더욱 주목하게 된 것은, 배운 사람들한테는 ‘사후 살게 될 혼, 즉 영은 추상적인 생각이다’라는 거 말고는 아무런 믿음도 없다는 것입니다. 이는 외연과 외연에 속한 것이면 무엇이든 어떤 말도 인정하기를 꺼리는 그들의 태도를 보면 아주 지배적입니다. 어떤 주제를 가지고 추상적으로 생각하는 것은 외연을 갖지 않지만, 생각의 주제, 그리고 생각의 대상들은 외연을 갖기 때문입니다. 외연을 갖지 않는 그런 대상들에 관하여는 사람들은 범위를 정하고, 외연을 허용합니다. 그것들을 이해하려고 말이지요. 이것으로 아주 확실히 알 수 있는 것은, 배운 사람들은 혼 또는 영의 개념과 관련, 그건 그저 생각에 지나지 않으며, 사후엔 사라지는 것으로밖에 믿지 않는다는 것입니다. It was further remarked, that the learned have no other belief than that the soul which is to live after death, that is, the spirit, is abstract thought. This is very manifest from their unwillingness to admit of any term that implies extension and what belongs to extension, because thought abstractedly from a subject is not extended, whereas the subject of the thought, and the objects of the thought, are extended; and as for those objects which are not extended, men define them by boundaries and give extension to them, in order that they may comprehend them. This shows very clearly that the learned have no other conception of the soul or spirit than that it is mere thought, and so cannot but believe that it will vanish when they die.
