24절, 이같이 하나님이 그 사람을 쫓아내시고 에덴동산 동쪽에 그룹들과 두루 도는 불 칼을 두어 생명 나무의 길을 지키게 하시니라 And he cast out the man; and he made to dwell from the east toward the garden of Eden cherubim, and the flame of a sword turning itself, to keep the way of the tree of lives.

여기서 말씀드리고 있는 내용이 첫 사람(the first man)에 관한 것이라는 사실로부터 분명한 것은, 오늘날 존재하는 모든 유전 악은 그(him)로 말미암은 게 아니라는 것입니다. 가정이 잘못된 것입니다. 그 이유는, 여기 ‘사람’이라는 이름으로 다루고 있는 것은 태고(太古, the most ancient) 교회이기 때문입니다. 이 교회를 ‘아담’이라 하면서 상징하는 것은, 사람은 땅으로 말미암았다는 것, 즉 ‘사람이 아닌’(nonman) 상태에서 시작, 주님으로 말미암아 거듭나 ‘사람’이 되었다는 것입니다. From what is here said of the first man, it is evident that all the hereditary evil existing at the present day did not come from him, as is falsely supposed. For it is the most ancient church that is here treated of under the name of “man”; and when it is called “Adam,” it signifies that man was from the ground, or that from being nonman he became man by regeneration from the Lord.

 

※ 겉모습이 사람이라고 사람이 되는 게 아닙니다. 그 안에 주님의 신성이 깃들어야 비로소 ‘사람’이 되는 것입니다.

 

이것이 그 이름의 기원과 상징입니다. 유전 악에 대해서는 그 경우는 이런데요, 실제 죄를 짓는 사람마다 자신에게 그로 인한 어떤 본성(a nature)을 초래하며, 그로 인한 악이 그의 어린 자녀들에게 심겨 유전 악이 되는 것입니다. This is the origin and signification of the name. But as to hereditary evil, the case is this. Everyone who commits actual sin thereby induces on himself a nature, and the evil from it is implanted in his children, and becomes hereditary.

유전악은 그렇게 모든 부모로부터, 아버지, 할아버지, 증조 및 가계를 따라 그들의 선조로부터 이어져 내려오며, 그렇게 각각의 이어지는 후손들 안에서 배가하고 늘어납니다. 유전악은 각 사람 안에 머무르며, 각자 실제 짓는 죄로 인해 증가하고, 주님으로 말미암아 거듭나고 있는 사람들을 제외하고는 절대 사람에게 해가 되지 않도록 저절로 소멸하는 일은 결코 일어나지 않습니다. 주의 깊게 관찰하시는 모든 분들은 다음과 같은 사실을 통해 이 말이 맞다는 것을 분명히 확인하실 수 있습니다. 부모의 악한 경향은 자녀들 안에 눈에 보이도록 남아 한 가계, 심지어 그 종족 전체가 그로 인해 다른 모든 가계나 종족들하고 구별될 수도 있을 정도라는 걸 말입니다. It thus descends from every parent, from the father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and their ancestors in succession, and is thus multiplied and augmented in each descending posterity, remaining with each person, and being increased in each by his actual sins, and never being dissipated so as to become harmless except in those who are being regenerated by the Lord. Every attentive observer may see evidence of this truth in the fact that the evil inclinations of parents remain visibly in their children, so that one family, and even an entire race, may be thereby distinguished from every other.
