여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 그렇지 아니하다 가인을 죽이는 자는 벌을 칠 배나 받으리라 하시고 가인에게 표를 주사 그를 만나는 모든 사람에게서 죽임을 면하게 하시니라 And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should smite him. (창4:15)

392. ‘가인을 죽이는 자는 벌을 칠 배나 받으리라’는 말씀은 심지어 그렇게 분리된 신앙이라 할지라도 신앙에 대한 폭력은 신성모독이 될 수 있음을 상징합니다. By “vengeance being taken sevenfold on anyone who slays Cain” is signified that to do violence to faith even when thus separated would be a sacrilege;

‘가인에게 표를 주사 그를 만나는 모든 사람에게서 죽임을 면하게 하시니라’는 말씀은 주님은 신앙을 특별한 방식으로 구별하셔서 신앙이 보존될 수 있게 하셨음을 상징합니다. “Jehovah set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should smite him” signifies that the Lord distinguished faith in a particular manner, in order that it might be preserved.

393. 우리는 이 말씀들의 속뜻 설명을 계속하기에 앞서 먼저 어떻게 이 경우가 신앙과 연결되는지를 알 필요가 있습니다. Before we proceed to elucidate the internal sense of the words before us, it is necessary to know how the case is with faith.

태고교회는 사랑의 신앙 말고는 그 어떤 신앙도 모르는, 그래서 신앙을 입에 올리는 것조차 꺼리는 그런 교회였습니다. 그들은 신앙에 관한 모든 것을 주님의 사랑을 통한 퍼셉션으로 지각했습니다. The most ancient church was of such a character as to acknowledge no faith except that which is of love, insomuch that they were unwilling even to mention faith, for through love from the Lord they perceived all things that belong to faith.

우리가 앞에서 지금까지 말해 온 천적 천사들 또한 그렇습니다. Such also are the celestial angels of whom we have spoken above.

그러나 인류는 이런 캐릭터로 있을 수 없을 것이며, 앞으로 주님 사랑에서 신앙을 분리, 신앙을 따로 무슨 교리화하리라는 것이 예견되었기 때문에, 다음과 같은 대안이 제공되었는데요, 그것은 그들은 실제로 분리될 것이며, 그 후 인류는 신앙을 통해, 즉, 신앙에 관한 지식을 통해 주님으로부터 이웃 사랑을 받을 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 그래서 이를 위해 먼저 지식 [cognitio]이나 들음이 오고, 이걸 통해서 그 다음은 이웃 사랑, 즉, 이웃을 향한 사랑과, 자비가 주님에 의해 주어질 수 있도록 하셨습니다. 이때 이 이웃 사랑은 신앙과 분리될 수 없을뿐더러 오히려 신앙의 원칙을 형성합니다. But as it was foreseen that the human race could not be of this character, but would separate faith from love to the Lord, and would make of faith a doctrine by itself, it was provided that they should indeed be separated, but in such a way that through faith, that is, through the knowledges of faith, men might receive from the Lord charity, so that knowledge [cognitio] or hearing should come first, and then through knowledge or hearing, charity, that is, love toward the neighbor, and mercy, might be given by the Lord, which charity should not only be inseparable from faith, but should also constitute the principal of faith.

이제 그들이 전에 태고교회 때 가졌던 퍼셉션 대신, 그 자리를 양심이 계승하게 되었습니다. 이 양심은 이웃 사랑과 결합한 신앙을 통해 습득하는 것이며, 이 양심은 무엇이 참인지를 퍼셉션으로 아는 게 아니라 그것이 참이라 하니 참인 줄 아는 것입니다. 이것은 말씀에서 주님이 그렇게 말씀하셨기 때문에 그런 줄 아는 것입니다. And then instead of the perception they had in the most ancient church, there succeeded conscience, acquired through faith joined to charity, which dictated not what is true, but that it is true, and this because the Lord has so said in the Word.

홍수 후 교회들은 상당 부분 이런 특성들이었으며, 주의 강림 후 첫 교회들, 초대 교회들 역시 그랬습니다. 그리고 이런 이유로 영적 천사들과 천적 천사들이 서로 구분이 됩니다. The churches after the flood were for the most part of this character, as also was the primitive or first church after the Lord’s advent, and by this the spiritual angels are distinguished from the celestial.
