주님의 천적 나라에 있는 천사들은 주님의 신성을 보다 내적으로 받기 때문에, 영적 나라의 천사들보다 지혜와 영광에 있어 훨씬 뛰어나다. 그들이 주님을 사랑하므로 더욱 주님과 가깝고 친밀하게 결합되기 때문이다.주32 그것은 이들이 신적 진리를 계속 그들의 생활 속에 직접, 즉시(at once) 받아들이기 때문에 가능하다. 이와 대조적으로 영적 천사들은 신적 진리를 먼저 그들의 기억과 사고 속으로 받아들인다. 그러므로 천적 천사들은 신적 진리가 그들의 마음에 새겨져 있어 진리를 직관하며(perceive), 진리를 마치 자기 안에 들어있는 것처럼 본다. 그들은 진리가 옳은지 그른지 추론하지(reason about) 않는다.주33 예레미야서에 다음과 같이 기록된 것이 바로 이들에 대한 말씀이다. The angels in the Lord’s celestial kingdom, from their more interior reception of the Divine of the Lord, far excel in wisdom and glory the angels that are in his spiritual kingdom; for they are in love to the Lord, and consequently are nearer and more closely conjoined to him.32 These angels are such because they have received and continue to receive Divine truths at once in their life, and not first in memory and thought, as the spiritual angels do. Consequently they have Divine truths written in their hearts, and they perceive them, and as it were see them in themselves; nor do they ever reason about them whether they are true or not.33 They are such as are described in Jeremiah:

They shall teach no more everyone his friend and everyone his brother, saying, Know ye Jehovah. They shall know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest of them (Jer. 31:33, 34).

또 이사야서에는 And they are called in Isaiah:

네 모든 자녀는 여호와의 교훈을 받을 것이니 네 자녀에게는 큰 평안이 있을 것이며 (사54:13) Taught of Jehovah (Isa. 54:13).

그들이 ‘여호와의 교훈을 받을 것이라’고 하였다. ‘여호와의 교훈을 받는 것’(the taught of Jehovah)은 주님이 가르치시는 것을 말한다. 이것은 요한복음 6장 45, 46절에 주께서 직접 말씀하셨다. That the “taught of Jehovah” are those who are taught by the Lord he himself teaches in John 6:45, 46.

천적 나라는 주의 성직(聖職)의 나라(the Lord’s priestly kingdom)라고도 불린다. 성경 말씀에서는 ‘주의 처소’(his dwelling place)라고 한다. 영적 나라는 주의 왕권(王權)의 나라(his royal kingdom)라고도 하며, 성경에 ‘주의 보좌’(his throne)라고 표현되어 있다. 또 이 세상에 계실 때의 주님을 신성의 천적 측면(the celestial Divine the Lord)에서 ‘예수’라 했고, 신성의 영적 측면으로는 ‘그리스도’라고 칭했다. The celestial kingdom is called also the Lord’s priestly kingdom, and in the Word “his dwelling place”; while the spiritual kingdom is called his royal kingdom, and in the Word “his throne.” And from the celestial Divine the Lord in the world was called “Jesus,” while from the spiritual Divine he was called “Christ.”

천적 나라에 있는 사람들의 사랑인 천적 사랑은 주님을 향한 사랑(love to the Lord)이다. 영적 나라에 있는 사람들의 사랑은 영적 사랑이라 부르며, 이는 이웃 사랑(love toward the neighbor)이다. 또 사람이 사랑하는 것은 그에게 선(좋은 것)이기 때문에, 모든 선은 사랑에 속한다. 따라서 그 두 나라의 선도 하나는 천적 선, 다른 하나는 영적 선이라 한다. 이로 보아 주님을 향한 사랑이 이웃 사랑과 구분되는 것처럼, 그 두 나라가 서로 구분되는 것을 확실히 알 수 있다.주31 주님을 향한 사랑에서 나온 선은 보다 내적인 선이고, 그 사랑도 보다 내적인 사랑이기 때문에, 천적 천사들은 더 내적인 천사들이고, 더 높은 천사들이라 부르는 것이다. The love in which those are who are in the celestial kingdom is called celestial love, and the love in which those are who are in the spiritual kingdom is called spiritual love. Celestial love is love to the Lord, and spiritual love is love toward the neighbor. And as all good pertains to love (for good to anyone is what he loves) the good also of the one kingdom is called celestial, and the good of the other spiritual. Evidently, then, the two kingdoms are distinguished from each other in the same way as good of love to the Lord is distinguished from good of love toward the neighbor.31 And as the good of love to the Lord is an interior good, and that love is interior love, so the celestial angels are interior angels, and are called higher angels.

천적 나라를 이루는 천사들은 그들이 주님의 신성을 보다 깊이 받아들이기 때문에, 더 내적인 천사, 또는 더 높은 천사라고 부른다. 따라서 그들이 구성하고 있는 천국도 더 내적이고, 더 높은 천국이라고 한다.주29 더 높다, 더 낮다고 말하는 이유는, 내적인 것과 외적인 것을 그렇게 표현하기 때문이다.주30 As the angels that constitute the celestial kingdom receive the Divine of the Lord more interiorly they are called interior and also higher angels; and for the same reason the heavens that they constitute are called interior and higher heavens.29 They are called higher and lower, because these terms designate what is interior and what is exterior.30

주님으로부터 나오는 신성(神性, the Divine)을 더 내적으로(內的, more interiorly) 받는 천사들이 있고, 덜 내적으로 받는 천사들이 있다. 더 내적으로 받는 천사들은 천적 천사들(天的, celestial angels)이라 하고, 덜 내적으로 받는 천사들을 영적 천사들이라 한다. 이에 따라 천국이 두 나라로 구분되는 것이다. 하나는 천적 나라(the celestial kingdom), 다른 하나는 영적 나라라 한다.주28 There are angels that receive more interiorly the Divine that goes forth from the Lord, and others that receive it less interiorly; the former are called celestial angels, and the latter spiritual angels. Because of this difference heaven is divided into two kingdoms, one called the celestial kingdom, the other the spiritual kingdom.28

주28. 천국은 전체적으로 두 나라, 곧 천적 나라와 영적 나라로 나누어진다. Heaven as a whole is divided into two kingdoms, a celestial kingdom and a spiritual kingdom (n. 3887, 4138). 천적 나라 천사들은 주님의 신성을 마음으로 원하는 파트(voluntary part), 곧 의지(will) 안으로 받는다. 그래서 영적 천사들, 곧, 주님의 신성을 지적 파트(intellectual part), 곧 이해(understand) 안으로 받는 천사들보다 훨씬 더 내적이다. The angels of the celestial kingdom receive the Divine of the Lord in their voluntary part, thus more interiorly than the spiritual angels, who receive it in their intellectual part (n. 5113, 6367, 8521, 9936, 9995, 10124).

천국에는 무한한 다양성이 있다. 완전히 동일한 사회는 하나도 없고, 심지어 단 한 천사도 다른 이와 똑같지 않다.주27 그러므로 천국에는 일반적, 종류별, 그리고 세부적 구분이 있다. 일반적으로는 두 나라로 구분된다. 종류별로는 세 천국으로 되어 있다. 그리고 세부적으로는 무수한 사회공동체(innumerable societies)로 나누어진다. 이제 그것을 자세히 설명하겠다. 두 나라라고 부르는 이유는, 천국을 ‘하나님의 나라’(the kingdom of God)라고 하기 때문이다. As there are infinite varieties in heaven, and no one society nor any one angel is exactly like any other,27 there are in heaven general, specific, and particular divisions. The general division is into two kingdoms, the specific into three heavens, and the particular into innumerable societies. Each of these will be treated of in what follows. The general division is said to be into kingdoms, because heaven is called “the kingdom of God.”

All societies in the heavens, and all angels in a society, are thereby distinguished from each other (n. 690, 3241, 3519, 3804, 3986, 4067, 4149, 4263, 7236, 7833, 7836). 그럼에도 불구하고, 그들은 모두 주님에게서 오는 사랑으로 하나가 된다. Nevertheless they are all made one by love from the Lord (n. 457, 3986).

제 7 장

리보 도르또의 움막 (1)

프란치스코는 거룩한 인내가 악마의 음모를 뒤집는 일, 거룩하고 참된 단순이 세상 지혜와 육신의 지혜를 쳐부수고, 거룩한 종순이 육을 영에게 순종케 하고, 사람들로 이웃에 순종케 하는 것을 보여주었다. 그리고 "참 그리스도인에게는 단순히 인간만 아니라 짐승까지도 순종한다. 이같이 하여 사나운 짐승도 그와 함께 하나님께서 원하시는 바를 모조리 따라 행할 수 있다."라고 말했다.

이같은 모든 덕 중에서도 청빈은 특히 프란치스칸의 영성에 독특한 신선미를 부여하는 참된 기초를 형성했다. 자발적인 가난한 자는 열심, 사랑, 기타 모든 덕을 근거로 삼고, 깨달음이나 수덕으로 말미암아 비로소 존재가 가능하게 된다.

어느날 밤 형제들이 모두 잠들어 주위가 고요해졌을 때, 누구의 입에선가 몹시 신음하는 소리가 들려왔다. "아이구, 죽을 것 같구나! 죽을 것만 같다!" 그것은 형제 하나가 너무 극기를 하여 기아로 죽을 지경이 되어서 지른 소리였다. 프란치스코는 곧 일어나서 외쳤다. "형제들, 일어나시오. 불을 켜 주시오." 그리고 죽을 것 같다는 이가 누구냐고 물었다. "저입니다!" "도대체 무엇 때문에 죽을 것 같단 말이오?" "배가 고파서!" 프란치스코는 곁에 있는 이에게, 남겨 두었던 식물을 가져오게 하여 죽어가는 형제를 먹이며, 그의 용기를 환기시키기 위해 자기도 함께 먹었다. 그가 혼자 식사하는 것을 부끄럽게 여기지 않게 하려고 형제들 모두가 함께 회식케 했다. 그러면서 모두에게 훈계하기를 비록 회개의 생활이 선일지라도 너무 무모하면 안 되고 사려깊게 해야 할 필요를 설명했다.

어느날 형제 실베스트로 신부가 몸이 쇠약하여 혼자 고생하고 있었는데, 다른 형제들은 제각기 고행에 정진하고 있어서 아무도 그것을 모르고 있었다. 그러나 프란치스코는 어느새 그것을 눈치채고, "공복에는 포도를 먹는 것이 제일 좋을 것이다."고 혼잣말을 하더니 다음날 아침, 날이 새기 전에 일어나 실베스트로를 깨워 일으켰다. 아직 다른 형제들은 자고 있는데, 두 사람은 가까운 포도밭에 가서 잘 익은 포도송이 하나를 따서 제자의 손에 쥐어 주고, 자기도 먹기 시작했다. 이 일은 간단한 행위에 지나지 않았지만, 후에 이 형제는 그때 일을 회상할 때면, 새삼 감동하리만치 그의 마음은 스승에게 매여져 있었다.

...

한번은 형제 레오가 먼길을 가는 도중에 병이 들었다. 바로 길 곁에 포도나무가 있었기 때문에, 프란치스코는 무턱대고 들어가 포도송이 몇 개를 따다 먹였다. 덕택에 이 제자는 즉시 원기를 회복할 수 있었다. 그러나 포도밭 주인이 이것을 알고는 울타리 뒤에서 나타나 프란치스코를 몽둥이로 때렸다. 성인은 늘 하던 대로 하나님께 감사했다. 그러나 이 여행 중 그는 때때로 형제들을 뒤돌아보며, 다음과 같은 즉흥 노래를 반복해 부르면서 웃겼다.

형제 레오는 배부르게 먹었으나 덕택으로

형제 프란치스코는 실컷 얻어 맞았도다

형제 레오는 맛있는 것을 먹었으나

형제 프란치스코는 그 때문에 모진 매만 겪었도다

※ 주님을 향한 사랑과 이웃 사랑 안에 모든 신적 진리가 들어 있다는 것은 주님께서 친히 하신 이 말씀으로 확증된다.

주님을 향한 사랑과 이웃 사랑 안에 모든 신적 진리가 들어 있다는 것은 주님께서 친히 하신 이 말씀으로 확증된다. That love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor include in themselves all Divine truths is made evident by what the Lord himself said of these two loves:

37예수께서 이르시되 네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라 하셨으니 38이것이 크고 첫째 되는 계명이요 39둘째도 그와 같으니 네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라 하셨으니 40이 두 계명이 온 율법과 선지자의 강령이니라 (마22:37-40) Thou shalt love thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second, like unto it, is, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang the law and the prophets (Matt. 22:37–40).

‘율법과 선지자’(the law and the prophets)는 성경말씀 전체를, 따라서 모든 신적 진리를 의미한다. “The law and the prophets” are the whole Word, thus all Divine truth.

※ 천국 안의 주님의 신성이 사랑인 이유는 평화, 지성, 지혜, 행복 등 천국의 모든 것을 받는 그릇이 바로 사랑이기 때문이다.

천국 안의 주님의 신성이 사랑인 이유는 평화, 지성, 지혜, 행복 등 천국의 모든 것을 받는 그릇이 바로 사랑이기 때문이다. 사랑은 사랑과 조화되는 것은 무엇이든 모두 받아들인다. 사랑은 그 모든 것을 갈망하고, 찾고, 자연스럽게 흡수한다. 그 모든 것에 의해 풍요롭고, 완벽하기를 끊임없이 원하기 때문이다.주26 이것은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 사랑은 기억 창고 속을 살펴 자기와 조화되는 것들만 꺼내서 자기 아래 정리해 모아둔다고 표현할 수 있다. 즉 그것들이 자기 것이 되도록 ‘안’에 두고, 사용하기 위해 ‘아래’ 두는 것이다. 그러나 자기와 조화되지 않는 것은 거부하고 내보낸다. The Divine of the Lord in heaven is love, for the reason that love is receptive of all things of heaven, such as peace, intelligence, wisdom and happiness. For love is receptive of each and all things that are in harmony with it; it longs for them, seeks them, and drinks them in as it were spontaneously, for it desires unceasingly to be enriched and perfected by them.26 This, too, man well knows, for with him love searches as it were the stores of his memory and draws forth all things that are in accord with itself, collecting and arranging them in and under itself—in itself that they may be its own, and under itself that they may be its servants; but other things not in accord with it, it discards and expels.

사랑에는 그 자체와 맞는 진리를 받아들이고, 갈망하고, 그 진리와 결합하는 모든 능력이 들어 있음은, 천국에 들어간 사람들의 경우로 충분히 확인할 수 있었다. 그들은 지상에 살 때는 단순한 사람들이었지만, 천사들과 합류하자 천사의 지혜와 천국의 축복을 누리는 것이었다. 그 이유는 그들이 선함과 진리를 사랑했고, 그것이 그들 생명에 심어졌기 때문에, 그로 인해 천국과 그 안의 이루 말할 수 없는 모든 것을 받을 수 있는 능력이 생긴 것이다. 그러나 자기와 세상을 사랑한 사람들은 이를 받을 능력이 없다. 그들은 천국의 모든 것에 등을 돌리며 거부하고, 천국의 흐름이 그들에게 닿자마자 뛰쳐나와 자기들과 같은 애정 안에 있는 지옥의 영들에 합류한다. That there is present in love every capacity for receiving truths in harmony with itself, and a longing to conjoin them to itself, has been made clear also by the fact that some who were simple-minded in the world were taken up into heaven, and yet when they were with the angels they came into angelic wisdom and heavenly blessedness, and for the reason that they had loved what is good and true for its own sake, and had implanted it in their life, and had thereby become capacities for receiving heaven with all that is ineffable there. But those who are in love of self and of the world have no capacity for receiving what is good and true; they loathe and reject it, and at its first touch and entrance they flee and associate themselves with those in hell who are in loves like their own.

천국의 사랑 속에 이러한 능력이 들어 있다는 사실을 믿기 어려워하고, 직접 알아보고 싶어 하는 영들이 있었다. 그래서 그들은 천국의 사랑의 상태 안에 잠시 머물러보도록 허락받았다. 천국 사랑에 저항하는 요소들을 일시 잠재운 다음, 그들을 천사들의 천국이 있는 곳으로 데려오자 그들은 말로 표현할 수 없는 내적인 행복을 느낀다고 말했다. 그리고 다시 그전 상태로 되돌아가야 하는 것을 무척 슬퍼했다. 또 천국에 올라간 다른 영들의 경우도 그들이 더 높이, 즉 더 내적으로 들어갈수록 총명과 지혜가 더해져서 전에 알 수 없었던 것들을 알 수 있었다. 이로 보아 사랑이 천국과 그 안의 모든 것을 받는 그릇임을 알 수 있다. 그 사랑은 주님께로부터 나온다. There were spirits who had doubts about there being such capacities in heavenly love, and who wished to know whether it were true; whereupon they were let into a state of heavenly love, whatever opposed being for the time removed, and were brought forward some distance, where there was an angelic heaven, and from it they talked with me, saying that they perceived a more interior happiness than they could possibly express in words, and they lamented greatly that they must return into their former state. Others also were taken up into heaven; and the higher or more interiorly they were exalted the more of intelligence and wisdom were they admitted into, such as enabled them to perceive what had before been incomprehensible to them. From this it is clear that the love that goes forth from the Lord is receptive of heaven and all things therein.
