지상의 모든 것은 세 종류로 구분되며, 각기 동물계(the animal kingdom), 식물계(the vegetable kingdom), 광물계(the mineral kingdom)로 지칭된다. 동물계에 속한 것은 생동하기 때문에 제1등급의 상응이다. 식물계에 속한 것은 단순히 자라기만 하므로 제2등급의 상응이다. 광물계에 속한 것은 생동하지도, 자라지도 않기 때문에 제3등급의 상응이다. 동물계의 상응물은 땅 위에서 걷고 기고 공중에 나는 다양한 종류의 생물인데, 잘 알려져 있으므로 일일이 나열하지 않겠다. 식물계의 상응물은 뜰, 숲, 들판과 초원에 자라는 온갖 생물이다. 이들도 잘 알려져 있으므로 여기 구체적으로 열거하지 않는다. 광물계의 상응물은 모든 귀금속과 보통 금속, 보석과 돌, 다양한 종류의 토양과 물이다. 이 외에도 사람이 사용하기 위해 가공한 것들, 즉 모든 종류의 음식, 옷, 집, 건물 등도 상응물이다. All things of the earth are distinguished into three kinds, called kingdoms, namely, the animal kingdom, the vegetable kingdom, and the mineral kingdom. The things of the animal kingdom are correspondences in the first degree, because they live; the things of the vegetable kingdom are correspondences in the second degree, because they merely grow; the things of the mineral kingdom are correspondences in the third degree, because they neither live nor grow. Correspondences in the animal kingdom are living creatures of various kinds, both those that walk and creep on the ground and those that fly in the air; these need not be specially named, as they are well known. Correspondences in the vegetable kingdom are all things that grow and abound in gardens, forests, fields, and meadows; these, too, need not be named, because they are well known. Correspondences in the mineral kingdom are metals more and less noble, stones precious and not precious, earths of various kinds, and also the waters. Besides these the things prepared from them by human activity for use are correspondences, as foods of every kind, clothing, dwellings and other buildings, with many other things.
