※ 천국에 오려고 나름 무슨 추구를 하는 아주 많은 사람들이, 그러나 정작 천국이 어떤 곳인지, 천국의 기쁨이 무엇인지, 천국은 서로 사랑하는 곳이며, 천국의 기쁨은 그런 사랑에서 나오는 기쁨이라는 등의 사실들을 전혀 모른 채 세상을 떠나 이곳에 오고 있습니다.

어떤 영이 제 왼쪽에 달라붙어 제게 묻기를, 자기가 어떻게 천국에 올 수 있었는지 아십니까 하였습니다. 저는 허락을 받아 그 영에게 말하기를, 천국 입국 허가는 오직 주님에게만 속한 것이며, 주님만이 어떤 사람의 퀄러티를 아십니다 대답하였습니다. 천국에 오려고 나름 무슨 추구를 하는 아주 많은 사람들이, 그러나 정작 천국이 어떤 곳인지, 천국의 기쁨이 무엇인지, 천국은 서로 사랑하는 곳이며, 천국의 기쁨은 그런 사랑에서 나오는 기쁨이라는 등의 사실들을 전혀 모른 채 세상을 떠나 이곳에 오고 있습니다. 그래서 이런 걸 모르고 오는 사람들을 위해 먼저 실제 경험을 통해 배우게 하고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 세상을 떠나 막 도착한 어떤 신참 영이 있었습니다. 그 역시 같은 식, 그러니까 천국에 대한 철저한 무지 가운데서도 천국을 갈망하던 사람이었는데, 그런 그에게 천국의 본성이 어떤 것인지 직접 지각하게 하려고, 그의 내면들을 열어 천국의 기쁨 얼마를 실제 느껴볼 수 있게 했습니다. 그는 천국을 향해 열린 내면들을 통해 천국의 기운이 닿자마자 온몸을 비틀며 고통스러워하더니 제발 자기를 좀 옮겨달라고, 자기는 극심한 괴로움 때문에 도저히 살 수가 없다고 하는 것이었습니다. 그러자 천국을 향해 열렸던 그의 내면들이 도로 닫혔고, 그렇게 그의 상태는 다시 원래대로 회복되었습니다. 이 사례를 통해, 우리는 천국에 대한 준비가 전혀 안 된 사람들은 아주 잠깐이라도, 양심의 격렬한 고통과 고문을 당하는 듯한 극심한 괴로움을 맛보게 된다는 것을, 즉 단 한 순간이라도 천국 안에 발을 들여놓을 수가 없음을 알 수 있었습니다. A certain spirit attached himself to my left side, and asked me whether I knew how he could get into heaven. I was permitted to tell him that admission into heaven belongs solely to the Lord, who alone knows what a man’s quality is. Very many arrive from the world who make it their sole pursuit to get into heaven, being quite ignorant of what heaven is, and of what heavenly joy is, that heaven is mutual love, and that heavenly joy is the derivative joy. Therefore those who do not know this are first instructed about it by actual experience. For example, there was a certain spirit, newly arrived from the world, who in like manner longed for heaven, and in order that he might perceive what the nature of heaven is, his interiors were opened so that he should feel something of heavenly joy. But as soon as he felt it he began to lament and to writhe, and begged to be delivered, saying that he could not live on account of the anguish; and therefore his interiors were closed toward heaven, and in this way he was restored. From this instance we may see with what pangs of conscience and with what anguish those are tortured who not being prepared for it are admitted even but a little way.
