라멕이 두 아내를 맞이하였으니 하나의 이름은 아다요 하나의 이름은 씰라였더라 And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. (창4:19)

405. 가인으로부터 여섯 번째 순서인 ‘라멕’은 황폐함을 상징합니다. 더 이상 어떤 신앙도 남아 있지 않게 된 결과입니다. By “Lamech,” who was the sixth in order from Cain, is signified vastation, in consequence of there being no longer any faith;

그의 ‘두 아내’는 일종의 새로운 교회의 도래를 상징하며, by his “two wives” is signified the rise of a new church;

‘아다’는 그 교회의 천적 영적인 것들의 어머니를 by “Adah,” the mother of its celestial and spiritual things;

그리고 ‘씰라’는 자연적인 것들의 어머니를 각각 상징합니다. and by “Zillah,” the mother of its natural things.

406. ‘라멕’은 황폐함, 혹은 신앙이 전혀 남아 있지 않음을 상징합니다. 이 사실은 이어지는 23절, 24절을 보면 분명한데요, 거기에서, ‘나의 상처로 말미암아 내가 사람을 죽였고 나의 상함으로 말미암아 소년을 죽였도다’ 말하고 있습니다. That by “Lamech” is signified vastation, or that there was no faith, is evident from the following verses (23–24), in which it is said that he “slew a man to his wounding, and a little one to his hurt”;

거기서 ‘사람’은 신앙을, ‘어린아이’ 혹은 ‘소년’은 이웃 사랑을 의미하기 때문입니다. for there, by a “man” is meant faith, and by a “little one” or “little child,” charity.

407. 보통 한 교회의 상태는 그래서 상황에 따라 달라집니다. The state of a church in general is thus circumstanced.

시간이 흐름에 따라, 교회는 참 신앙으로부터 멀어지다가 결국 신앙이라는 것이 완전히 사라지는 지경까지 이르게 되는데, 그때를 일컬어 ‘황폐해졌다’고 합니다. In process of time it departs from the true faith until at last it comes to be entirely destitute of faith, when it is said to be “vastated.”

이런 일이 태고 교회의 경우, 가인파(가인派, Cainites)라 하는 사람들 사이에서, 그리고 또한 홍수 후 고대 교회의 경우와, 뿐만 아니라, 유대 교회의 경우에도 있었습니다. This was the case with the most ancient church among those who were called Cainites, and also with the ancient church after the flood, as well as with the Jewish church.

주의 강림(降臨, the Lord’s advent)의 때에, 이런 종말이 다음과 같은 황폐한 상태 가운데 있었는데요, 그들은 자기들을 구원하러 오시기로 예정되어 있던 주님에 관하여 아무것도 몰랐으며, 그리고 실제로 그렇게 오셨음에도 불구하고 여전히 주님 신앙에 대해 아는 게 거의 없었습니다. At the time of the Lord’s advent this last was in such a state of vastation that they knew nothing about the Lord, that he was to come into the world for their salvation, and they knew still less about faith in him.

초대 기독교회, 혹은 주님 강림 후 존재했던 교회의 경우 또한 그랬습니다. 그리고 오늘날(※ 1750년대 즈음 유럽) 교회의 경우 역시 그 안에 아무런 신앙도 남아 있지 않을 정도로 그렇게 철저하게 황폐해진 상황입니다. Such was also the case with the primitive Christian church, or that which existed after the Lord’s advent, and which at this day is so completely vastated that there is no faith remaining in it.

그러나 교회의 극소수 핵들은 늘 남아 있는데, 이것은 신앙에 관해서 황폐해진 사람들은 인식하지 못하는 것입니다. Yet there always remains some nucleus of a church, which those who are vastated as to faith do not acknowledge;

태고 교회의 경우가 그랬는데, 태고 교회의 남은 자들은 홍수 때까지 있었고, 홍수 후에도 계속 있었습니다. and thus it was with the most ancient church, of which a remnant remained until the time of the flood, and continued after that event.

이들 태고 교회 내 남은 자들을 이름하여 ‘노아’라 하는 것입니다. This remnant of the church is called “Noah.”
