21절, 여호와 하나님이 아담과 그의 아내를 위하여 가죽옷을 지어 입히시니라 And Jehovah God made for the man and for his wife coats of skin, and clothed them.

속뜻에 관한 어떤 계시 없이도, 그리고 말씀 내 유사 표현들이 나오는 여러 일련의 비교 구절들 없이도, 그 어느 쪽도 사람들이 여기 ‘가죽옷’이 영적 자연적 선을 상징한다고 볼 거라는 건 아니지 싶습니다. 겉 글자만 읽고 그걸 안다는 건 거의 불가능하기 때문입니다. 여기 ‘가죽’(skin)이라는 보통 쓰는 용어가 사용되고 있지만, 새끼염소나 양, 또는 숫양의 가죽으로 이해가 되는데요, 말씀에서 이들 동물들은 선, 체어리티(charity, 이웃 사랑)에 속한 애정을, 그리고 체어리티에 속한 것, 즉 희생제사 때 쓰이던 양과 똑같은 걸 상징합니다. 체어리티의 선, 곧 영적 자연적 선을 가진 걸로 보이는 사람들을 ‘양’(sheep)이라 하며, 그래서 주님도 ‘양의 목자’(the shepherd of the sheep)시라 하고, 체어리티를 가진 걸로 보이는 사람들을 그분의 ‘양’이라 하는 것입니다. 다들 아시는 것처럼 말입니다. Neither would it be evident to anyone that a “coat of skin” signifies spiritual and natural good, except by a revelation of the internal sense, and a subsequent comparison of passages in the Word where similar expressions occur. The general term “skin” is here used, but that of a kid, sheep, or ram, is understood, which animals in the Word signify affections of good, charity, and that which is of charity, as was likewise signified by the sheep used in the sacrifices. Those are called “sheep” who are endowed with the good of charity, that is, with spiritual and natural good, and hence the Lord is called the “shepherd of the sheep,” and those who are endowed with charity are called his “sheep,” as everybody knows.
