19절, 네가 흙으로 돌아갈 때까지 얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니 네가 그것에서 취함을 입었음이라 너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라 하시니라 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

‘얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니’(to eat bread in the sweat of the face)의 의미가 천적(天的)인 걸 싫어하는 것(to be averse to what is celestial)임은, ‘먹을 것’(bread)이 상징하는 걸 보면 분명한데요, ‘먹을 것’은 영적, 천적인 모든 것, 곧 천사들의 양식을 의미합니다. 만일 이것이 없으면, 즉 박탈되면 천사들은 삶을 영위할 수 없는 것이, 사람들의 경우도 마찬가지임을 보면 알 수 있지요. 이렇게 천국의 천적, 영적인 것이 지상의 ‘먹을 것’과 상응한다는 사실은 말씀 여러 구절에서 볼 수 있습니다. 주님은 '먹을 것', 곧 '떡'(bread)이신데요, 주님으로부터 천적, 영적인 모든 것이 나오기 때문임을 주님은 친히 요한복음에서 가르치고 계십니다. That to “eat bread in the sweat of the face” signifies to be averse to what is celestial is evident from the signification of “bread.” By “bread” is meant everything spiritual and celestial, which is the food of the angels, on the deprivation of which they would cease to live as certainly as men deprived of bread or food. That which is celestial and spiritual in heaven also corresponds to bread on earth, by which moreover they are represented, as is shown by many passages in the Word. That the Lord is “bread,” because from him proceeds whatever is celestial and spiritual, he himself teaches in John:

 

이것은 하늘에서 내려온 떡이니 조상들이 먹고도 죽은 그것과 같지 아니하여 이 떡을 먹는 자는 영원히 살리라 (요6:58) This is the bread that cometh down from heaven; he that eateth of this bread shall live to eternity. (John 6:58)

 

그래서 또한  빵과 포도주가 성찬(聖餐, the holy supper) 심볼들로 정해진 것이며, 만나 또한 이 천적인 것을 말하는 것입니다. 천사들의 양식이 천적, 영적인 것으로 되어 있다는 사실은 주님의 말씀으로부터, Wherefore also bread and wine are the symbols employed in the holy supper. This celestial is also represented by the manna. That what is celestial and spiritual constitutes the food of angels is manifest from the Lord’s words:

 

예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 기록되었으되 사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니요 하나님의 입으로부터 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이라 하였느니라 하시니 (마4:4) Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, (Matt. 4:4)

 

주님의 생명, 즉 모든 천적, 영적인 것이 주님의 생명으로부터 나오는 걸 볼 때 분명합니다. that is, from the life of the Lord, from which comes everything celestial and spiritual.

 

[2] 태고 교회의 마지막 후손이지요, 홍수 직전까지 존재했고, 지금 다루고 있는, 이들 후손은 신앙의 진리가 무엇인지, 주님은 어떤 분이신지, 혹은 주님이 오셔서 그들을 구원하실 것이라는 사실 등에 관해 더 이상 일체 귀 기울여 들으려고도 하지 않을 정도로 감각 및 육체의 일에 너무나도 철저히 잠겨 길을 잃었으며, 이런 주제들이 언급될 때면 고개를 돌려버리는, 그런 후손이었는데요, 이런 혐오를 ‘얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니’로 표현한 것입니다. 유대인들 또한 그랬는데요, 그들은 천적인 것들이 존재한다는 사실은 인정하지 않고, 대신 오직 세속적 메시아만을 원하는 그런 캐릭터들이 되어버린 결과, 만나를 보고 혐오를 느끼지 않을 수 없었던 것입니다. 만나는 주님에 대한 표상이었기 때문이었는데, 그들은 이것을 ‘하찮은 음식’(vile bread)이라고 했고, 이런 이유로, 불뱀이 그들 가운데 온 것입니다 (민21:5-6). 게다가 그들이 눈물 가운데 있을 때, 역경과 비참이라는 상태로 그들에게 전달된 천적인 것들을 가리켜 그들은 말하기를, ‘역경의 빵’, ‘비참의 빵’ 및 ‘눈물의 빵’이라 하였습니다. 현 본문에서는 혐오와 함께 받은 걸 ‘얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니’라는 말로 표현하고 있습니다. The last posterity of the most ancient church, which existed immediately before the flood, and is here treated of, had become so thoroughly lost and immersed in sensuous and bodily things, that they were no longer willing to hear what was the truth of faith, what the Lord was, or that he would come and save them; and when such subjects were mentioned they turned away. This aversion is described by “eating bread in the sweat of the face.” So also the Jews, in consequence of their being of such a character that they did not acknowledge the existence of heavenly things, and desired only a worldly messiah, could not help feeling an aversion for the manna, because it was a representation of the Lord, calling it “vile bread,” on which account fiery serpents were sent among them (Num. 21:5, 6). Moreover the heavenly things imparted to them in states of adversity and misery, when they were in tears, were called by them the “bread of adversity,” the “bread of misery,” and the “bread of tears.” In the passage before us, that which was received with aversion is called the “bread of the sweat of the face.”
