그러므로 지혜가 뛰어난 천사는 다른 천사의 얼굴을 보고 즉각 그의 성품을 안다. 천국에서는 아무도 표정으로 내면을 감추거나 꾸밀 수 없고, 간계나 위선으로 속이거나 현혹시킬 수 없다. 가끔 위선자들이 천국 공동체로 잠입하는 경우가 있다. 이 위선자들은 내면을 감추고 겉모습을 꾸며, 그 사회 사람들과 동질적인 선의 형상으로 보이게 하는 법을 익혀 빛의 천사처럼 가장하는 영들이다. 그러나 이들은 거기 오래 머물 수가 없다. 내적으로 심한 고통을 느끼고, 고문당하는 것 같으며, 얼굴이 창백해지고, 마치 죽은 사람처럼 되기 때문이다. 이런 현상이 일어나는 것은, 그들에게 흘러들어 원동력이 되는 생명이 그 사회의 생명과 상반되기 때문이다. 따라서 그들은 재빨리 자기와 같은 부류가 있는 지옥으로 몸을 던지고 다시는 올라올 엄두도 내지 않는다. 이런 영들은 성서에, 혼인 잔치에 초대되었으나 예복을 입지 않아서 바깥 어두운 데 내던져진 사람들로 비유되어 있다.(마22:11이하) From this it also comes to pass that an angel who excels in wisdom instantly sees the quality of another from his face. In heaven no one can conceal his interiors by his expression, or feign, or really deceive and mislead by craft or hypocrisy. There are hypocrites who are experts in disguising their interiors and fashioning their exteriors into the form of that good in which those are who belong to a society, and who thus make themselves appear angels of light; and these sometimes insinuate themselves into a society; but they cannot stay there long, for they begin to suffer inward pain and torture, to grow livid in the face, and to become as it were lifeless. These changes arise from the contrariety of the life that flows in and affects them. Therefore they quickly cast themselves down into hell where their like are, and no longer want to ascend. These are such as are meant by the man found among the invited guests at the feast not clothed with a wedding garment, who was cast out into outer darkness (Matt. 22:11 seq.).

※ 같은 공동체 내의 천사들은 얼굴이 전체적인 면에서 서로 비슷하다. 그러나 세부적인 것까지 닮지는 않았다.

같은 공동체 내의 천사들은 얼굴이 전체적인 면에서 서로 비슷하다. 그러나 세부적인 것까지 닮지는 않았다. 어떻게 전반적으로는 비슷하고, 세부적으로는 각기 다른가 하는 것은, 이 세상의 유사한 경우를 보면 어느 정도 이해할 수 있다. 잘 알려진 사실이지만, 지구상의 인종마다 얼굴과 눈에 다른 인종과 구별되는, 그들만의 공통적 특징이 있다. 각 가정을 보면 더 분명하다. 천국에서는 이것이 훨씬 더 뚜렷이 나타나는데, 천국에서는 내면의 모든 애정이 얼굴에 나타나고 환히 비치기 때문이다. 천국에서 얼굴은 내적 애정이 외부로 투영된 형상이다. 거기서는 아무도 자기 애정의 얼굴 외에 다른 얼굴을 지닐 수 없다. 같은 사회 안에서 일반적인 유사성이 어떻게 개개인에게 부분적으로 달리 나타나는가를 알게 된 또 다른 경우가 있다. 천사의 것과 같은 얼굴이 하나 내게 나타나 계속 변형되면서 자기가 소속된 사회에 있는 선과 진리에 대한 모든 애정을 보여 준 적이 있다. 오랜 시간 계속된 이 변형 과정을 보면서, 나는 전체적으로 같은 얼굴이 내내 밑바탕으로 남아있고, 거기서 나머지 세세한 부분만 매번 다르게 바뀌는 것을 발견했다. 한 사회의 구성원의 얼굴을 구별 짓는 애정 상태들이 이 얼굴을 통해서 전부 전시된 것이다. 앞에서 말한 것처럼, 천사들의 얼굴은 그들의 내면 상태의 형상이고, 따라서 사랑과 진리에 대한 애정의 형상이다. All who form the same angelic society resemble each other in countenance in a general way, but not in particulars. How these general resemblances are related to differences in particulars can in some measure be seen from like things in the world. It is well known that with every race there is a certain general resemblance of face and eyes, by which it is known and distinguished from all other races. This is still more true of different families. In the heavens this is much more fully the case, because there all the interior affections appear in and shine forth from the face, for there the face is the external and representative form of those affections. No one there can have any other face than that of his own affection. It was also shown how this general likeness is varied in particulars with individuals in the same society. A face like an angel’s appeared to me, and this was varied in accordance with such affections for good and truth as are in those who belong to a single society. These changes went on for a long time, and I noticed that the same face in general continued as a ground work, all besides being what was derived and produced from that. Thus by means of this face the affections of the whole society were exhibited, whereby the faces of those in it are varied. For, as has been said above, the faces of angels are the forms of their interiors, thus of the affections that belong to their love and faith.

비슷한 선 안에 있는 모든 천사는 비록 전에 만난 적이 없어도 마치 이 세상에서 사람들이 가족과 친척, 친구를 알아보듯 서로 알아본다. 그 이유는 저세상 삶에서 혈연과 우정은 사랑과 신앙 등으로 이루어지는 영적인 혈연과 우정 외에는 없기 때문이다.주47 이것은 내가 몸을 떠나 영으로 천사들과 함께 있을 때, 가끔 내게 허락되었던 경험이다. 어떤 사람들을 만나면 마치 어린 시절부터 안 것같이 느껴진 사람들은 나와 영의 상태가 같은 사람들이었고, 남처럼 느껴진 사람들은 나와 영의 상태가 다른 사람들이었다. Again, all who are in like good, even though they have never seen each other before, know each other, just as men in the world do their kinsmen, near relations, and friends; and for the reason that in the other life there are none but spiritual kinships, relationships, and friendships, thus such as spring from love and faith.47 This it has sometimes been granted me to see, when I have been in the spirit, and thus withdrawn from the body, and in the society of angels. Some of those I then saw seemed as if I had known them from childhood, but others as if not known at all. Those whom I seemed to have known from childhood were such as were in a state similar to that of my spirit; but those who seemed unknown were in a dissimilar state.

주47. 천국에서는 모든 가까움, 관계, 연결 및 마치 피로 맺어진 것 같음은 선과, 그 선과 맞거나 안 맞거나 같은 걸로 말미암는다. All nearness, relationships, connections, and as it were ties of blood in heaven are from good and in accordance with its agreements and differences (n. 685, 917, 1394, 2739, 3612, 3815, 4121).
