17. 2절, 땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고 하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시니라 Verse 2. And the earth was a void and emptiness, and darkness was upon the faces of the deep [abyssi]; and the spirit of God was brooding upon the faces of the waters.

거듭남 이전 상태의 사람을 가리켜 ‘땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며’라 하였습니다. 여기서 ‘땅’은 선과 진리의 씨 심긴 적이 한 번도 없는 사람의 마음을, ‘혼돈’은 그 땅에 선이 전혀 없음을, ‘공허’는 진리가 전혀 없음을 각각 가리킵니다. Before his regeneration, man is called the “earth void and empty,” and also the “ground” wherein nothing of good and truth has been sown; “void” denotes where there is nothing of good, and “empty” where there is nothing of truth.

그래서 그 결과, 이런 사람은 필연적으로 ‘흑암’의 상태, 곧 주님 신앙에 속한 모든 것과 영적, 천국적(heavenly) 삶에 속한 모든 것에 매우 어리석고 무지한 심각한 상태가 되고 마는 것입니다. Hence comes “thick darkness,” that is, stupidity, and an ignorance of all things belonging to faith in the Lord, and consequently of all things belonging to spiritual and heavenly life.

주님은 이런 사람을 가리켜 예레미야에서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. Such a man is thus described by the Lord through Jeremiah:

내 백성은 나를 알지 못하는 어리석은 자요 지각이 없는 미련한 자식이라 악을 행하기에는 지각이 있으나 선을 행하기에는 무지하도다 보라 내가 땅을 본즉 혼돈하고 공허하며 하늘에는 빛이 없으며 (렘4:22-23) My people is stupid, they have not known me; they are foolish sons, and are not intelligent; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. I beheld the earth, and lo a void and emptiness, and the heavens, and they had no light. (Jer. 4:22–23)

18. ‘깊은 위에 있고’는 거듭나지 않은 사람의 탐욕과 거기서 비롯되는 거짓을 말합니다. 거듭나지 않은 사람은 전적으로 이런 상태이며, 그 가운데 완전히 잠겨 있습니다. The “faces of the deep” are the cupidities of the unregenerate man, and the falsities thence originating, of which he wholly consists, and in which he is totally immersed.

이 상태에서는 빛이라는 게 전혀 없기 때문에, 그래서 ‘깊다’, 뭔가 모호하고 혼란스럽다 하는 것입니다. In this state, having no light, he is like a “deep,” or something obscure and confused.

이런 사람들을 가리켜 말씀 여러 곳에서는 ‘깊음들’, ‘바다 깊은 곳들’이라 하셨는데, 그것은 사람에게 거듭남이 시작되면서 바짝 ‘마르게 될’, ‘소진될’ 것입니다. Such persons are also called “deeps,” and “depths of the sea,” in many parts of the Word, which are “dried up,” or “wasted,” before man is regenerated.

이사야에서처럼 말입니다. As in Isaiah:

옛날 옛 시대에 깨신 것 같이 하소서 라합을 저미시고 용을 찌르신 이가 어찌 주가 아니시며 바다를, 넓고 깊은 물을 말리시고 바다 깊은 곳에 길을 내어 구속받은 자들을 건너게 하신 이가 어찌 주가 아니시니이까 여호와께 구속받은 자들이 돌아와 (사51:9-11) Awake as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art not thou it that drieth up the sea, the waters of the great deep, that maketh the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? Therefore the redeemed of Jehovah shall return. (Isa. 51:9–11)

이런 사람은 또 천국에서 보면 마치 까만 덩어리처럼, 활기라고는 하나도 없는, 아주 극심한 궁핍 덩어리로 보입니다. Such a man also, when seen from heaven, appears like a black mass, destitute of vitality.

마찬가지로 보통은 같은 표현을 써서 사람의 황폐함을 나타내는데요, 선지자들이 자주 그랬습니다. 이런 안타까운 상태는 주님의 자비로 다음 단계인 거듭남을 향해 나아갑니다. 사람은 거듭남이 시작되면 진리라는 게 무엇인지를 알게 되며, 선이라는 것을 통해 마음에 감동이 시작되는데요, 그런데 이때 먼저 반드시 선행되어야 하는 한 가지가 있습니다. 바로 자기 안에 이런 일이 일어나는 것을 싫어하고 반발하는 일체의 요소들을 잠재우는 것입니다. 즉, 옛사람이 죽어야 하는 것이지요. 새사람이 그 안에 잉태되려면 반드시 이런 일이 먼저 일어나야 합니다. The same expressions likewise in general involve the vastation of man, frequently spoken of by the prophets, which precedes regeneration; for before man can know what is true, and be affected with what is good, there must be a removal of such things as hinder and resist their admission; thus the old man must needs die, before the new man can be conceived.

19. ‘하나님의 영’, 이 표현은 주님의 자비를 가리키는 표현인데요, 이를 가리켜 ‘운행하시니라’, ‘품으시니라’ 하신 것입니다. 마치 암닭이 알을 품에 품는 것처럼 말입니다. By the “spirit of God” is meant the Lord’s mercy, which is said to “move,” or “brood,” as a hen broods over her eggs.

그렇다면 하나님의 영이 그 위에 운행하시는 ‘수면 위’라는 것은 과연 무엇일까요? 그것은 주님이 사람 안에 숨기시고 보물처럼 소중히 여기시며 보관하여 오신 것들인데요, 말씀 전체를 통하여, 이것을 가리켜 ‘리메인스’(remains), 혹은 ‘남은 자’(a remnant)라고 하신 것입니다. 이것은 선과 진리에 관한 지식으로 이루어지며, 외적인 일들, 겉의 일들이 황폐해질 때까지, 결코 빛으로, 낮으로 드러나지 않는 그런 것입니다. The things over which it moves are such as the Lord has hidden and treasured up in man, which in the Word throughout are called remains or a remnant, consisting of the knowledges of the true and of the good, which never come into light or day, until external things are vastated.

이 지식을 가리켜 여기서 ‘수면 위’라 하신 것입니다. These knowledges are here called “the faces of the waters.”
