한 공동체가 작은 천국이듯, 한 천사는 가장 작은 형태의 천국이다. 천국은 천사 안에 있기 때문이다. 천사의 마음 안에 있는 내면성들은 천국의 형태로 배치되어 있으며, 따라서 자기 외부에 있는 천국의 모든 것을 받을 수 있게 되어 있다. 또 그것을 받아들이는 것은, 주님으로부터 나와 천사 안에 들어 있는 선의 특성에 따른다. 이 선 때문에 천사는 천사가 되고, 천국이 된다. As an entire society is a heaven in a smaller form, so an angel is a heaven in the smallest form. For heaven is not outside of the angel, but is within him, since the interior things which belong to his mind are arranged into the form of heaven, thus for the reception of all things of heaven that are outside of him. These also he receives according to the quality of the good that is in him from the Lord. It is from this that an angel is a heaven.

각 공동체가 작은 형태의 천국임은 모든 공동체가 천국 전체와 똑같은 천국 모양으로 되어 있다는 사실로 확증할 수 있다. 천국 전체를 보면, 다른 천사보다 뛰어난 천사들이 그 중심에 있고, 가장자리로 갈수록 뛰어남이 덜한 천사들이 있다. 그래서 주님은 천국 전체를 한 명의 천사로 보시고 이끄신다. 각 공동체도 마찬가지다. 따로 천사 공동체 하나가 한 명의 천사로 나타나기도 하는데, 나도 이것을 주님의 허락하심으로 본 적이 있다. 나아가, 주께서 천사들 가운데 나타나실 때, 여럿에게 둘러싸인 한 분으로 보이지 않으시고, 그 전체의 모습이 하나가 되어 천사 한 명의 형상으로 보인다. 이런 이유로, 성경에서 ‘천사’가 주님을 뜻하고, 또 천국의 한 공동체를 지칭하기도 한다. ‘미가엘’, ‘가브리엘’, ‘라파엘’은 바로 그 기능에 따라 그렇게 이름지어진 천사 공동체를 말한다.주50 That each society is a heaven in a smaller form can be seen from this also, that each society there has a heavenly form like that of heaven as a whole. In the whole heavens those who are superior to the rest are in the middle, with the less excellent round about in a decreasing order even to the borders (as stated in a preceding chapter, n. 43). It can be seen also from this, that the Lord directs all in the whole heaven as if they were a single angel; and the same is true of all in each society; and as a consequence an entire angelic society sometimes appears in angelic form like a single angel, as I have been permitted by the Lord to see. Moreover, when the Lord appears in the midst of the angels he does not appear as one surrounded by many, but the appearance is as a one, in an angelic form. This is why the Lord is called “an angel” in the Word, and why an entire society is so called. “Michael,” “Gabriel,” and “Raphael” are no other than angelic societies so named from their function.50

주50. 말씀에서는 주님을 천사라고 한다. In the Word the Lord is called an angel (n. 6280, 6831, 8192, 9303). 하나의 천사 공동체 전체를 하나의 천사라 한다. 미가엘과 라파엘은 천사들의 공동체이며, 그들의 하는 일을 따라 그렇게 부르는 것이다. A whole angelic society is called an angel, and Michael and Raphael are angelic societies, so called from their functions (n. 8192). 천국 공동체들과 천사들은 무슨 이름이 없고, 다만 그들의 선의 퀄러티와 그 퀄러티에 대한 걸로 구별된다. The societies of heaven and the angels have no names, but are distinguished by the quality of their good, and by the idea of it (n. 1705, 1754).

각 공동체가 작은 형태의 천국이고, 각 천사가 가장 작은 형태의 천국인 까닭은, 사랑과 신앙의 선이 천국을 이루기 때문이며, 이 선이 모든 공동체와 거기 속한 천사들 안에 있기 때문이다. 공동체마다 선이 독특하고 다양하다는 사실은 전혀 문제가 되지 않는다. 서로 달라도 모두 천국적 선이다. 각 천국의 특성이 다를 뿐이다. 그래서 누가 천국의 어떤 공동체로 올려지면 천국에 들어갔다고 말하는 것이고, 거기 있는 천사들을 각자 자기 특유의 천국 안에 있다고 하는 것이다. 영계 사람들은 모두 이것을 알고 있기 때문에, 천국 밖이나 아래에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 천사의 무리를 보면, 천국이 여기 또는 저기에 있다고 말한다. 비유하자면, 총독, 관리, 하인들이 같은 궁전 안에 사는 것과 같다. 그들이 층마다 자기 처소나 방에 따로 있지만, 여전히 같은 궁전 안에 있으면서 왕을 받드는 임무를 각자 수행하는 것이다. 이를 보면, 성경에 나오는 주님 말씀을 이해할 수 있다. Each society is a heaven in a smaller form, and each angel in the smallest form, because it is the good of love and of faith that makes heaven, and this good is in each society of heaven and in each angel of a society. It does not matter that this good everywhere differs and varies, it is still the good of heaven; and there is no difference except that heaven has one quality here and another there. So when anyone is raised up into any society of heaven he is said to come into heaven; and those who are there are said to be in heaven, and each one in his own. This is known to all in the other life; consequently those standing outside of or beneath heaven, when they see at a distance companies of angels, say that heaven is in this or that place. It is comparatively like civil and military officers and attendants in a royal palace or castle, who, although dwelling apart in their own quarters or chambers above and below, are yet in the same palace or castle, each in his own position in the royal service. This makes evident the meaning of the Lord’s words, that:

내 아버지 집에 거할 곳이 많도다 (요14:2) In his Father’s house are many abiding places (John 14:2);

또한 예언서의 ‘천국의 거처’, ‘하늘의 하늘’의 의미도 알 수 있다. also what is meant by the dwelling places of heaven, and the heavens of heavens, in the prophets.
