게 되는데, 이런 똑같은 상태를 본문에서는, ‘땅은 저주를 받고 너는 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라’(cursed is the ground for thy sake; in great sorrow shalt thou eat of it)로 상징한 것입니다. That to “eat of the ground in great sorrow” signifies a miserable state of life is evident from what precedes and follows, not to mention that to “eat,” in the internal sense, is to live. The same is evident also from the fact that such a state of life ensues when evil spirits begin to fight, and the attendant angels to labor. This state of life becomes more miserable when evil spirits begin to obtain the dominion; for they then govern the external man, and the angels only the internal man, of which so little remains that they can scarcely take anything thence with which to defend the man; hence arise misery and anxiety. Dead men are seldom sensible of such misery and anxiety, because they are no longer men, although they think themselves more truly so than others; for they know no more than the brutes of what is spiritual and celestial, and what is eternal life, and like them they look downward to earthly things, or outward to worldly ones; they favor only their own, and indulge their inclinations and senses with the entire concurrence of the rational. Being dead, they sustain no spiritual combat or temptation, and were they exposed to it their life would sink under its weight, and they could thereby curse themselves still more, and precipitate themselves still more deeply into infernal damnation: hence they are spared this until their entrance into the other life, where, being no longer in danger of dying in consequence of any temptation or misery, they endure most grievous sufferings, which likewise are here signified by the ground being cursed, and eating of it in great sorrow.
