※ 거듭 말씀드리지만, 이 햇수들은 어떤 개인의 수명을 가리키는 게 아니라 해당 교회의 때와 상태들을 상징합니다.

19-20절, 19에녹을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며 20그는 구백육십이 세를 살고 죽었더라 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years; and he died.

이들 말씀들의 상징들 또한 위 비슷한 말씀들의 것들과 유사합니다. 야렛이 구백육십이 세를 살았다, 므두셀라는 구백육십구 세를 살았다 하여 대홍수 이전 사람들이 실제로 이렇게 엄청나게 오래 살았었다는 것은 아니라는 사실을 모두가 알아야 하며, 이 사실은 다음 장 3절, ‘그들의 날은 백이십 년이 되리라’(창6:3)라는 말씀을 통해 특별히 주님의 신적 자비로 모두에게 말씀드리겠습니다. 거듭 말씀드리지만, 이 햇수들은 어떤 개인의 수명을 가리키는 게 아니라 해당 교회의 때와 상태들을 상징합니다. The signification of these words also is similar to that of the like words above. That the ages of the antediluvians were not so great, as that of Jared nine hundred and sixty-two years, and that of Methuselah nine hundred and sixty-nine years, must appear to everyone, especially from what of the Lord’s Divine mercy will be said at verse 3 of the next chapter, where we read, “Their days shall be a hundred and twenty years”; so that the number of the years does not signify the age of any particular man, but the times and states of the church.

‘야렛’이라는 교회에 관해서는 아무것도 알려진 게 없습니다. 그러나 그 교회가 대략 어떠했으리라는 것은 그 앞 교회였던 ‘마할랄렐’과, 그 뒤 교회인 ‘에녹’을 보면 알 수 있습니다. 이 교회는 그 둘 사이에 있었기 때문입니다. Concerning the church called “Jared” nothing is related; but its character may be known from the church “Mahalalel” which preceded it, and the church “Enoch” which followed it, between which two it was intermediate.

‘야렛’은 앞서 말씀드린 대로, 여섯 번째 교회를, ‘에녹’은 일곱 번째 교회를 상징합니다. By “Jared,” as before said, is signified a sixth church; by “Enoch” a seventh.

16-17절, 16야렛을 낳은 후 팔백삼십 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며 And Mahalalel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters. 17그는 팔백구십오 세를 살고 죽었더라 And all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years; and he died.

이 표현들은 앞의 비슷한 표현들과 같은 의미입니다. It is the same with these words as with the like words before.

※ 팔백구십오(895)라는 숫자가 문자 그대로 실제로 895년을 뜻하는 게 아닌, 어떤 긴 시간의 흐름, 혹은 상태와 그 상태의 변화를 의미하는 것이라 하더라도 분명한 사실은, 주님은 게난에 이어 마할랄렐로 이어지는, 점점 더 안 좋은 쪽으로 기울어지는 시대의 흐름을 그대로 허용하고 계신다는 것입니다. 편의상, 구백 년으로 보면, 실제로는 그 이상이었겠지만, 거의 천년의 세월 동안 수많은 인물과 사건, 사상의 부침이 있었을 텐데도, 노아의 홍수라는 종말을 향해 유유히 흘러가는 그 장강, 대하의 물결을 주님은 의도적으로 간섭하시거나 개입하셔서 강제로 돌리지 않으십니다.

※ ‘마할랄렐’ 교회를 구성하던 사람들의 생명은 다음과 같았는데, 그들은 진리 기뻐하기를 그 진리의 사용, 곧 그 진리를 실천했을 때 맛보는 기쁨보다 더 좋아하던 그런 사람들이었다

이들 교회들의 퍼셉션 역량은 감소하였고, 그래서 갈수록 더욱 특별해지거나 분명해지기는커녕 오히려 더 평범해지거나 흐릿해져 버렸는데, 그런 식으로 이들 교회들의 사랑이나 쓰임새의 생명 또한 그렇게 되었습니다. 사랑의 생명, 쓰임새의 생명은 소유한 퍼셉션 역량이기 때문입니다. 선에서 진리를 아는 것이 천적(天的, celestial)입니다. ‘마할랄렐’이라 하는 교회를 구성하던 사람들의 생명은 다음과 같았는데, 그들은 진리 기뻐하기를 그 진리의 사용, 곧 그 진리를 실천했을 때 맛보는 기쁨보다 더 좋아하던 그런 사람들이었다는 사실입니다. 이런 사실은 제가 영계에서 마할랄렐 때 사람들을 경험함으로써 알게 되었습니다. As the perceptive faculty decreased, and from being more particular or distinct, became more general or obscure, so also did the life of love or of uses; for as is the life of love or of uses, so is the perceptive faculty. From good to know truth is celestial; the life of those who constituted the church called “Mahalalel” was such that they preferred the delight from truths to the delight from uses, as has been given me to know by experience among their like in the other life.
