다음은 사후 혼(souls), 즉 수련 영(修練, novitiate spirits)의 생활이라는 일반적 주제에 관해 제가 진술할 수 있는 것인데요, 많은 영계 방문 경험으로 저는, 사람이 내세(來世, the other life)에 들어오면 자기가 지금 내세에 있음을 깨닫지 못하고, 대신 자기는 아직도 이 세상에 있는 줄로, 심지어 여전히 몸 안에 있는 줄로 여긴다는 걸 알았습니다. With regard to the general subject of the life of souls, that is, of novitiate spirits, after death, I may state that much experience has shown that when a man comes into the other life he is not aware that he is in that life, but supposes that he is still in this world, and even that he is still in the body.

 

※ 사후 첫 번째 상태는 선으로든 악으로든 어느 한쪽으로 온전해지는 상태, 즉 천국 갈 영은 천국에서는 쓸데가 없는 악을, 지옥 갈 영은 지옥에서는 쓸데없는 선을 떼어내는 과정을 거치게 되는데 이걸 가리켜 ‘수련’(修練, novitiate)이라고 한 것 같습니다.

 

이런 경우, 즉 자기가 영이라는 말을 듣고는 놀람과 경악에 사로잡히는 경우가 정말 많은데요, 두 가지 이유, 하나는, 그가 보기에 자기는 지금 감각이나 욕구 및 생각하는 것에 있어 너무나도 사람과 똑같기 때문이고, 또 하나는, 자기는 세상 살 동안 영의 존재를 믿지 않았거나, 어떤 사람들처럼, 영이라는 게 지금 자기가 발견한 그런 것일 수 있다는 사실을 자기도 믿지 않았기 때문입니다. So much is this the case that when told he is a spirit, wonder and amazement possess him, both because he finds himself exactly like a man, in his senses, desires, and thoughts, and because during his life in this world he had not believed in the existence of the spirit, or, as is the case with some, that the spirit could be what he now finds it to be.
