※ ‘아담과 그의 아내’의 속뜻, 위 아다와 씰라가 의미하는 새 교회

25절, 아담이 다시 자기 아내와 동침하매 그가 아들을 낳아 그의 이름을 셋이라 하였으니 이는 하나님이 내게 가인이 죽인 아벨 대신에 다른 씨를 주셨다 함이며 And the man knew his wife again, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth; for God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.

‘아담’과 그의 ‘아내’가 위 아다와 씰라가 의미하는 새 교회를 뜻한다는 사실은 겉뜻으로는 아무도 알 수도, 이해할 수도 없었습니다. ‘아담과 그의 아내’가 이전까지는 태고교회와 그 후손을 의미했기 때문인데요, 그러나 이런 사실이 그 속뜻과, 뿐만 아니라 다음과 같은 사실로는 너무나도 분명한 것이, 바로 이어지는 장인 5장 1절로 4절에, 아담과 그의 아내, 그리고 그들이 낳은 셋이 다시 언급되는데, 여기서는 오늘 본문과 전혀 다른 말로 언급되며, 이 경우는 태고교회의 첫 번째 후손을 의미한다는 사실입니다. 지금 보고 있는 이 구절에, 이것 말고 다른 아무 의미도 없다면, 여기서 굳이 같은 걸 말할 필요가 하나도 없을 것입니다. 비슷한 예를 하나 들면, 1장에서 보면 거기 사람, 땅의 열매들, 그리고 짐승들의 창조를 다루더니, 얼핏 보면 같은 내용을 2장에서 또 다룹니다. 그 이유는 이미 말씀드렸지만, 1장에서는 영적 인간의 창조를, 반면 2장에서는 천적 인간의 창조를 다루기 때문입니다. 하나를 언급하고 다른 데서 또 같은 사람이나 사물을 언급하는 이런 반복이 있는 곳마다 항상 어떤 다른 의미가 있습니다. 그러나 그것이 무엇을 의미하는지는 속뜻이 아니고서는 아는 것이 불가능합니다. 여기 이 컨넥션 자체로 이미 어떤 주어진 의미가 있음을 컨펌하고 있고요, 그리고 생각할 수 있는 부가적인 것은 ‘아담(homo)과 아내’라는 표현은 지금 말하고 있는 부모 교회를 의미하는 관용적 표현이라는 것입니다. That the “man” and his “wife” here mean the new church signified above by Adah and Zillah no one could know or infer from the literal sense, because the “man and his wife” had previously signified the most ancient church and its posterity; but it is very evident from the internal sense, as well as from the fact that immediately afterwards, in the following chapter (verses 1–4), the man and his wife, and their begetting Seth, are again mentioned, but in entirely different words, and in this case there is signified the first posterity of the most ancient church. If nothing else were signified in the passage before us, there would be no need to say the same thing here: in like manner as in the first chapter the creation of man, and of the fruits of the earth, and of the beasts, is treated of, and then in the second chapter they are treated of again, for the reason, as has been said, that in the first chapter it is the creation of the spiritual man that is treated of, whereas in the second chapter the subject is the creation of the celestial man. Whenever there is such a repetition in the mention of one and the same person or thing, it is always with a difference of signification, but what it is that is signified cannot possibly be known except from the internal sense. Here, the connection itself confirms the signification that has been given, and there is the additional consideration that man [homo] and wife are general terms which signify the parent church that is in question.

1이것은 아담의 계보를 적은 책이니라 하나님이 사람을 창조하실 때에 하나님의 모양대로 지으시되 2남자와 여자를 창조하셨고 그들이 창조되던 날에 하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시고 그들의 이름을 사람이라 일컬으셨더라 3아담은 백삼십 세에 자기의 모양 곧 자기의 형상과 같은 아들을 낳아 이름을 셋이라 하였고 4아담은 셋을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며 (창5:1-4)
