24절, 이같이 하나님이 그 사람을 쫓아내시고 에덴동산 동쪽에 그룹들과 두루 도는 불 칼을 두어 생명 나무의 길을 지키게 하시니라 And he cast out the man; and he made to dwell from the east toward the garden of Eden cherubim, and the flame of a sword turning itself, to keep the way of the tree of lives.

‘그 사람을 쫓아내시고’(To cast out the man)는 그에게서 선에 관한 모든 의지와 진리에 관한 모든 이해, 이성을 깡그리 빼앗는 것입니다. 그런 것들로부터까지 분리가 되어 더는 사람이라 할 수 없을 지경이 되도록 말입니다. To “cast out the man” is to entirely deprive him of all the will of good and understanding of truth, insomuch that he is separated from them, and is no longer man.
※ 사람은 의지와 이해(will and understanding)가 있어 사람인데 이런 근본들하고도 분리가 되었으니 그러므로 더는 ‘사람’이라 할 수 없는 지경, 곧 창세기 1장 2절, ‘혼돈과 공허, 흑암’의 상태까지 갔다, 원위치되었다는 말입니다.
‘동쪽에 그룹들을 두어’(To make cherubim from the east to dwell)는 그가 무슨 신앙의 신비와 관련된 것 안으로 못 들어오게 하는 것입니다. ‘에덴동산 동쪽’(the east toward the garden of Eden)은 천적(天的, the celestial)이요, 여기서 지성이 나오기 때문이며, ‘그룹들’(cherubim)은 저런 상태에 있는 사람이 신앙과 관련된 것들 안으로 들어오는 것을 금하시는 주님의 섭리를 상징하기 때문입니다. ‘두루 도는 불 칼’(the flame of a sword turning itself)은 광적(狂的, insane) 욕망과 그로 인해 고착된(固着, persuasions) 자아 사랑을 말하며, 이것이 바로, 그는 정말 신앙의 신비, 곧 ‘에덴동산’ 안으로 들어가고 싶어 하지만, 곧바로 육적(肉的, corporeal)이고 세속적인 것들에 휩쓸려 버리고 마는, 그런 것입니다. 이것이 바로 ‘생명 나무의 길을 지키는’(keeping the way of the tree of lives) 목적, 즉 거룩한 것들에 대한 신성모독을 막으시는 목적입니다. To “make cherubim from the east to dwell” is to provide against his entering into any secret thing of faith; for the “east toward the garden of Eden” is the celestial, from which is intelligence; and by “cherubim” is signified the providence of the Lord in preventing such a man from entering into the things of faith. By the “flame of a sword turning itself” is signified self-love with its insane desires and consequent persuasions, which are such that he indeed wishes to enter, but is carried away to corporeal and earthly things, and this for the purpose of “keeping the way of the tree of lives,” that is, of preventing the profanation of holy things.
