‘뱀’의 속뜻이 일반적으로는 모든 악, 구체적으로는 자기 사랑(the love of self)인 이유는, 모든 악이 마음의 감각 파트로부터, 그리고 또 처음에 ‘뱀’으로 상징된, 그리고 여기서 모든 종류의 악, 특별히 자기 사랑, 혹은 같은 거지만, 이웃과 주님을 향한 증오를 가리키는 기억-지식으로부터 일어난다는 사실 때문입니다. 이 악이나 증오는 다양하며, 수많은 속(屬, genera)과 더욱 수많은 종(種, species)으로 구성되기 때문에, 말씀에서는 다양한 종류의 뱀으로 묘사되고 있습니다. 예를 들면, ‘뱀’(snakes, 마23:33), ‘독사’(cockatrices, 렘8:17), ‘독사’(asps, 신32:33), ‘독사’(adders, 시140:3), ‘불뱀’(fiery serpents, 민21:6), ‘날으는 뱀’(serpents that fly), 그리고 ‘기는 뱀’(serpents that creep) 및 ‘독사’(vipers, 마23:33)인데요, 독, 곧 증오 차이에 따른 겁니다. 그래서 이사야에 보면은, The reason why the “serpent” means all evil in general, and specifically the love of self, is that all evil has had its rise from that sensuous part of the mind and also from that memory-knowledge which at first were signified by the “serpent”; and therefore it here denotes evil of every kind, and specifically the love of self, or hatred against the neighbor and the Lord, which is the same thing. As this evil or hatred was various, consisting of numerous genera and still more numerous species, it is described in the Word by various kinds of serpents, as “snakes,” “cockatrices,” “asps,” “adders,” “fiery serpents,” “serpents that fly” and “that creep,” and “vipers,” according to the differences of the poison, which is hatred. Thus we read in Isaiah:

블레셋 온 땅이여 너를 치던 막대기가 부러졌다고 기뻐하지 말라 뱀의 뿌리에서는 독사가 나겠고 그의 열매는 날아다니는 불뱀이 되리라 (사14:29) Rejoice not thou, whole Philistia, because the rod which smiteth thee is broken, for out of the serpent’s root shall go forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a flying fire serpent. (Isa. 14:29)

‘뱀의 뿌리’(The serpent’s root)는 감각과 기억-지식에 연결된 마음의 해당 파트나 원리를, '독사'(the cockatrice)는 악과 거기서 유래된 거짓을, ‘날아다니는 불뱀’(the flying fire serpent)은 자아 사랑에서 나오는 탐욕을 의미합니다. 유사한 내용이 같은 선지서 또 다른 곳에도 나옵니다. The “serpent’s root” denotes that part of the mind, or that principle, which is connected with the senses and with memory-knowledge; the “cockatrice” denotes evil originating in the falsity thence derived; and the “flying fire serpent,” the cupidity that comes from the love of self. By the same prophet also similar things are elsewhere thus described:

독사의 알을 품으며 거미줄을 짜나니 그 알을 먹는 자는 죽을 것이요 그 알이 밟힌즉 터져서 독사가 나올 것이니라 (사59:5) They hatch cockatrice’s eggs, and weave the spider’s web; he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and when it is crushed there cometh out a viper. (Isa. 59:5)

여기 창세기에 나오는 뱀을 계시록에서는 ‘큰 붉은 용’(the great and red dragon), ‘옛 뱀’(the old serpent), ‘마귀, 사탄’(the devil and satan), ‘온 천하를 꾀는 자’(deceives the whole world)(12:3, 9; 20:2)라 하고 있는데요, 또 다른 구절들에서도 마찬가지지만, 여기 나오는 ‘마귀’는 그 무슨 우두머리 노릇을 하는 특별한 마귀를 말하는 게 아니라, 악한 영들의 무리 전체를, 그리고 악 그 자체를 의미하는 것입니다. The serpent described here in Genesis is called in the Revelation the “great and red dragon,” and the “old serpent,” and also the “devil and satan,” that “deceives the whole world” (12:3, 9; 20:2), where, and also in other places, by the “devil” is not meant any particular devil who is prince over the others, but the whole crew of evil spirits, and evil itself.

하늘에 또 다른 이적이 보이니 보라 한 큰 붉은 용이 있어 머리가 일곱이요 뿔이 열이라 그 여러 머리에 일곱 왕관이 있는데 (계12:3)

큰 용이 내쫓기니 옛 뱀 곧 마귀라고도 하고 사탄이라고도 하며 온 천하를 꾀는 자라 그가 땅으로 내쫓기니 그의 사자들도 그와 함께 내쫓기니라 (계12:9)

Everyone is aware that this is the first prophecy of the Lord’s advent into the world; it appears indeed clearly from the words themselves, and therefore from them and from the prophets even the Jews knew that a messiah was to come. Hitherto however no one has understood what is specifically meant by the “serpent,” the “woman,” the “serpent’s seed,” the “woman’s seed,” the “head of the serpent which was to be trodden upon,” and the “heel which the serpent should bruise.” They must therefore be explained. By the “serpent” is here meant all evil in general, and specifically the love of self; by the “woman” is meant the church; by the “seed of the serpent,” all infidelity; by the “seed of the woman,” faith in the Lord; by “he,” the Lord himself; by the “head of the serpent,” the dominion of evil in general, and specifically that of the love of self; by to “trample upon,” depression, so that it should “go upon the belly and eat dust”; and by the “heel,” the lowest natural (as the corporeal), which the serpent should “bruise.”

14절, 여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되 네가 이렇게 하였으니 네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아 배로 다니고 살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라 And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above every beast, and above every wild animal of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

‘살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라’(to eat dust all the days of its life)의 속뜻은 그들의 감각 파트는 몸과 땅의 걸로만 살아가게 되었다, 즉 지옥같은 그런 삶이 되었다는 말인데요, 이는 말씀에서 ‘흙’(dust)이 상징하는 걸 보면 분명합니다. 미가서입니다. That to “eat dust all the days of its life” signifies that their sensuous part became such that it could not live from anything except that which is of the body and the earth, that is to say, that it became infernal, is evident also from the signification of “dust” in the Word; as in Micah:

14원하건대 주는 주의 지팡이로 주의 백성 곧 갈멜 속 삼림에 홀로 거주하는 주의 기업의 양 떼를 먹이시되 그들을 옛날같이 바산과 길르앗에서 먹이시옵소서 16이르되 여러 나라가 보고 자기의 세력을 부끄러워하여 손으로 그 입을 막을 것이요 귀는 막힐 것이며 17그들이 뱀처럼 티끌을 핥으며 땅에 기는 벌레처럼 떨며 그 좁은 구멍에서 나와서 두려워하며 우리 하나님 여호와께로 돌아와서 주로 말미암아 두려워하리이다 (미7:14, 16-17) Feed thy people as in the days of eternity. The nations shall see and shall blush at all their might; they shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall be shaken out of their holds like creeping things [serpentes] of the earth. (Micah 7:14, 16–17)

‘옛날같이’(The days of eternity)는 태고교회를 의미하며, ‘여러 나라’(the nations)는, 자신들의 오운(own)을 신뢰하는 자들인데, ‘그들이 뱀처럼 티끌을 핥으며’라고 서술되고 있는 사람들입니다. The “days of eternity” mean the most ancient church; the “nations,” those who trust in their own, of whom it is predicated that “they shall lick the dust like a serpent.”

시편에도 In David:

광야에 사는 자는 그 앞에 굽히며 그의 원수들은 티끌을 핥을 것이며 (시72:9) Barbarians shall bow themselves before God, and his enemies shall lick the dust. (Ps. 72:9)

‘광야에 사는 자’(Barbarians)와 ‘원수들’(enemies)은 오직 땅과 세속적인 것들만 생각하는 사람들입니다. 이사야입니다. “Barbarians” and “enemies” are those who regard only earthly and worldly things. In Isaiah:

이리와 어린 양이 함께 먹을 것이며 사자가 소처럼 짚을 먹을 것이며 뱀은 흙을 양식으로 삼을 것이니 나의 성산에서는 해함도 없겠고 상함도 없으리라 여호와께서 말씀하시니라 (사65:25) Dust shall be the serpent’s bread. (Isa. 65:25)

‘흙’(dust, 아래 마10:14에서는 먼지로 번역)이 영적, 천적인 것들은 생각하지 않고, 대신 오로지 육적이고 땅에 속한 것만 생각하는 사람들을 의미하기 때문에, 주님은 제자들에게 명하시기를,

누구든지 너희를 영접하지도 아니하고 너희 말을 듣지도 아니하거든 그 집이나 성에서 나가 너희 발의 먼지를 떨어 버리라 (마10:14)

하신 것입니다. As “dust” signifies those who do not regard spiritual and celestial things, but only what is corporeal and earthly, therefore the Lord enjoined his disciples that if the city or house into which they entered was not worthy, they should “shake off the dust of their feet” (Matt. 10:14).
