최고의 교육을 받은 그들 모두는 말하기를, 천국의 기쁨은 체어리티의 선을 행하는 삶은 좀 부족해도 대신 오직 주님을 찬양하고, 영광 돌리기만 하면 되는 것이며, 이런 게 활발한 삶이라고 했습니다. 그러나 그들이 들은 말은, 주님을 찬양하고 축하하는 것은 액티브 라이프가 의미하는 게 아니라 그런 삶의 효과일 뿐이라는 것, 주님은 찬양은 굳이 필요로 하지 않으시는 대신, 그들이 체어리티의 선 행하는 건 원하신다는 것, 그들이 주님으로부터 받게 될 행복은 이에 비례할 것이라는 그런 내용이었습니다. 그러나 여전히 이들 최고의 교육을 받은 사람들은 이들 체어리티의 선 행함에 관해 무슨 노예 상태라는 생각말고는 아무런 기쁨도 느낄 수 없었습니다. 그러나 천사들은 증언하기를, 그런 삶은 가장 자유로운 삶이며, 말로 표현할 수 없는 행복과 결합하는 것이라고 했습니다. The best instructed of them all said that heavenly joy consists solely in praising and glorifying the Lord, being a life destitute of any doing of the goods of charity, and that this is an active life. But they were told that praising and celebrating the Lord is not such an active life as is meant, but is an effect of that life; for the Lord has no need of praises, but wills that they should do the goods of charity, and that it is according to these that they will receive happiness from the Lord. But still these best instructed persons could form no idea of joy, but of servitude, in doing these goods of charity. But the angels testified that such a life is the freest of all, and that it is conjoined with happiness unutterable.

세상에서 말씀에 관하여 가장 많이 배운 사람이 있었는데, 그가 생각하는 천국의 기쁨이란, 영광의 빛, 곧 태양 광선이 어떤 황금빛 색조로 나타날 때와 같은 그런 빛, 그래서 그로 하여금 천국 기쁨이란 안락한 삶으로 이루어진다 굳게 믿게 하는 그런 것이었습니다. 그가 착오 가운데 있음을 스스로 알 수 있도록 그에게 그런 빛이 비쳤고, 그 빛 가운데서 그는 자기가 말한 대로, 정말 자기가 천국에 있는 듯 무척 즐거워했습니다. 그러나 그는 그 빛 가운데 오래 머무를 수가 없었습니다. 그 빛은 점점 그를 지겹게 했고, 급기야 하나도 기쁘지 않게 되었기 때문입니다. One who in this world had been most learned in regard to the Word, had the idea that heavenly joy consists in being in a glorious light, like that which exists when the solar rays appear of a golden hue, so that he too supposed it to consist in a life of ease. In order that he might know himself to be in error, such a light was granted him, and he, being in the midst of the light, was as delighted as if he were in heaven, as indeed he said. But he could not remain long in it, for it gradually wearied him and became no joy at all.

어떤 영들은 생각하기를, 천국은 안락한 삶, 다른 사람들의 섬김을 받는 그런 삶으로 이루어진다고 말이지요. 그러나 이들은 다음과 같은 말을 듣게 됩니다. 행복의 수단으로 안락하기만 한 그런 행복은 전혀 불가능하다는, 너무나 많은 사람들이 타인의 행복을 지류삼아 자신이 행복하기를 원하기 때문인데, 모든 사람이 그런 걸 원하면 아무도 행복할 수 없을 것이라는 그런 말들입니다. 그런 삶은 활발한 삶이 아닌 게으른 삶이며, 그렇게 사는 사람들은 무기력해질 겁니다. 비록 생각은 그렇게 해도 실제로는 그들 역시 활발한 삶 없이 행복할 수는 없다는 걸 알고 있을 겁니다. 천사의 삶은 쓰임새의 삶 및 체어리티의 선으로 구성됩니다. 천사들은 다음과 같은 일을 하는 것보다 더 큰 행복이 없음을 알고 있는데요, 이를 테면, 세상에서 막 도착한 영들을 가르치고 교육하는 일, 사람들을 섬기며, 악한 영들로 하여금 그 정해진 바운더리를 넘지 못하게 하고, 선으로 사람들을 격려하는 일, 그리고 영원한 삶을 향해 죽은 자를 일으키며, 그때 그 영들이 돌봄이 가능한 영들이면 그들에게 천국을 소개하는 일 등입니다. Some think that heaven consists in a life of ease, in which they are served by others; but they are told that there is no possible happiness in being at rest as a means of happiness, for so everyone would wish to have the happiness of others made tributary to his own happiness; and when everyone wished this, no one would have happiness. Such a life would not be an active life, but an idle one, in which they would grow torpid, and yet they might know that there is no happiness except in an active life. Angelic life consists in use, and in the goods of charity; for the angels know no greater happiness than in teaching and instructing the spirits that arrive from the world; in being of service to men, controlling the evil spirits about them lest they pass the proper bounds, and inspiring the men with good; and in raising up the dead to the life of eternity, and then, if the souls are such as to render it possible, introducing them into heaven.

이 모든 일을 통해 그들은 이렇게 글로 묘사할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더한 행복을 지각합니다. 그래서 그들은 모두가 주님의 이미지들이며, 그래서 그들은 자신들보다 이웃을 더 사랑합니다. 그리고 이런 이유로, 천국이 천국인 것입니다. 그래서 천사의 행복은 쓰임새 안에, 쓰임새로부터, 그리고 쓰임새만큼 있습니다. 즉 사랑의 선들과 체어리티의 선들만큼 천사들은 행복합니다. 천국의 기쁨은 안락한 삶, 숨이나 쉬며 영원히 기뻐하는 그런 것이라고 생각했던 사람들이 이런 이야기를 듣게 되면, 수치심을 느낄 수 있도록 그들에게 그런 삶이 실제로 어떤 삶인지를 깨닫게 하는 지각이 주어지는데요, 이로 인해 그들은 그런 삶은 정말 비참한 삶이며, 모든 기쁨을 파괴하고, 얼마 지나지 않아 혐오하고 역겨워하게 될 그런 삶이라는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. From all this they perceive more happiness than can possibly be described. Thus are they images of the Lord; thus do they love the neighbor more than themselves; and for this reason heaven is heaven. So that angelic happiness is in use, from use, and according to use, that is, it is according to the goods of love and of charity. When those who have the idea that heavenly joy consists in living at ease, idly breathing in eternal joy, have heard these things, they are given to perceive, in order to shame them, what such a life really is, and they perceive that it is a most sad one, that it is destructive of all joy, and that after a short time they would loathe and nauseate it.
