천국 기쁨의 본질에 대해 무지했던 어떤 영들이 갑자기 사로잡혀 천국으로 옮겨졌습니다. 그들은 그전에 이렇게 천국으로 옮겨지는 것이 가능하도록 그들의 육체에 속한 것들, 곧 육체적 욕망과 상상 속에나 나올 법한 생각들, 곧 환상이 모두 잠재워진 후에야 천국에 들어갈 수 있었습니다. 거기서 저는 어떤 사람이 저에게 다음과 같이 말하는 것을 들었습니다. 지금 자기는 처음에는 천국 기쁨이 얼마나 엄청난지를 느꼈다고, 자기는 그동안 천국에 대해 전혀 다른, 엉뚱한 생각을 갖도록 단단히 속아왔다고, 그러나 지금은 자기 내적 존재 저 깊은 데까지 측량할 수 없는 기쁨을 지각하였는데, 이것은 자기가 몸 안에서 살 때는 결코 맛본 적 없는 즐거움이라고, 사람들은 몸 안에 살면서 그걸로 기뻐하고 그러는데, 지금 보면 그건 그냥 악취였다고 말입니다. Certain spirits who were ignorant of the nature of heavenly joy were unexpectedly taken up into heaven after they had been brought into such a state as to render this possible, that is to say a state in which their bodily things and fanciful notions were lulled into quiescence. From there I heard one saying to me that now for the first time he felt how great is the joy in heaven, and that he had been very greatly deceived in having a different idea of it, but that now he perceived in his inmost being a joy immeasurably greater than he had ever felt in any bodily pleasure such as men are delighted with in the life of the body, and which he called foul.
