저는 세상에서 갓 들어온 신참 영들과 영원한 삶의 상태에 관한 이야기를 한 적이 종종 있습니다. 그들에게 말하기를, 여러분은 이 나라의 주님이 누구시며, 이 나라의 속성과 형태에 관해 아는 것이 정말 중요하다는 것을 꼭 아셔야 하는데요, 그것은 마치 이 세상에서도 다른 나라에 가는 사람들은 특별히 그 나라의 왕이 누구며, 어떤 사람인지, 그 나라 정부는 어떤 정부인지 등등 그 나라에 속한 다른 많은 것들에 대해 관심을 가져야 하는 것과 같습니다. 하물며, 여기는 이제 여러분이 영원히 살아가게 될 나라로서 여러분이 관심을 가지는 것은 너무나 당연하지 않겠습니까? 저는 그들에게 다음과 같이 말했습니다. 천국과 우주 둘 다를 다스리시는 분은 주님뿐이십니다. 하나를 다스리시는 분이 다른 쪽도 다스리셔야 하기 때문인데요, 여러분이 지금 있는 이 나라는 주님의 나라이며, 이 나라의 법은 영원한 진리들이고, 그 모든 것은 하나의 위대한 법, 곧 사람들은 주님을 무엇보다도 사랑해야 하며, 이웃을 자기 몸처럼 사랑해야 한다는 법, 심지어 지금은 자기보다 더 사랑해야 한다는 법에 베이스를 두고 있는, 그런 법입니다. 만일 여러분이 천사가 되고 싶으면, 여러분은 이 법을 반드시 지켜야 합니다. 이 모든 말을 듣고 그들은 아무 대답도 할 수 없었습니다. 그들이 아직 몸 안에 있을 때, 그들은 이런 종류의 말들을 계속해서 들었지만 계속해서 안 믿었기 때문입니다. 그들은 천국에 이런 사랑이 있다는 사실에 놀라고, 이웃을 제 몸처럼 사랑해야 한다는 말을 들어 알고는 있었는데, 여기 와보니 여기는 거기서 한 걸음 더 나아가 사람이 이웃을 자기보다 더 사랑하는 것이 가능하다는 사실들을 듣고는 경이로워하기까지 했습니다. 그러나 그들은 다음과 같은 가르침을 받았습니다. 저세상에서는 모든 선이 측량할 수 없을 정도로 확장된다는 것과, 몸 안에 있는 삶은, 사람이 몸의 일 안에 있을 수밖에 없는 태생적 이유로, 이웃을 자기 몸보다 더 사랑할 수는 없게 만든다는 것, 그러나 이런 몸을 벗게 되면, 사랑은 더욱 순수해지다가 마침내 천사처럼 사랑하게 되는데, 이 사랑은 이웃을 자기보다 더 사랑하는 그런 사랑이라는 것입니다. 이런 사랑의 가능 여부는 다음과 같은 실제 예들을 보면 분명합니다. 가령, 먼저, 결혼애입니다. 이것은 결혼한 배우자가 크게 다치는 것을 막기 위해 대신 죽음도 불사하는 사람들한테서 볼 수 있는 사랑입니다. 다음은 자녀를 사랑하는 부모의 사랑입니다. 어머니는 자기 자녀의 배고픔을 자기가 대신 담당, 유일한 식량을 흔쾌히 자녀에게 먹이고, 자기는 기꺼이 굶주림을 선택합니다. 이것은 심지어 새나 짐승들도 같습니다. 신실한 우정을 통해서도 이런 사랑을 볼 수 있는데요, 친구를 위해 기꺼이 위험을 감수하는 사랑입니다. 참된 우정을 흉내내는, 짐짓 정중함을 가장한 꾸민 우정에서조차 그렇습니다. 심지어 마음에도 없는 말을 큰소리치며 하더라도 좋게 대하며, 더 나은 것으로 제공하면서 말이지요. 최종적인 예는 바로 사랑 그 자체에 있습니다. 사랑은 다른 사람을 섬기는 데에서 기쁨을 발견합니다. 자신을 위해서가 아닌 사랑 그 자체를 위해서 말이지요. 하지만 이 모든 것은 다른 사람보다 자신을 더 사랑한 사람들, 그리고 육체적 삶 가운데 이익을 얻기 위해 탐욕적이었고, 욕심 많은 삶을 산 사람들한테는 정말 이해 불가한 것입니다. I have sometimes spoken with spirits fresh from the world concerning the state of eternal life, telling them how important it was for them to know who is the Lord of that kingdom, and what is the nature and form of its government, just as those in this world who go into another kingdom are especially interested to know who and of what sort is the king, what is the nature of the government, and many other things that belong to the kingdom; and how much more should they be interested in this kingdom, where they are to live forever. I told them that the Lord alone rules both heaven and the universe, for he who rules the one must rule the other; and that the kingdom in which they were now is the Lord’s kingdom, the laws of which are eternal truths, all of which are based on the one great law that men shall love the Lord above all things and their neighbor as themselves, and now even more than themselves, for if they would be as the angels this is what they must do. To all this they could make no reply, because in their bodily life they had heard something of the kind, but had not believed it. They marveled that there is such love in heaven, and that it is possible for anyone to love his neighbor more than himself, seeing that they had heard that they were to love their neighbor as themselves. But they were instructed that in the other life all goods are immeasurably increased, and that the life in the body is such that men can go no further than loving the neighbor as themselves because they are in the things of the body, but that when these are removed, the love becomes purer, and at last angelic, which consists in loving the neighbor more than themselves. The possibility of such love is evident from the conjugial love that exists with some persons, who would suffer death rather than let their married partner be injured; and also from the love of parents for their children, in that a mother will endure starvation rather than see her infant hunger, and this even among birds and animals; and likewise from sincere friendship, in that perils will be undergone for our friends; and even from polite and feigned friendship, that would emulate real friendship in offering the better things to those to whom we wish well, making great professions even when they do not come from the heart. And finally its possibility is evident from the very nature of love, which finds its joy in being of service to others, not for the sake of self but for the love’s own sake. But all this could not be comprehended by those who loved themselves more than others, and who in the bodily life had been greedy for gain, and least of all by the avaricious.
