※ 혼이나 영에 대해 가졌던 생각에 관하여 그들을 만나보고 쓴 몇 가지 사례들

다른 삶(the other life)에서는 사람들이 혼(soul), 영(spirit) 및 사후 삶(life after death)에 관해 몸 안에서 살 동안 품었던 견해들을 더욱 명료하게 지각하게 되는데요, 그 이유는 몸 안에 있었을 때와 비슷한 상태에 놓이게 되면, 그들은 그때와 같은 방식으로 생각하는데, 그때 그들의 생각이 마치 큰 소리로 말하는 것처럼 명료하게 서로 소통되기 때문입니다. 어떤 사람 이야기입니다. 그는 죽은 지 얼마 안 된 사람이었는데, 제가 그에게서 지각한 건 다음과 같습니다. (그가 혼자 중얼거린 겁니다) 그는 생전에 영의 존재를 정말로 믿었던 사람이지만, 속으로는 ‘나는 사후 무슨 안개 같은 생명으로 살게 될 거야. 왜냐하면, 몸의 생명이 그치면 남는 것은 안개같이 희미한 것밖에 없을 테니까...’라고 생각하던 사람이었습니다. 그가 생명이라는 것을 몸 안에 있는 것으로만 보았고, 영은 일종의 유령처럼 생각했었기 때문인데, 그는 사람들이 가진 생명과 거의 같은 생명을 짐승들도 갖고 있는 걸 보고, 이런 생각을 스스로 확신했던 겁니다. 그랬던 그가 이제는 경이로워하고 있었습니다. 영들과 천사들이 가장 밝은 빛 가운데 살며, 또 너무나 완벽하여 도저히 말로 설명하기가 정말 쉽지 않은 그런 퍼셉션(perception)을 가지고, 가장 놀라운 지성과 지혜, 그리고 행복 속에서 살고 있기 때문이었으며, 그 결과 그들의 삶은 모호함과는 너무나 거리가 먼, 가장 완벽한 명료함과 확실함 가운데 있기 때문이었습니다. In the other life it is given to perceive clearly what opinions people had entertained while they lived in the body concerning the soul, the spirit, and the life after death; for when kept in a state resembling that of the body they think in the same way, and their thought is communicated as plainly as if they spoke aloud. In the case of one person, not long after his decease, I perceived (what he himself confessed) that he had indeed believed in the existence of the spirit, but had imagined that it must live after death an obscure kind of life, because if the life of the body were withdrawn there would remain nothing but what is dim and obscure; for he had regarded life as being in the body, and therefore he had thought of the spirit as being a phantom; and he had confirmed himself in this idea from seeing that brutes also have life, almost as men have it. He now marveled that spirits and angels live in the greatest light, and in the greatest intelligence, wisdom, and happiness, attended with a perception so perfect that it can scarcely be described; consequently that their life, so far from being obscure, is most perfectly clear and distinct.
