그런데 이런 내용들이 말씀 본문 가운데 들어가게 되면, 여기저기 흩어지고, 그래서 연결이 잘 안 될 것이기 때문에, 주님은 주님의 자비(the Lord’s Divine mercy)로 제가 어떤 순서에 따라 이 창세기 각 장 앞뒤로 붙여나가게 하셨습니다. 지금 이 소개글은 예외로 하고 말입니다. But as these matters would be scattered and disconnected if inserted among those contained in the text of the Word, it is permitted, of the Lord’s Divine mercy, to append them in some order, at the beginning and end of each chapter; besides those which are introduced incidentally.

지난 수년간 제가 듣고 본 바를 이제는 밝혀도 좋다는 허락이 있어 이렇게 시작하게 되었는데요, 먼저 접하실 내용은, 사람이 몸 안에 살다가 죽어 사후 영계에서 눈을 뜰 때 무슨 일이 일어나는지, 영원한 삶으로 어떻게 들어가는지 하는 내용입니다. 저로 하여금 사람들은 사후에도 살아 있다는 걸 확실히 알게 하시려고 그들 생전에 저와 알고 지냈던 많은 사람들과 그곳에서 친구처럼 대화하고 지낼 수 있게 해 주셨습니다. 그리고 이것이 그저 하루나 한 주 정도가 아니라 무려 여러 달, 심지어 일 년 정도씩, 그들과 이 세상에서처럼 그렇게 말하고 함께 어울리게 해 주셨습니다. 그들은 자기들이 분명히 죽었는데도 여전히 세상 살 때 모습으로 살아 있다는 사실에 정말 무척 놀랐습니다. 그리고 다른 정말 많은 사람들도 그렇다는 사실에도 말이지요. 사람은 사후 그들이 내세에 들기 전 거의 하루도 무슨 단절되는 게 없습니다. 죽음은 삶의 연속입니다. As it is permitted me to disclose what for several years I have heard and seen, it shall here be told, first, how the case is with man when he is being resuscitated; or how he enters from the life of the body into the life of eternity. In order that I might know that men live after death, it has been given me to speak and be in company with many who were known to me during their life in the body; and this not merely for a day or a week, but for months, and almost a year, speaking and associating with them just as in this world. They wondered exceedingly that while they lived in the body they were, and that very many others are, in such incredulity as to believe that they will not live after death; when in fact scarcely a day intervenes after the death of the body before they are in the other life; for death is a continuation of life.

주님은 사람을 창조하실 때, 사람이 몸 안에 사는 동안에도 영들과, 그리고 천사들과 대화할 수 있게 창조하셨습니다. 실제로 태고 때에는 그랬는데요, 영이 몸을 옷처럼 입고 있는 동안에도 그는 그들과 함께 하는 것이기 때문입니다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 사람들이 육체의 일, 세상 일들에는 자신들을 깊이 잠기게 하는 대신 그밖의 것들(aught)에 대해서는 전혀 무관심하는 바람에 그만 이 길, 곧 영들 및 천사들과 대화할 수 있는 길이 닫혔습니다. 하지만 사람이 자기가 잠겼던 이 육체의 일들에서 물러나기만 하면, 바로 그 길은 다시 열립니다. 그는 다시 영들 가운데 있게 되며, 그들과 일상을 함께할 수 있게 됩니다. Man was so created by the Lord as to be able while living in the body to speak with spirits and angels, as in fact was done in the most ancient times; for, being a spirit clothed with a body, he is one with them. But because in process of time men so immersed themselves in corporeal and worldly things as to care almost nothing for aught besides, the way was closed. Yet as soon as the corporeal things recede in which man is immersed, the way is again opened, and he is among spirits, and in a common life with them.

※ 해의 열과 빛처럼 주님으로부터 나와 온 피조세계를 영원히 비추는 인플럭스(influx, 入流)라는 게 있습니다. 모든 피조물은 이 인플럭스로 주님과 연결되어 존재, 존속할 수 있는데, 사람도 주님을 향하면 그 내면이 열려 이 인플럭스를 받아들이게 되지만, 주님을 등지면 내면이 닫혀 이 인플럭스로부터 차단이 되기 때문입니다.
