천국과 교회 안에 있는 사람들은 주님 안에 있고, 주님이 그들 안에 계신다. 이것은 주께서 다음의 말씀으로 가르치신 것이다. The Lord teaches that those that are in heaven and in the church are in the Lord and the Lord is in them, when he says:

4내 안에 거하라 나도 너희 안에 거하리라 가지가 포도나무에 붙어 있지 아니하면 스스로 열매를 맺을 수 없음 같이 너희도 내 안에 있지 아니하면 그러하리라 5나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지라 그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니 나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없음이라 (요15:4, 5) Abide in Me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abide in the vine, so neither can ye, except ye abide in Me. I am the Vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in Me and I in him, the same beareth much fruit; for apart from Me ye can do nothing (John 15:4, 5).

세상에 살 때 자기가 행한 선과 믿어온 진리가 모두 자기 자신에게서 나온 것이라고, 또는 자기 것이 되었다고 확신한 영들이 있다. 선행을 자기 공로로 여기고, 스스로 의롭다고 생각하는 사람은 모두 그런 신념이 있다. 그런 영들은 천국에 받아들여지지 않는다. 천사들은 그들을 어리석은 도둑이라 여겨 피한다. 어리석다는 이유는, 그 영들의 관심사가 신성이 아니라 자기 자신뿐이기 때문이다. 도둑이라는 이유는, 그들이 주님의 것을 가로채려 하기 때문이다. 이런 태도는 천사들 안에 있는 주의 신성이 천국을 이룬다는 천국의 신념에 반대되는 것이다. Such spirits as have confirmed themselves during their life in the world in the belief that the good they do and the truth they believe is from themselves, or is appropriated to them as their own (which is the belief of all who place merit in good actions and claim righteousness to themselves) are not received into heaven. Angels avoid them. They look upon them as stupid and as thieves; as stupid because they continually have themselves in view and not the Divine; and as thieves because they steal from the Lord what is his. These are averse to the belief of heaven, that it is the Divine of the Lord in the angels that makes heaven.

천사들은 그들의 지혜로 이 사실을 더 깊이 알고 있다. 그들은 선하고 참된 모든 것뿐 아니라, 삶의 모든 것이 주께로부터 온다고 말한다. 그들이 이것을 확증하는 것은, 어떤 것도 그보다 먼저 있는 것 없이는 존재할 수 없다는 원리를 알기 때문이다. 따라서 모든 것은 하나의 처음 존재에서 비롯된다는 것이다. 그 처음 존재를 모든 생명의 궁극적 존재라 부른다. 같은 원리로 만물은 존속한다. 존속한다는 것은 끊임없는 생겨남이며, 중간 매체들을 통해 처음 존재와 끊임없이 연결되지 않는 것은 그 즉시 사라지고 완전히 소멸되고 만다. 생명의 원천은 오직 하나이며, 사람의 생명은 거기서 나오는 물줄기라고 천사들은 덧붙인다. 따라서 그 물줄기가 끊임없이 원천으로부터 흐름을공급받지 않으면 즉시 말라 없어진다는 것이다. Angels from their wisdom go still further. They say that not only everything good and true is from the Lord, but everything of life as well. They confirm it by this, that nothing can spring from itself, but only from something prior to itself; therefore all things spring from a first, which they call the very being [esse] of the life of all things. And in like manner all things continue to exist, for continuous existence is a ceaseless springing forth, and whatever is not continually held by means of intermediates in connection with the first instantly disperses and is wholly dissipated. They say also that there is but one fountain of life, and that man’s life is a rivulet therefrom, which if it did not unceasingly continue from its fountain would immediately flow away.

[2] 더 나아가, 그 유일한 생명의 원천은 주님이시고, 주님으로부터 나오는 것은 오직 신적 선과 신적 진리밖에 없으며, 그것은 받아들이는 사람에 따라 그 영향이 달라진다고 한다. 즉 선과 진리를 믿음과 생활 안에 받아들이는 사람에게는 그것이 천국이 되고, 선과 진리를 거부하고 질식시키는 사람은 그것을 지옥으로 만든다. 그가 선을 악으로, 진리를 거짓으로 변질시켜 생명을 죽음으로 만들기 때문이다. 또 천사들은 생명의 모든 것이 주께로부터 온다는 사실을 다음과 같이 확증한다. 우주 만물은 선과 진리에 연관되어 있다. 선은 사람의 의지의 생명, 즉 사랑의 생명에 연관되어 있고, 진리는 사람의 사고력의 생명, 즉 그의 신앙의 생명에 연관되어 있다. 그러므로 선과 진리가 위에서 오기 때문에 삶의 모든 것도 위에서 오는 것이다. Again, they say that from this one fountain of life, which is the Lord, nothing goes forth except Divine good and Divine truth, and that each one is affected by these in accordance with his reception of them—those who receive them in faith and life find heaven in them while those who reject them or stifle them change them into hell; for they change good into evil and truth into falsity, thus life into death. Again, that everything of life is from the Lord they confirm by this: that all things in the universe have relation to good and truth—the life of man’s will, which is the life of his love, to good, and the life of his understanding, which is the life of his faith, to truth; and since everything good and true comes from above it follows that everything of life must come from above.

[3] 천사들은 이것을 분명히 알기 때문에, 자기들의 선행에 대한 감사를 전부 거절하고, 선을 천사들의 공로로 돌리는 사람들이 있으면 화를 내고 물러선다. 그들은 누군가 지혜와 선이 자아로부터 나온다고 생각할 수 있다는 사실에 놀란다. 자기 자신을 목적으로 선을 행하는 것은 자아에서 나오는 것이므로 천사들은 선이라고 부르지 않는다. 선 자체를 목적으로 선을 행하는 것은 신성에서 온 선이라고 부른다. 그 선이야말로 주께로부터 나오는 선이며, 이것이 천국을 이룬다고 천사들은 말한다.주18 This being the belief of the angels they refuse all thanks for the good they do, and are displeased and withdraw if anyone attributes good to them. They wonder how anyone can believe that he is wise from himself or does anything good from himself. Doing good for one’s own sake they do not call good, because it is done from self. But doing good for the sake of good they call good from the Divine; and this they say is the good that makes heaven, because this good is the Lord.18

주18. 주님으로 말미암는 선은 그 안에 내적으로 주님이 계시지만, 사람으로 말미암는 선은 그렇지 않다. Good from the Lord has the Lord inwardly in it, but good from one’s own has not (n. 1802, 3951, 8480).
