기독교인들은 주님이 천국의 하나님이심을 의심할 수 없을 것이다. 주께서 친히 다음과 같이 말씀하셨기 때문이다. Those who are of the church cannot doubt that the Lord is the God of heaven, for he himself taught,

내 아버지께서 모든 것을 내게 주셨으니 아버지 외에는 아들을 아는 자가 없고 아들과 또 아들의 소원대로 계시를 받는 자 외에는 아버지를 아는 자가 없느니라 (마11:27) 무릇 아버지께 있는 것은 다 내 것이라 그러므로 내가 말하기를 그가 내 것을 가지고 너희에게 알리시리라 하였노라 (요16:15) 아버지께서 아들에게 주신 모든 사람에게 영생을 주게 하시려고 만민을 다스리는 권세를 아들에게 주셨음이로소이다 (요17:2) That all things of the Father are his (Matt. 11:27; John 16:15; 17:2).

예수께서 나아와 말씀하여 이르시되 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 (마28:18) And that he hath all power in heaven and on earth (Matt. 28:18).

주께서 ‘하늘과 땅’이라고 하신 것은, 천국과 이 세상은 서로 의존관계에 있으므로 천국을 다스리시는 그분께서 지상도 다스리시기 때문이다.주15 ‘하늘과 땅을 다스리신다’는 것은, 사랑의 모든 것과 신앙의 모든 것, 따라서 모든 총명과 지혜, 즉 모든 행복, 한 마디로 영생이 주님께로부터 오는 것을 의미한다. 이것도 주께서 가르치신 것이다. He says “in heaven and on earth,” because he that rules heaven rules the earth also, for the one depends upon the other.15 “Ruling heaven and earth” means to receive from the Lord every good pertaining to love and every truth pertaining to faith, thus all intelligence and wisdom, and in consequence all happiness, in a word, eternal life. This also the Lord taught when he said:

아들을 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있고 아들에게 순종하지 아니하는 자는 영생을 보지 못하고 도리어 하나님의 진노가 그 위에 머물러 있느니라 (요3:36) He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that believeth not the Son shall not see life (John 3:36).

25예수께서 이르시되 나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 26무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐 (요11:25, 26) I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth on Me, though he die yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on Me shall never die (John 11:25, 26).

예수께서 이르시되 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라 (요14:6) I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

주15. 천국 전체가 주님의 것이다. The entire heaven is the Lord’s (n. 2751, 7086). 주님은 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 갖고 계신다. He has all power in the heavens and on the earths (n. 1607, 10089, 10827). 주님이 천국을 다스리시므로 주님은 또한 천국에 의존하는 모든 것, 곧 지상의 모든 것도 다스리신다. As the Lord rules heaven He rules also all things that depend thereon, thus all things in the world (n. 2026, 2027, 4523, 4524). 주님 홀로 지옥들로부터 떨어트리시고, 악에서 떠나 선 가운데 있게 하시며, 그렇게 해서 구원하시는 권세가 있으시다. The Lord alone has power to remove the hells, to withhold from evil and hold in good, and thus to save (n. 10019).

아이들은 천국의 삼분의 일을 이루는데, 모든 아이들은 주님이 자기들의 아버지이신 것을 알고 믿는 데서 시작하여 나중에는 주님이 만유의 주이시고, 하늘과 땅의 하나님이심을 알고 믿게 된다. 아이들이 천국에서 성장하는 것과, 그들이 배움에 의해 천사의 지성과 지혜에 이르게 되는 것은 뒤에 설명할 것이다. Infants, who form a third part of heaven, are all initiated into the acknowledgment and belief that the Lord is their Father, and afterwards that he is the Lord of all, thus the God of heaven and earth. That children grow up in heaven and are perfected by means of knowledges, even to angelic intelligence and wisdom, will be seen in the following pages.

기독교인 중에 주님을 부인하고, 성부 하나님만 시인하는 신앙을 확신한 사람들은 천국에서 제외된다. 천국은 주님 한 분만을 예배하는 곳이기 때문에, 그런 사람들은 천국으로부터 오는 입류(入流, influx)를 받지 못하므로, 옳고 그름을 분별하는 능력이 점차 소멸된다. 그리고 결국 벙어리 같이 되거나 어리석게 말하고, 관절에 힘이 없는 듯 팔을 늘어뜨리고 돌아다닌다. 마찬가지로, 주의 신성(神性, the Divinity of the Lord)을 부인하고, 주의 인성(人性, his humanity)만을 시인한 사람들도 천국에서 제외된다. 소시니아 사람들(the Socinians)이 그렇다. 그들은 오른쪽으로 조금 떨어져 있는 심연에 빠져 기독교에서 온 사람들로부터 완전히 격리된다. 또 만물의 근원인 우주적 존재라는, 보이지 않는 신성을 믿으면서 주님 신앙을 거부한 사람들은 결국 어떤 신도 믿지 않는다는 것이 드러난다. 그들이 말하는 보이지 않는 신성이란, 자연의 근본적인 원리 같은 것인데, 그것은 생각의 대상이 될 수 없어서 사람이 사랑할 수도, 신앙할 수도 없기 때문이다.주14 이런 사람들은 자연주의자들과 함께 추방된다. 기독교인이 아닌 사람들의 경우는 또 다르다. 이들에 대해서는 나중에 따로 다루기로 한다. Those within the church who have denied the Lord and have acknowledged the Father only, and have confirmed themselves in that belief, are not in heaven; and as they are unable to receive any influx from heaven, where the Lord alone is worshiped, they gradually lose the ability to think what is true about any subject whatever; and finally they become as if dumb, or they talk stupidly, and ramble about with their arms dangling and swinging as if weak in the joints. Again, those who, like the Socinians, have denied the Divinity of the Lord and have acknowledged his humanity only, are likewise outside of heaven; they are brought forward a little toward the right and are let down into the deep, and are thus wholly separated from the rest that come from the Christian world. Finally, those who profess to believe in an invisible Divine, which they call the soul of the universe [ens universi], from which all things originated, and who reject all belief in the Lord, find out that they believe in no God; since this invisible Divine is to them a property of nature in her first principles, which cannot be an object of faith and love, because it is not an object of thought.14 Such have their lot among those called nature worshipers. It is otherwise with those born outside the church, who are called the heathen; these will be treated of hereafter.
