There Is a Correspondence of Heaven with All Things of the Earth

내가 천국에서 알게 된 것은, 지구 최초의 사람들은 천적인 사람들이었으며, 상응 자체로 생각했고, 눈에 보이는 세상의 자연적인 것은 상응에 따라 생각하기 위한 수단으로 삼았다는 것이다. 그런 특성 때문에 그들은 천사와 교류하고 대화했고, 따라서 그들을 통해 천국은 세상과 결합되었다. 이런 까닭에 그 시대를 황금(黃金) 시대(the Golden Age)라고 불렀으며, 수많은 고대 문인들이 ‘그때는 하늘에 사는 이들이 사람과 함께 지냈고, 친구처럼 서로 사귀었다’고 기록한 것이다. 그러나 이들의 시대가 끝나고, 그 뒤를 이은 사람들은 상응 자체를 가지고 생각하지 않고, 상응에 관한 지식에 의해 생각했다. 이 시대에도 천국과 세상이 결합은 되어 있었지만, 그리 직접적이지 못했다. 이 시기를 은(銀) 시대(the Silver Age)라고 한다. 그 후대 사람들은 상응 지식은 어느 정도 있었으나 그 지식에 의해 생각하지는 않았다. 고대 사람들은 영적 선 안에 있었지만, 이들은 자연적 선 안에 있었기 때문이다. 이 시대를 동(銅) 시대(the Copper Age)라고 부른다. 그 후 사람은 점차 외면적이 되어가다가 끝내 육체적(corporeal)이 되어 상응에 관한 지식은 완전히 사라졌고, 그와 함께 천국에 대한 참된 개념을 잊어버리고 말았다. 위의 시대들을 금, 은, 동으로 이름한 것도 상응에 따른 것이다.주86 상응에 의하면, 금은 태고인들이 지녔던 것과 같은 천적 선을, 은은 그 다음 고대인들이 지녔던 영적 선을, 구리는 그 후예들의 자연적 선을 의미하기 때문이다. 철은 가장 나중 시대에 붙여진 이름이며, 선에서 떠난 진리를 의미한다. I have been taught from heaven that the most ancient men on our earth, who were celestial men, thought from correspondences themselves, the natural things of the world before their eyes serving them as means of thinking in this way; and that they could be in fellowship with angels and talk with them because they so thought, and that thus through them heaven was conjoined to the world. For this reason that period was called the Golden Age, of which it is said by ancient writers that the inhabitants of heaven dwelt with men and associated with them as friends with friends. But after this there followed a period when men thought, not from correspondences themselves, but from a knowledge of correspondences, and there was then also a conjunction of heaven with man, but less intimate. This period was called the Silver Age. After this there followed men who had a knowledge of correspondences but did not think from that knowledge, because they were in natural good, and not, like those before them, in spiritual good. This period was called the Copper Age. After this man gradually became external, and finally corporeal, and then the knowledge of correspondences was wholly lost, and with it a knowledge of heaven and of the many things pertaining to heaven. It was from correspondence that these ages were named from gold, silver, and copper,86 and for the reason that from correspondence gold signifies celestial good in which were the most ancient people, silver spiritual good in which were the ancient people that followed, and copper natural good in which were the next posterity; while iron, from which the last age takes its name, signifies hard truth apart from good.

Iron signifies truth in the outmost of order (n. 425, 426).
