계속해서 진도를 나가기 전에 먼저, 홍수 이전 교회의 상황은 어땠는지를 좀 말씀드리는 게 좋을 것 같습니다. 일반적으로는, 후에 일어난 교회들의 상황들과 같았다 말씀드릴 수 있겠습니다. 즉, 주님 강림 전 유대교회의 경우나, 주님 강림 후 기독교회의 경우처럼, 참 신앙 지식의 부패와 타락, 뒤집힘 및 불순물을 섞음 등이 되어갔던 것입니다. 그러나 자세히는, 홍수 전 교회에 속한 사람의 경우, 그는 시간이 흐르면서 무서운 신념, 곧 소름 끼치는 망상을 품게 되었고, 신앙에 속한 선과 진리를 역겨운 갈망, 욕망에 철저히 잠기게 하여 그 결과, 그들 안에 리메인스가 거의 남아 있지 않을 지경까지 가도록 만들었습니다. 그들이 이 상태에 이르렀을 때, 그들은 사실은 스스로를 질식시킨 것입니다. 왜냐하면, 사람은 리메인스 없이는 살 수가 없기 때문입니다. 전에 말씀드린 것처럼(AC.530), 사람을 짐승 수준의 삶에서 인간의 삶으로 고양하는 것이 바로 이 리메인스이기 때문입니다. 리메인스를 가지고, 즉, 주님에게서 온 리메인스를 통해서, 사람은 사람이 될 수도, 무엇이 선이요, 진리인지를 알 수도, 온갖 종류의 일들을 생각할 수도, 그리고 결과적으로 이성적으로 사고할 수도 있는 것입니다. 리메인스 그 안에는 영적, 천적 생명이 있기 때문입니다. Before proceeding further we may mention how the case was with the church before the flood. Speaking generally, it was as with succeeding churches, as with the Jewish church before the Lord’s advent, and the Christian church after his advent, in that it had corrupted and adulterated the knowledges of true faith; but specifically, as regards the man of the church before the flood, he in course of time conceived direful persuasions, and immersed the goods and truths of faith in foul yearnings, insomuch that there were scarcely any remains in them. When they came into this state they were suffocated as if of themselves, for man cannot live without remains; for, as we have said, it is in the remains that the life of man is superior to that of brutes. From remains, that is, through remains from the Lord, man is able to be as man, to know what is good and true, to reflect upon matters of every kind, and consequently to think and to reason; for in remains alone is there spiritual and celestial life.
