모든 것의 근원이 신성이 아니라 자연이라고 여기고, 천국의 수많은 경이가 집결된 사람의 몸을 자연의 산물이라고 여기는 사람들이 있다는 말을 들으면 천사들은 매우 놀란다. 사람이 조금만 그 마음을 고양하면, 모든 것이 자연이 아니라 하나님께로부터 온다는 것을 알 수 있고, 자연계는 단지 영계의 옷이자 영계가 그 상응하는 형태로 질서의 외적인 최종단계(the outmost of order)에 드러난 것임을 알 수 있는데도, 사람의 지성(the rational part of man)이 자연에서 발생했다고 믿는 사람들이 있다는 사실에 천사들은 더욱 놀란다. 천사들은 그런 사람들을 어둠 속에서는 보지만 빛 속에서는 아무 것도 보지 못하는 올빼미에 비유한다. Angels are amazed when they hear that there are men who attribute all things to nature and nothing to the Divine, and who also believe that their body, into which so many wonders of heaven are gathered, is a product of nature. Still more are they amazed that the rational part of man is believed to be from nature, when, if men will but lift their minds a little, they can see that such effects are not from nature but from the Divine; and that nature has been created simply for clothing the spiritual and for presenting it in a correspondent form in the outmost of order. Such men they liken to owls, which see in darkness, but in light see nothing.
