같은 공동체 내의 천사들은 얼굴이 전체적인 면에서 서로 비슷하다. 그러나 세부적인 것까지 닮지는 않았다. 어떻게 전반적으로는 비슷하고, 세부적으로는 각기 다른가 하는 것은, 이 세상의 유사한 경우를 보면 어느 정도 이해할 수 있다. 잘 알려진 사실이지만, 지구상의 인종마다 얼굴과 눈에 다른 인종과 구별되는, 그들만의 공통적 특징이 있다. 각 가정을 보면 더 분명하다. 천국에서는 이것이 훨씬 더 뚜렷이 나타나는데, 천국에서는 내면의 모든 애정이 얼굴에 나타나고 환히 비치기 때문이다. 천국에서 얼굴은 내적 애정이 외부로 투영된 형상이다. 거기서는 아무도 자기 애정의 얼굴 외에 다른 얼굴을 지닐 수 없다. 같은 사회 안에서 일반적인 유사성이 어떻게 개개인에게 부분적으로 달리 나타나는가를 알게 된 또 다른 경우가 있다. 천사의 것과 같은 얼굴이 하나 내게 나타나 계속 변형되면서 자기가 소속된 사회에 있는 선과 진리에 대한 모든 애정을 보여 준 적이 있다. 오랜 시간 계속된 이 변형 과정을 보면서, 나는 전체적으로 같은 얼굴이 내내 밑바탕으로 남아있고, 거기서 나머지 세세한 부분만 매번 다르게 바뀌는 것을 발견했다. 한 사회의 구성원의 얼굴을 구별 짓는 애정 상태들이 이 얼굴을 통해서 전부 전시된 것이다. 앞에서 말한 것처럼, 천사들의 얼굴은 그들의 내면 상태의 형상이고, 따라서 사랑과 진리에 대한 애정의 형상이다. All who form the same angelic society resemble each other in countenance in a general way, but not in particulars. How these general resemblances are related to differences in particulars can in some measure be seen from like things in the world. It is well known that with every race there is a certain general resemblance of face and eyes, by which it is known and distinguished from all other races. This is still more true of different families. In the heavens this is much more fully the case, because there all the interior affections appear in and shine forth from the face, for there the face is the external and representative form of those affections. No one there can have any other face than that of his own affection. It was also shown how this general likeness is varied in particulars with individuals in the same society. A face like an angel’s appeared to me, and this was varied in accordance with such affections for good and truth as are in those who belong to a single society. These changes went on for a long time, and I noticed that the same face in general continued as a ground work, all besides being what was derived and produced from that. Thus by means of this face the affections of the whole society were exhibited, whereby the faces of those in it are varied. For, as has been said above, the faces of angels are the forms of their interiors, thus of the affections that belong to their love and faith.

비슷한 선 안에 있는 모든 천사는 비록 전에 만난 적이 없어도 마치 이 세상에서 사람들이 가족과 친척, 친구를 알아보듯 서로 알아본다. 그 이유는 저세상 삶에서 혈연과 우정은 사랑과 신앙 등으로 이루어지는 영적인 혈연과 우정 외에는 없기 때문이다.주47 이것은 내가 몸을 떠나 영으로 천사들과 함께 있을 때, 가끔 내게 허락되었던 경험이다. 어떤 사람들을 만나면 마치 어린 시절부터 안 것같이 느껴진 사람들은 나와 영의 상태가 같은 사람들이었고, 남처럼 느껴진 사람들은 나와 영의 상태가 다른 사람들이었다. Again, all who are in like good, even though they have never seen each other before, know each other, just as men in the world do their kinsmen, near relations, and friends; and for the reason that in the other life there are none but spiritual kinships, relationships, and friendships, thus such as spring from love and faith.47 This it has sometimes been granted me to see, when I have been in the spirit, and thus withdrawn from the body, and in the society of angels. Some of those I then saw seemed as if I had known them from childhood, but others as if not known at all. Those whom I seemed to have known from childhood were such as were in a state similar to that of my spirit; but those who seemed unknown were in a dissimilar state.

이상으로 천국에 있는 모든 이들을 결속시키는 것은 선이며, 그들은 선의 속성에 따라 구분된다는 것이 확실해졌다. 그러나 그들을 이렇게 연합하는 것은 천사들 자신이 아니고, 선의 근원인 주님이시다. 주께서 그들을 서로에게 이끄시고, 결속시키시며, 각각 구분하시고, 또 그 선의 정도에 맞는 자유 안에 보존하신다. 이렇게 하여 주께서는 모든 사람을 그의 사랑과 신앙에 맞고, 그의 지성과 지혜에 맞는, 또 거기서 나온 행복에 맞는 삶 안에 보존하신다.주46 All this makes clear that all in the heavens are affiliated by good, and are distinguished according to the quality of the good. Nevertheless it is not the angels who thus affiliate themselves, but the Lord, from whom the good is. The Lord leads them, conjoins and separates them, and preserves them in freedom proportionate to their good. Thus he holds everyone in the life of his love and faith, of his intelligence and wisdom, and the resulting happiness.46

주46. 사랑과 애정에는 모두 자유가 있다. 사람은 자기가 사랑하는 것을 자유롭게 행하기 때문이다. All freedom pertains to love and affection, since what a man loves, that he does freely (n. 2870, 3158, 8987, 8990, 9585, 9591). 사랑에는 자유가 있기 때문에, 모든 사람의 생명과 기쁨은 거기에서 나온다. Because freedom pertains to love, everyone’s life and delight is therefrom (n. 2873). 사람이 자유롭게 한 게 아니면, 그 어떤 것도 그 사람 자신이 될 수 없다. Nothing appears as one’s own, except what is from his freedom (n. 2880). 더할 나위 없는 자유는 주님의 인도를 받는 것이다. 사람은 그때 사랑의 선과 진리로 인도받기 때문이다. The veriest freedom is to be led by the Lord, because one is thus led by the love of good and truth (n. 892, 905, 2872, 2886, 2890–2892, 9096, 9586–9591).

비슷한 천사들은 서로에게 동시에 이끌린다. 비슷한 이들과 있으면 가족들과 집에 있는 것 같고, 다른 사람들과는 낯선 사람과 있거나 외국에 있는 것 같다. 비슷한 이들과 함께 있을 때, 그들은 자유롭고, 따라서 삶의 즐거움을 느낀다. Like are drawn spontaneously as it were to their like; for with their like they are as if with their own and at home, but with others they are as if with strangers and abroad; also when with their like they are in their freedom, and consequently in every delight of life.

한 공동체 안에 있는 천사들도 모두 같은 방법으로 구분된다. 더 완벽한 천사는 선과 사랑, 지혜, 지성이 더 뛰어나며, 이들은 중앙에 있다. 덜 뛰어난 천사는 그 둘레에 완벽성의 순서대로 자리하고 있다. 그 배열은 마치 빛이 중심에서 주변으로 갈수록 약해지는 것과 같다. 중심에 있는 천사들은 가장 밝은 빛 안에 거하고, 가장자리로 갈수록 더 흐린 빛 안에 있다. All who are in the same society are arranged in like manner in respect to each other; those who are more perfect, that is, who excel in good, thus in love, wisdom, and intelligence, being in the middle; those who are less preeminent being round about at a distance in accordance with the decrease of their perfection. The arrangement is like light diminishing from the middle to the circumference, those who are in the middle being in the greatest light, and those toward the circumference in less and less.

천국의 천사 공동체들은 그 선이 전체적으로나 부분적으로 차이가 나는 만큼 서로 떨어져 있다. 영계에서 거리는 오직 사람의 내면 상태의 차이에 기인하기 때문이다. 따라서 천국에서는 사랑의 상태가 다르면 거리가 생긴다. 많이 다른 사람들은 멀리, 약간 다르면 조금 떨어져 있다. 유사성이 그들을 함께 있게 하는 것이다.주45 Moreover, the angelic societies in the heavens are at a distance from each other as their goods differ in general and in particular. For in the spiritual world the only ground of distance is difference in the state of interiors, thus in the heavens difference in the states of love, those who differ much being far apart, and those who differ but little being but little apart, and likeness causing them to be together.45

주45. 천국 모든 소사이어티는 그들 생명의 상태 차이, 곧 사랑과 신앙의 상태 차이에 따라 어떤 일정한 위치가 정해진다. All the societies of heaven have a constant position in accordance with the differences of their state of life, thus in accordance with the differences of love and faith (n. 1274, 3638, 3639). 저세상, 곧 영들의 세계에 있는, 거리, 상황, 장소 및 시공간에 관한 놀라운 것들 Wonderful things in the other life, that is, in the spiritual world, respecting distance, situation, place, space and time (n. 1273–1277).

한 천국 안의 천사들은 모두 한자리에 모여 있지 않고, 그들의 사랑과 신앙에서 나온 선의 차이에 따라 크고 작은 사회공동체로 나뉘어 있다. 같은 선을 지닌 천사들이 한 공동체를 이룬다. 천국의 선은 무한히 다양하며, 각 천사마다 선이 다르다.주44 The angels of each heaven are not together in one place, but are divided into larger and smaller societies in accordance with the differences of good of love and of faith in which they are, those who are in like good forming a single society. Goods in the heavens are in infinite variety, and each angel is as it were his own good.44

주44. 무한한 다양성이 존재하며, 그 어떤 것도 결코 다른 것과 똑같지 않다. There is infinite variety, and never anything the same with any other (n. 7236, 9002). 천국에는 그래서 무한한 다양성이 존재한다. So in the heavens there is infinite variety (n. 684, 690, 3744, 5598, 7236). 천국의 무한한 다양성은 선의 다양성이다. Varieties in the heavens, which are infinite, are varieties of good (n. 3744, 4005, 7236, 7833, 7836, 9002). 이들 다양성은 다양한 진리를 통해 존재하며, 각 천사의 선은 이들로부터 나온다. These varieties exist through truths that are manifold, from which is each one’s good (n. 3470, 3804, 4149, 6917, 7236). 천국의 모든 공동체와 어느 한 공동체 내 모든 천사들이 서로 구분되는 것은 바로 이런 이유 때문이다. It is because of this that all the societies in the heavens, and all angels in a society, are distinct from each other (n. 690, 3241, 3519, 3804, 3986, 4067, 4149, 4263, 7236, 7833, 7836). 그럼에도 불구하고, 그들 모두는 주님에게서 오는 사랑을 통해 하나가 된다. Nevertheless they all make one through love from the Lord (n. 457, 3986).

이상이 세 천국에 관한 일반적인 사항이다. 다음은 각 천국에 대한 세부 사항을 다루겠다. These now are the general truths respecting the three heavens; but in what follows each heaven will be particularly treated of.

끝으로, 사람들이 단계에 대한 이해가 없어 지금까지 모르고 있는, 세 천국의 천사들에 관한 다음과 같은 비의(秘義, arcanum)를 이제 알릴 수 있게 되었다. 모든 천사와 사람에게는 예외 없이 가장 내적인 단계, 즉 가장 높은 단계가 있다. 이 단계로 주님의 신성이 가장 먼저, 즉 가장 내밀하게 유입되고, 거기서부터 단계적 순서대로 내면이 배열된다. 이 가장 내적인, 즉 가장 높은 단계는 천사와 사람에게 주님이 들어가시는 문, 또는 그들 안에 있는 주님만의 처소라 부를 수 있다. 사람이 사람인 것은 바로 가장 내적인 최고단계를 지니고 있기 때문이다. 사람이 동물과 다른 이유도 동물에게는 이 단계가 없기 때문이다. 이 단계가 있기 때문에, 사람은 동물과 달리 정신(mind)과 의식(disposition, character)의 내면성이 주님에 의해 주께로 고양될 수 있다. 또한 이 단계가 있기 때문에, 사람은 주님을 믿을 수 있고, 주님을 향한 사랑으로 감화될 수 있으며, 그 결과 주님을 볼 수 있다. 또 지성과 지혜를 받고, 합리적으로 말할 수도 있는 것이다. 사람이 영원히 사는 것도 이 단계가 있기 때문이다. 그러나 이 가장 내밀한 곳에 주께서 무엇을 갖추어 두셨고, 공급하시는지는 어떤 천사도 감지할 수 없다. 이는 천사의 생각과 지혜를 초월하기 때문이다. Finally, a certain arcanum respecting the angels of the three heavens, which has not hitherto come into anyone’s mind, because degrees have not been understood, may be related. In every angel and also in every man there is an inmost or highest degree, or an inmost or highest something, into which the Divine of the Lord primarily or proximately flows, and from which it disposes the other interiors in him that follow in accordance with the degrees of order. This inmost or highest degree may be called the entrance of the Lord to the angel or man, and his veriest dwelling place in them. It is by virtue of this inmost or highest that a man is a man, and is distinguished from irrational animals, for these do not have it. From this it is that man, unlike the animals, is capable, in respect to all his interiors which pertain to his mind and disposition, of being raised up by the Lord to himself, of believing in the Lord, of being moved by love to the Lord, and thereby beholding him, and of receiving intelligence and wisdom, and speaking from reason. Also, it is by virtue of this that he lives to eternity. But what is arranged and provided by the Lord in this inmost does not distinctly flow into the perception of any angel, because it is above his thought and transcends his wisdom.

단계(degrees, gradus)라는 것이 어떻게 신적 질서와 관계되는가를 모르면, 세 천국이 어떻게 구분되는지, 사람의 내면과 외면이 무엇을 뜻하는지 이해할 수 없다. 대부분의 사람들은 내면과 외면, 높은 것과 낮은 것이 맑음에서 탁함으로 이어지는 순도(純度)처럼 연속적인 것이라고 여길 것이다. 그러나 내적인 것과 외적인 것은 이어져 있지 않고, 서로 분리되어 있다. Only he who knows how degrees are related to Divine order can comprehend how the heavens are distinct, or even what is meant by the internal and the external man. Most men in the world have no other idea of what is interior and what is exterior, or of what is higher and what is lower, than as something continuous, or coherent by continuity, from purer to grosser. But the relation of what is interior to what is exterior is discrete, not continuous.

단계에는 연속 단계와 불연속 단계의 두 종류가 있다. 연속 단계는 빛이 밝은 불꽃에서 어둠에 이르기까지 점차 약해지는 단계와 같고, 밝은 곳에 있는 사물에서부터 어두운 곳의 사물로 옮겨갈 때 시력이 감소하는 단계와 같으며, 공기의 순도가 가장 낮은 곳에서 가장 높은 곳으로 이어지는 단계와 같다. 이런 단계는 거리에 의해서 결정된다. Degrees are of two kinds, those that are continuous and those that are not. Continuous degrees are related like the degrees of the waning of a light from its bright blaze to darkness, or like the degrees of the decrease of vision from objects in the light to those in the shade, or like degrees of purity in the atmosphere from bottom to top. These degrees are determined by distance.

[2] 한편, 불연속 단계는 먼저 있는 것과 나중 있는 것, 원인과 결과, 생산자와 생산물처럼 서로 분리되어 있다. 이 문제를 숙고해 본다면, 우주의 모든 것에는 이러한 생산과 조성의 단계들이 있음을 알 수 있을 것이다. 즉 하나에서 다른 것이 나오고, 거기서 제 삼의 것이 나오는 식으로 계속되는 것을 말한다. On the other hand, degrees that are not continuous, but discrete, are distinguished like prior and posterior, like cause and effect, and like what produces and what is produced. Whoever looks into the matter will see that in each thing and all things in the whole world, whatever they are, there are such degrees of producing and compounding, that is, from one a second, and from that a third, and so on.

[3] 이 불연속 단계를 이해하지 못하는 사람은 결코 세 천국의 차이나 사람의 외면과 내면의 차이를 이해할 수 없고, 영계와 자연계의 차이, 영혼과 몸의 차이도 알 수 없다. 따라서 상응과 표상의 본질과 근원도, 입류가 무엇인지도 이해하지 못한다. 감각적인 사람은 이런 구분이 있음을 납득하지 못한다. 즉 불연속 단계에 관한 것을 생각할 때도 그 증감을 연속이라는 개념으로 받아들인다. 그렇기 때문에, 그들은 영적인 것이 단지 더 순수한 자연이라고 밖에는 생각하지 못한다. 따라서 참된 지성이 없는 것이다.주43 Until one has acquired for himself a perception of these degrees he cannot possibly understand the differences between the heavens, nor between the interior and exterior faculties of man, nor the differences between the spiritual world and the natural world, nor between the spirit of man and his body. So neither can he understand the nature and source of correspondences and representations, or the nature of influx. Sensual men do not apprehend these differences, for they make increase and decrease, even according to these degrees, to be continuous, and are therefore unable to conceive of what is spiritual otherwise than as a purer natural. And in consequence they remain outside of and a great way off from intelligence.43

주43. 내적인 것들과 외적인 것들은 단계에 따라 연속적인 게 아닌, 서로 구분되며, 따로따로인 것이다, 각 단계에는 저마다의 바운드리, 경계가 있다. Things interior and things exterior are not continuous but distinct and discrete according to degrees, and each degree has its bounds (n. 3691, 5114, 5145, 8603, 10099). 어떤 하나는 어떤 다른 것으로부터 형성되며, 그렇게 형성된 것들은 무슨 연속적으로 더 순수하고 더 탁하고 한 게 아니다. One thing is formed from another, and the things so formed are not continuously purer and grosser (n. 6326, 6465). 이런 단계에 따라 내적인 것, 외적인 것 간 차이가 지각될 때까지는 사람의 속 사람, 겉 사람은 물론, 천국의 안과 밖도 명료하게 이해될 수 없다. Until the difference between what is interior and what is exterior according to such degrees is perceived, neither the internal and external man nor the interior and exterior heavens can be clearly understood (n. 5146, 6465, 10099, 10181).
