21. 4, 5절, 빛이 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라 하나님이 빛과 어둠을 나누사 하나님이 빛을 낮이라 부르시고 어둠을 밤이라 부르시니라 Verses 4, 5. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God distinguished between the light and the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness he called night.

빛을 일컬어, ‘좋았더라’, 곧, ‘선’(good)이라 합니다. 이 빛이 주님으로 말미암기 때문인데, 주님은 선 그 자체이신 분이기 때문입니다. Light is called “good,” because it is from the Lord, who is good itself.

‘어둠’은 그동안 빛인 줄 알았던 모든 걸 의미합니다. 사람에게 거듭남이 시작되기 전까지는 말이지요. 그동안 악은 선인 것처럼, 거짓은 진리인 것처럼 행세해 왔습니다만, 이제 보니 그것들은 그저 어둠일 뿐이었던 것입니다. 그것들은 그저 사람에게나 어울리는 그런 것들이었고, 여전히 남아 있는 어둠일 뿐입니다. The “darkness” means all those things which, before man is conceived and born anew, have appeared like light, because evil has appeared like good, and the false like the true; yet they are darkness, consisting merely of the things proper to man himself, which still remain.

※ 사람은 자기가 이해하고 그에 따라 생각하는 모든 것을 진리로 여기며, 또 자기가 의도하고 그에 따라 생각하는 모든 것을 선으로 여기기 때문입니다.

어떤 일이든 그것이 주님께 속한 것이면, 그것은 ‘낮’으로 비교됩니다. 낮은 빛에 속하기 때문입니다. 어떤 일이든 그것이 사람의 본성에 속한 것이면, 그것은 ‘밤’으로 비교됩니다. 밤은 어둠에 속하기 때문입니다. Whatsoever is of the Lord is compared to “day,” because it is of the light; and whatsoever is man’s own is compared to “night,” because it is of darkness.

이런 비교, 이런 대비가 말씀에는 아주 자주 나옵니다. These comparisons frequently occur in the Word.
