※ ‘셋’, ‘여호와의 이름을 부르기’의 속뜻

26절, 셋도 아들을 낳고 그의 이름을 에노스라 하였으며 그때에 사람들이 비로소 여호와의 이름을 불렀더라 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh: then began they to call upon the name of Jehovah.

‘셋’(Seth)은 신앙, 곧 이 신앙을 통해서 체어리티가 오는 그런 신앙임은 위에서 말씀드린 대로입니다. 그의 ‘아들’은 이름이 ‘에노스’(Enosh)였으며, 체어리티를 신앙의 원리로 삼았던 어떤 교회를, 그때 ‘여호와의 이름을 부르기’ 시작했다는 것은 그 교회의 예배가 체어리티로 드려졌음을 의미합니다. By “Seth” is signified the faith through which comes charity, as was said above; by his “son,” whose name was “Enosh,” is signified a church which regarded charity as the principal of faith; by beginning then to “call on the name of Jehovah” is signified the worship of that church from charity.

25절, 아담이 다시 자기 아내와 동침하매 그가 아들을 낳아 그의 이름을 셋이라 하였으니 이는 하나님이 내게 가인이 죽인 아벨 대신에 다른 씨를 주셨다 함이며 And the man knew his wife again, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth; for God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.

여기 ‘셋’이 새 신앙, 곧 체어리티가 나오는 신앙을 의미한다는 것은 그의 이름으로 설명이 되는데요, 이르시기를, ‘하나님이 내게 가인이 죽인 아벨 대신에 다른 씨를 주셨다’ 하신 이름이기 때문입니다. 하나님이 ‘다른 씨를 주셨다’는 것은 주께서 또 다른 신앙을 주신 것을 의미합니다. ‘다른 씨’는 체어리티를 낳는 신앙이기 때문입니다. ‘씨’가 신앙인 것은 위(cf. 255)에서 확인하실 수 있습니다. That “Seth” here signifies a new faith, through which comes charity, is explained by his name, which it is said was given him because God “appointed another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” That God “appointed another seed” means that the Lord gave another faith; for “another seed” is the faith through which comes charity. That “seed” signifies faith may be seen above (n. 255).

셋(Seth)이라 이름한 그녀의 ‘아들’이 새 신앙, 곧 체어리티를 얻게 될 새 신앙을 의미한다는 것은 앞서 서술해온 내용들 뿐 아니라, ‘가인에게 표를 주사 그를 만나는 모든 사람에게 죽임을 면하게 하시니라’ 하신 가인 관련 말씀(cf. 392)으로도 분명합니다. 이런 일련의 이야기를 정리하면 다음과 같습니다. ‘가인’으로는 사랑에서 분리된 신앙을, ‘아벨’로는 체어리티를, 그리고 아벨을 죽이는 가인으로는 분리된 상태의 신앙이 체어리티를 소멸케 함을 나타냈습니다. ‘가인에게 표를 주사 그를 만나는 모든 사람에게 죽임을 면하게 하시니라’로는 신앙을 보존, 그렇게 해서 체어리티를 심고자 하시는 주님의 의도를 나타냈습니다. That by her “son,” whom she named Seth, is signified a new faith, by which charity may be attained, is evident from what has been previously stated, as well as from its being related of Cain that a “mark was set upon him, lest anyone should slay him.” For the subject as it stands in a series is as follows: Faith separated from love was signified by “Cain”; charity, by “Abel”; and that faith in its separated state extinguished charity was signified by Cain slaying Abel. The preservation of faith in order that charity might be thereby implanted by the Lord was signified by Jehovah’s setting a mark on Cain lest anyone should slay him.

그 후에 거룩한 사랑(the holy of love)과 그로 말미암은 선(the good thence derived)이 주님에 의해 신앙을 통해 주어지는데 이걸 아다가 낳은 야발로, 그리고 신앙의 영적인 것(the spiritual of faith)을 그의 아우 유발로, 그리고 이들로 말미암은 자연적 선과 진리(natural good and truth)를 씰라가 낳은 두발가인으로 나타냈습니다. 창세기 4장의 이들 두 구절에서 우리는 이 모든 것의 결론 및 요약을 다음과 같이 내릴 수 있는데요, 그것은, ‘아담과 그의 아내’는 전에 아다와 씰라로 불린 새 교회를, ‘셋’은 체어리티가 심기는 신앙을, 다음 이어지는 구절의 ‘에노스’는 신앙을 통해 심긴 체어리티를 의미한다는 것입니다. That afterwards the holy of love and the good thence derived were given by the Lord through faith was signified by Jabal whom Adah bare; and that the spiritual of faith was given, was signified by his brother Jubal; and that from these there came natural good and truth was signified by Tubal-Cain whom Zillah bare. In these two concluding verses of Genesis 4 we have the conclusion, and thus the summary, of all these matters, to this effect, that by the “man and his wife” is signified that new church which before was called Adah and Zillah, and that by “Seth” is signified the faith through which charity is implanted; and in the verse which now follows, by “Enosh” is signified the charity that is implanted through faith.
