천국에서 주님의 신성은 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이다

천국에서는 주께로부터 나오는 신성(神性, The Divine)을 신적 진리(Divine truth)라고 부른다. 그 이유는 다음과 같다. 신적 진리는 주님의 신적 사랑(Divine love)으로부터 나와서 천국으로 흘러든다. 신적 사랑과 거기서 나오는 신적 진리는 이 세상 해의 불과 거기서 나오는 빛과 같다. 사랑은 해의 불과 같고, 진리는 해의 빛과 같다. 상응 원리에 의해 불은 사랑을 의미하고, 빛은 사랑에서 나오는 진리를 의미한다. 따라서 이제 신적 사랑에서 나오는 선과 진리의 속성을 정의할 수 있다. 본질적으로 그것은 신적 진리에 결합된 신적 선(Divine good)이다. 그 결합으로 인해 천국 안의 모든 것에 생명을 주는데, 그것은 마치 이 세상 해의 열이 그 빛에 융합되어 지상 만물을 열매 맺게 하는 것과 같다. 그 빛에 열이 융합되지 않았을 경우에는 차가운 빛이 되어 만물이 쇠잔하는 것이다. 천사들에게 있어서, 열에 비유되는 신적 선은 사랑의 선(the good of love)이며, 빛에 비유되는 신적 진리를 통해서 사랑의 선이 나온다. The Divine that goes forth from the Lord is called in heaven Divine truth, for a reason that will presently appear. This Divine truth flows into heaven from the Lord from his Divine love. The Divine love and the Divine truth therefrom are related to each other as the fire of the sun and the light therefrom in the world, love resembling the fire of the sun and truth therefrom light from the sun. Moreover, by correspondence fire signifies love, and light truth going forth from love.19 From this it is clear what the Divine truth that goes forth from the Lord’s Divine love is—that in its essence it is Divine good joined to Divine truth, and being so conjoined it vivifies all things of heaven; just as in the world when the sun’s heat is joined to light it makes all things of the earth fruitful, which takes place in spring and summer. It is otherwise when the heat is not joined with the light, that is, when the light is cold; then all things become torpid and lie dead. With the angels this Divine good, which is compared to heat, is the good of love; and Divine truth, which is compared to light, is that through which and out of which good of love comes.

주#19 말씀에서 ‘불’은 천국적 사랑과 지옥적 사랑을 상징한다. In the Word “fire” signifies heavenly love and infernal love (n. 934, 4906, 5215). ‘거룩한 하늘의 불’은 신적 사랑과 그 사랑에 속한 모든 애정을 상징한다. “Holy and heavenly fire” signifies Divine love, and every affection that belongs to that love (n. 934, 6314, 6832). 불에서 나오는 ‘빛’은 사랑의 선에서 나오는 진리를 상징한다. 천국에 충만한 빛은 신적 진리를 상징한다. “Light” from fire signifies truth going forth from good of love; and light in heaven signifies Divine truth (n. 3195, 3485, 3636, 3643, 3993, 4302, 4413, 4415, 9548, 9684).

천국을 이루는 신성은 사랑이다. 사랑은 영적 결합력(spiritual conjunction)이기 때문이다. 사랑은 천사들을 주님께로 결합시키고, 천사들끼리 서로 결합하게 한다. 그렇게 결합되어 있으므로 주님 눈에는 모든 천사들이 하나로 보인다. 더욱이 사랑은 사람의 생명의 본질(the very being [esse] of everyone’s life)이다. 따라서 천사와 사람의 생명의 근원이기도 하다. 이 문제를 숙고해 보면, 사랑이 우리 가장 깊은 내면의 원동력(the inmost vitality of man)임을 알게 될 것이다. 사랑이 있을 때 사람은 따스해지고, 사랑이 없으면 차가워지며, 사랑이 완전히 박탈되면 죽는 것이다. 그러나 사람은 각자 사랑의 성질(the quality of his love)에 따라 생명의 성질(the quality of each one’s life)이 다르다. The Divine in heaven which makes heaven is love, because love is spiritual conjunction. It conjoins angels to the Lord and conjoins them to one another, so conjoining them that in the Lord’s sight they are all as one. Moreover, love is the very being [esse] of everyone’s life; consequently from love both angels and men have life. Everyone who reflects can know that the inmost vitality of man is from love, since he grows warm from the presence of love and cold from its absence, and when deprived of it he dies.20 But it is to be remembered that the quality of his love is what determines the quality of each one’s life.

천국에는 서로 구별되는 두 가지 사랑이 있다. 주님을 향한 사랑(love to the Lord)과 이웃을 향한 사랑(love toward the neighbor)이다. 주님 사랑은 삼층천, 즉 가장 내적인 천국의 특성이다. 이웃 사랑은 이층천, 즉 중간 천국의 특성이다. 둘 다 주님께로부터 나와 천국을 이루는 사랑이다. 천국에서는 이 두 사랑이 어떻게 다르며, 또 어떻게 서로 융합되는가를 밝히 알 수 있다. 이 세상에서는 어렴풋이 알 수 있을 뿐이다. 천국에서는 주님을 사랑한다는 것은 주님 개인을 사랑하는 것이 아니라 주님께로부터 오는 선을 사랑하는 것이다. 선을 사랑한다는 것은 선을 의도하고 사랑으로 선을 행하는 것이다. 마찬가지로, 이웃을 사랑한다는 것도 이웃을 개인적으로 사랑하는 것이 아니라 말씀에서 나오는 진리를 사랑하는 것이다. 진리를 사랑한다는 것은 진리를 추구하고 실천하는 것이다. 이로 보아 이 두 종류의 사랑은 선과 진리가 서로 구별되듯 구별되고, 선과 진리가 서로 융합하듯 융합되는 것을 알 수 있다. In heaven there are two distinct loves, love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor, in the inmost or third heaven love to the Lord, in the second or middle heaven love toward the neighbor. They both go forth from the Lord, and they both make heaven. How these two loves are distinct and how they are conjoined is seen in heaven in clear light, but in the world only obscurely. In heaven loving the Lord does not mean loving him in respect to his person, but it means loving the good that is from him; and to love good is to will and do good from love; and to love the neighbor does not mean loving a companion in respect to his person, but loving the truth that is from the Word; and to love truth is to will and do it. This makes clear that these two loves are distinct as good and truth are distinct, and that they are conjoined as good is conjoined with truth.21 But this can scarcely be comprehended by men unless it is known what love is, what good is, and what the neighbor is.22

To love the neighbor is not to love the person, but to love that in him from which he is what he is, that is, his truth and good. (n. 5028, 10336) 사람을 사랑하지, 그 사람 안에 있는 주님의 것을 사랑하지는 않는 사람들은 악과 선을 같이 사랑하는 것이다. Those who love the person, and not that in him from which he is what he is, love evil and good alike. (n. 3820) 체어리티(charity, 이웃 사랑, 자선, 기부, 인애)는 진리를 위하여 진리를 의도하고, 진리로 감동되어 진리에 대한 애정을 갖는 것이다. Charity is willing truths and being affected by truths for the sake of truths. (n. 3876, 3877) 이웃을 향한 체어리티는 모든 일과 모든 역할, 쓰임새 가운데 선, 정의 및 의로운 것을 행하는 것이다. Charity toward the neighbor is doing what is good, just, and right, in every work and in every function. (n. 8120–8122)

나는 여러 번, 천사들과 이 문제를 놓고 대화했다. 그들은 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이란 실로 선과 진리를 사랑하고, 의도적으로 행하는 것임을 기독교인들이 모르고 있다는 사실에 놀라움을 금치 못했다. 사랑을 나타내는 길은 상대가 원하는 바를 의도하고 행하는 것이라는 것, 그럼으로써 서로 사랑하게 되고, 상대와 결합되는 것을 교인들은 알아야 한다. 그러나 상대방을 사랑한다고 하면서 그가 원하는 것을 하지 않으면 그렇게 될 수 없다. 그것은 본질적으로 전혀 사랑하는 것이 아니다. 또 그들이 알아야 할 것은 주님께로부터 오는 선은 주님과 비슷한 모습이라는 점이다. 주님이 그 안에 계시기 때문이다. 그러므로 선과 진리를 의도하고 행함으로써 자기 삶이 되게 한 사람은 주님을 닮게 되며, 주님과 결합된다. 이 사실은 성경에서 주님이 가르치신 바 있다. I have repeatedly talked with angels about this matter. They were astonished, they said, that men of the church do not know that to love the Lord and to love the neighbor is to love what is good and true, and to do this from the will, when they ought to know that one evinces love by willing and doing what another wishes, and it is this that brings reciprocal love and conjunction, and not loving another without doing what he wishes, which in itself is not loving; also that men should know that the good that goes forth from the Lord is a likeness of him, since he is in it; and that those who make good and truth to belong to their life by willing them and doing them become likenesses of the Lord and are conjoined to him. Willing is loving to do. That this is so the Lord teaches in the Word, saying,

천사들에게 영향을 주고 천국을 만드는 것은 주의 신성이고, 주의 신성은 사랑이라는 것을 천국에서의 내 모든 경험이 증명한다. 천국의 모든 이들은 사랑과 자비의 형상이며, 그 얼굴과 말과 생명의 모든 세부에서까지 사랑과 형용할 수 없는 아름다움이 비쳐 나온다. 더욱이, 모든 천사와 영들에게는 각자에게서 분출되어 각자를 둘러싸고 있는 생명의 영적 영향권(spiritual spheres)이 있는데, 어떤 이들의 것은 상당히 멀리까지 확장된다. 그 영향권을 보면, 그의 사랑에서 생기는 애정이 어떤지 알 수 있다. 이 영향권은 각자의 애정과 그에 따른 사고의 생명에서, 즉 그의 사랑과 그에 따른 신앙의 생명에서 분출되기 때문이다. 천사들에게서 발산되는 영향권은 너무도 사랑으로 가득 차서 함께 있는 이들의 삶 가장 내적인 차원에까지 영향을 준다. 나도 자주 천사들의 영향권을 느끼고, 그렇게 감동받았다. 천사들이 사랑에서 생명을 얻는 것은 다음과 같은 사실로도 증명된다. 그 세계에서는 모든 사람이 각자의 사랑을 따라 몸을 돌린다. 주님과 이웃을 사랑하는 사람들은 끊임없이 주님을 향해 돌아서고, 자기를 사랑하는 사람들은 끊임없이 주님께 등을 돌린다. 그들이 매번 몸을 돌릴 때마다 그렇게 된다. 영계에서는 공간이 그들의 내면 상태와 일치하기 때문이며, 또 방위도 이 세상에서처럼 고정되어 있는 것이 아니고, 그들이 어느 쪽을 향하고 있느냐에 따라 달라지기 때문이다. 그러나 천사들 자신이 주님을 향해 돌아서는 것이 아니라, 주님께서 당신의 일을 행하는 것을 사랑하는 사람들을 당신께로 향하게 하시는 것이다. 더 자세한 것은 뒤에 영계의 방위를 다룬 장에서 설명하겠다. All experience in heaven attests that the Divine that goes forth from the Lord and that affects angels and makes heaven is love; for all who are in heaven are forms of love and charity, and appear in ineffable beauty, with love shining forth from their faces, and from their speech and from every particular of their life.23 Moreover, there are spiritual spheres of life emanating from and surrounding every angel and every spirit, by which their quality in respect to the affections of their love is known, sometimes at a great distance. For with everyone these spheres flow forth from the life of his affection and consequent thought, or from the life of his love and consequent faith. The spheres that go forth from angels are so full of love as to affect the inmosts of life of those who are with them. They have repeatedly been perceived by me and have thus affected me.24 That it is love from which angels have their life is further evident from the fact that in the other life everyone turns himself in accordance with his love—those who are in love to the Lord and in love toward the neighbor turning themselves always to the Lord, while those who are in love of self turn themselves always away from the Lord. This is so, however their bodies may turn, since with those in the other life spaces conform to the states of their interiors, likewise quarters, which are not constant as they are in this world, but are determined in accordance with the direction of their faces. And yet it is not the angels that turn themselves to the Lord; but the Lord turns to himself those that love to do the things that are from him.25 But more on this subject hereafter, where the quarters in the other life are treated of.

주#24 영적 구체(球體, sphere)는 생명의 구체인데, 모든 사랑, 영, 천사에게서 흘러넘치고 뿜어져 나와 그들 자신을 에워싼다. A spiritual sphere, which is a sphere of the life, overflows and pours forth from every man, spirit, and angel, and encompasses them (n. 4464, 5179, 7454, 8630). 이것은 그들의 애정과 그에 따른 사고의 생명에서 나온다. It flows from the life of their affection and consequent thought (n. 2489, 4464, 6206).

주#25 영들과 천사들은 끊임없이 자기들이 사랑하는 대상을 향해 돌아선다. 천국에 있는 사람들은 끊임없이 주님을 향해 돌아선다. Spirits and angels turn themselves constantly to their loves, and those in the heavens turn themselves constantly to the Lord (n. 10130, 10189, 10420, 10702). 저세상 방위는 자신의 얼굴 방향에 따라 제각각이며, 그렇게 정해진다. 이 세상 방위하고는 다르다. Quarters in the other life are to each one in accordance with the direction of his face, and are thereby determined, otherwise than in the world (n. 10130, 10189, 10420, 10702).

천국 안의 주님의 신성이 사랑인 이유는 평화, 지성, 지혜, 행복 등 천국의 모든 것을 받는 그릇이 바로 사랑이기 때문이다. 사랑은 사랑과 조화되는 것은 무엇이든 모두 받아들인다. 사랑은 그 모든 것을 갈망하고, 찾고, 자연스럽게 흡수한다. 그 모든 것에 의해 풍요롭고, 완벽하기를 끊임없이 원하기 때문이다. 이것은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 사랑은 기억 창고 속을 살펴 자기와 조화되는 것들만 꺼내서 자기 아래 정리해 모아둔다고 표현할 수 있다. 즉 그것들이 자기 것이 되도록 ‘안’에 두고, 사용하기 위해 ‘아래’ 두는 것이다. 그러나 자기와 조화되지 않는 것은 거부하고 내보낸다. The Divine of the Lord in heaven is love, for the reason that love is receptive of all things of heaven, such as peace, intelligence, wisdom and happiness. For love is receptive of each and all things that are in harmony with it; it longs for them, seeks them, and drinks them in as it were spontaneously, for it desires unceasingly to be enriched and perfected by them.26 This, too, man well knows, for with him love searches as it were the stores of his memory and draws forth all things that are in accord with itself, collecting and arranging them in and under itself—in itself that they may be its own, and under itself that they may be its servants; but other things not in accord with it, it discards and expels.

사랑에는 그 자체와 맞는 진리를 받아들이고, 갈망하고, 그 진리와 결합하는 모든 능력이 들어 있음은, 천국에 들어간 사람들의 경우로 충분히 확인할 수 있었다. 그들은 지상에 살 때는 단순한 사람들이었지만, 천사들과 합류하자 천사의 지혜와 천국의 축복을 누리는 것이었다. 그 이유는 그들이 선함과 진리를 사랑했고, 그것이 그들 생명에 심어졌기 때문에, 그로 인해 천국과 그 안의 이루 말할 수 없는 모든 것을 받을 수 있는 능력이 생긴 것이다. 그러나 자기와 세상을 사랑한 사람들은 이를 받을 능력이 없다. 그들은 천국의 모든 것에 등을 돌리며 거부하고, 천국의 흐름이 그들에게 닿자마자 뛰쳐나와 자기들과 같은 애정 안에 있는 지옥의 영들에 합류한다. That there is present in love every capacity for receiving truths in harmony with itself, and a longing to conjoin them to itself, has been made clear also by the fact that some who were simple-minded in the world were taken up into heaven, and yet when they were with the angels they came into angelic wisdom and heavenly blessedness, and for the reason that they had loved what is good and true for its own sake, and had implanted it in their life, and had thereby become capacities for receiving heaven with all that is ineffable there. But those who are in love of self and of the world have no capacity for receiving what is good and true; they loathe and reject it, and at its first touch and entrance they flee and associate themselves with those in hell who are in loves like their own.

천국의 사랑 속에 이러한 능력이 들어 있다는 사실을 믿기 어려워하고, 직접 알아보고 싶어 하는 영들이 있었다. 그래서 그들은 천국의 사랑의 상태 안에 잠시 머물러보도록 허락받았다. 천국 사랑에 저항하는 요소들을 일시 잠재운 다음, 그들을 천사들의 천국이 있는 곳으로 데려오자 그들은 말로 표현할 수 없는 내적인 행복을 느낀다고 말했다. 그리고 다시 그전 상태로 되돌아가야 하는 것을 무척 슬퍼했다. 또 천국에 올라간 다른 영들의 경우도 그들이 더 높이, 즉 더 내적으로 들어갈수록 총명과 지혜가 더해져서 전에 알 수 없었던 것들을 알 수 있었다. 이로 보아 사랑이 천국과 그 안의 모든 것을 받는 그릇임을 알 수 있다. 그 사람은 주님께로부터 나온다. There were spirits who had doubts about there being such capacities in heavenly love, and who wished to know whether it were true; whereupon they were let into a state of heavenly love, whatever opposed being for the time removed, and were brought forward some distance, where there was an angelic heaven, and from it they talked with me, saying that they perceived a more interior happiness than they could possibly express in words, and they lamented greatly that they must return into their former state. Others also were taken up into heaven; and the higher or more interiorly they were exalted the more of intelligence and wisdom were they admitted into, such as enabled them to perceive what had before been incomprehensible to them. From this it is clear that the love that goes forth from the Lord is receptive of heaven and all things therein.

주님을 향한 사랑과 이웃 사랑 안에 모든 신적 진리가 들어 있다는 것은 주님께서 친히 하신 이 말씀으로 확증된다. That love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor include in themselves all Divine truths is made evident by what the Lord himself said of these two loves:

37예수께서 이르시되 네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라 하셨으니 38이것이 크고 첫째 되는 계명이요 39둘째도 그와 같으니 네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라 하셨으니 40이 두 계명이 온 율법과 선지자의 강령이니라 (마22:37-40) Thou shalt love thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second, like unto it, is, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang the law and the prophets (Matt. 22:37–40).

‘율법과 선지자’(the law and the prophets)는 성경말씀 전체를, 따라서 모든 신적 진리를 의미한다. “The law and the prophets” are the whole Word, thus all Divine truth.
